My teacher used to complain 20 times about my karate in one hour, but after watching and learning from your videos, sensei complimented 21 times in an hour. Thank you 🙌.

I have always practiced that bunkai differently. Think about carrying luggage and being attacked from the front. The leg is raised straight up as a block to make distance from the attacker. The turn can be an attack with the luggage and then stomping the foot or knee. The luggage would need to be dropped before or after the foot attack to perform the back fist strike unless what was being carried was small enough to strike with. Great Video. Thanks for sharing.

Hi Karin, I previously got my Orange belt with the aid of your Heian Nidan video, and now I've achieved my Yellow belt with this Heian Sandan tutorial. Great stuff I'm very thankful to you.

My compliments. I am returning to Shotokan karate after not training for 15 years. The precise detail of each stance and move is really well done. I have forgotten which stance is done where, front stance, back stance, kibi dachi. All very very well documented here. Excellent presentation. Superior to other Heian Kata videos I have seen. The illustration of the applications of each move of the kata is terrific. Being a black belt in a former life, I don't want to embarrass myself completely upon returning to the dojo. this is very helpful.

If you haven't heard of them already I would recommend Jesse Enkamp (karatebyjesse), Iai Abernethy (practicalkatabunkai), David Gimberline (kata for self defense), Didier Lupo (karatascosaintemarg), Andy Allen (Applied Shotokan by Andy Allen), John Burke, David Hogsette, Noah Legel (Karate Obsession), Ryan Parker (thecontemplative2), Angel Lemus (oneminutebunkai), Functional Karate & Kobudo, Bunkai Bastards and Karate Culture to name a few. They're part of the "new" crop of karateka (various styles) who look at kata bunkai from a more practical and realistic view. They not only demonstrate the applications, but they explain in detail.

Thanks for your videos! I think they are specially instructive. Tomorrow I will go to the doujou after 4 years, so tonight I am watching your videos. Last time I trained I had not children, now I have two half japanese boys. I hope they will enjoy karate in the near future (the older is now 3 years old). They may learn from your videos too! :)

You forgot the tate shuuto after the third fumigomi geri kiba dachi, empi uke, and jodan uraken uchi. That comes before the last oizuki (lunge punch).

The double blocks at the start of the kata do not represent blocking two opponents at once. It is just not realistic. You can never guess what the attack of your attacker is. It's more likely to be an arm manipulation in order to control the arm and to have it pinned. So going with that thought, you have only one opponent. The turning motion after nukite strike is a defense against an armbar attempt by an attacker in its most basic interpretation. If your attacker simply grabbed your wrist and did not twist it to harm you, I think he just wants to hold your hand because he likes you. Kidding aside, a mugger won't simply hold your hand if he wants to hurt you. He will bearhug you, he will pin you to the wall so you can't move. No offense Sensei but the breakdown of kata techniques here is not practical and it's safe to say it will be harmful to any karateka who will learn it.
