I am the son of Berlin Jews who came to Canada in 1939 and who were deprived of their German citizenship in 1942 by a decree of German Law. Post-war German law has offered to people in my position the possibility of applying to reacquire German citizenship, which I have done. I received it last year. When I listen to Karin Schmidt sing this song, the hairs on my neck stand up: German women, German melody, German wine and German song. With the possible exception of the third of the aforementioned, what could be better than that! Preventing the singing of this anthem is intended to prevent a return of the Nazi past I suppose, but the suppression of this beautiful song suppresses the natural emotion and pride that Germans should take in their culture and in their past, of which the twelve year period between 1933 and 45 is an anomaly. It must of course not happen again but when you suppress emotions and pride that are natural in a people you are most likely to bring about that which you fear most. Let us hear Das Leid der Deutschen sung again in Germany. Tom Vinci

Auch wenn das Deutschlandlied in all seinen Strophen etwas ganz Besonderes ist, so treffen die geographischen Angaben der Ersten nicht mehr zu und so klängen sie immer etwas komisch, immerhin liegt die Memel heute über 600km, die Etsch ca. 100 km von den Grenzen der Bundesrepbulik entfernt.

Unser guter alter Hoffmann meinte mit diesen geografischen Angaben nicht die Grenzen eines wie auch immer gearteten deutschen Staates. Er beschrieb damit die Sprachgrenzen der deutschen Sprachgrenzen. (Das alte HRR war teilweise wesentlich umfangreicher, die diversen Kleinstaaten wesentlich kleiner.) Diese stellten in den Augen Vieler die Grenzen Deutschlands dar. (vgl. den schönen alten Cantus "wo ist des Deutschen Vaterland".
