I worked with Karl for over two years, he was an incredibly talented, kind and funny man who loved to provoke people. He also made no difference between a humble cleaner and a president. He was very generous to me always sending huge bouquets of flowers from the most expensive stores. He was a week older than my mother also born in September 1933.

I don’t know how you can think he was talented? He completely ruined the Chanel look. Mademoiselle would’ve been turning in her grave. His take on Chanel was tacky. It was all over the place. People like to worship and idolise rich successful people without thinking critically about what they actually do. Karl had a very Germanic style which to me did not work with the Chanel style. So many of the collections he produced were silly or strange, really really bad to anyone who understands style and fashion history - completely the opposite to the timeless Chanel aesthetic. His fashion shows were just over the top pretentious and spawned a whole generation of vacuous superficial followers of clueless rich Asians or Arab princesses with really bad taste who are the only ones who wear Chanel anymore. No one with taste wears Chanel. No one with taste or class would be seen dead with all that branded logo splashed all over their bags and clothes. Only classless Asians who are obsessed with looking rich would wear logos like walking billboards. Yuck!

@@lapislazuli7876 Well unless you had worked with Karl, and you obviously did not, you could not judge his talent. The Chanel label was crashing when Karl took over as no one wanted what Chanel was offering, it was boring tweed and no longer fashionable. If Karl had not taken over the label it wouldn't exist today. Another thing which people do not realise in fashion is that the shows always include the 'silly and over the top' as it attracts attention and is therefor good for publicity. All the collections I worked on had up to 70% of fashion that never saw a store but were lent out to stars or photoshoots. As for his Germanic style, you should talk about his 'Germanic rigour' as doing 40+ collections a year takes a lot of stamina and strength. did he always get it right ? Of course not. As for saying that only classless people wear Chanel, I cannot dissagree, same goes for Vuitton BUT the Chanel label gives work to thousands of people and has revived many artisan based small productions that would have dissapeared otherwise. The weavers, the trimming makers, the button makers, the pleaters, the packaging makers, the accessory makers, the embroiderers etc etc. That's not counting the workrooms and drapers and tailors and then the sales staff, the accountants, the delivery people, even the cleaning staff. 'Fashion' as a profession encompasses a great many professions and gives work to a great many people and that is something. Does it feed into the bling and the greed and the tasteless need for the 'next thing', OF COURSE it does but that goes for most things today, the latest phone, the latest car, the best place to live, even the most fashionable dogs! Fashion is France for example outranks all other industries, even your supermarket t-shirt was declined from something higher up, that's how it works.

The animosity between Karl Lagerfeld and Yves Saint Laurent was simply that Yves came first and Karl second. In time, Yves was referred to as the Sun King, and Karl was simply called Crazy Karl for his work for many fashion houses. Karl’s work was popular for other house styles but not for his own label, which struggled. The true reason for the feud began when Yves was appointed to take over Dior in the 1950s, whereas Karl did not manage to do so until much later. Furthermore, Jacques de Bascher had a long affair with Yves and remained a good friend up until his death. Yves enjoyed all that Paris could offer in the 1960s and 1970s, being at the center, while Karl was on the outside, incapable of enjoying all that was on offer. In essence, he was on the outside, trying to belong but never quite making it from pretending to belong to the aristocracy to being an intellectual. Just look at the many occasions he completely changed his look. Once exposed a fraud over his low middle-class background, he became a modernist and sold his old belongings. Everyone in Paris knew the diet was a joke, as he had gastric surgery and further operations to remove all the excess skin. The high collars were to hide his very wrinkled neck, and the glover was to hide his arthritic fingers. The narrator mentioned Karl’s comments about weight; what he and others fail to understand is that the buyers of Ready to Wear don’t want to see overweight models, and in Haute Couture, they do not want it either. It is hard to imagine yourself in an outfit if the person is twice your size, as it would look completely different and, in some cases, look ridiculous.

Karl knew that once the fur was farmed and treated it was there to be used. The trouble with fur is that the farms producing it should not exist but they are powerful and well connected and make some people VERY rich. It's like plastic when the consumer is guilted and punished when the factories and importers are not even bothered. Having worked in fashion and textiles I know that some fake furs are almost identical to the real thing, it's a question of perception. I saw a video that I cannot unsee of crocodile farms and it was horrendous. The animals are confined to tiny pools and then pulled out and have steel rods thrust down their spines behind the skin when they are ALIVE, then they just bleed to death in horrendous pain and suffering so that some top label can make super overpriced handbag. There is much wrong with the industry but no consumer is going to fix it unless everyone does.

I will be 75 in a month and have seen more positive change than I ever imagined possible. Unfortunately I have also seen more that needs changing. I feel for you about not being able to unsee the video. I allowed myself, in fact forced myself, to see unimaginable cruelty and suffering when first becoming aware of cruelty to animals. Finally i realized how it was tearing me up inside. I never look anymore. When I start to think of it I stop. I chose now to use my limited energy and time very carefully. @@nansealove9000 Two weeks ago I buried my mother and brother in the same grave as my little murdered sister a few feet from dad. As a teen I was myself abused and left on a trash heap only to be again drugged kidnapped and abused and beaten two years later . I manaaged to survive all that because I still hadn't seen what man does to animals. In 2006 I moved to Brazil where my partner dumpted me and I lost all my money. My previous partner had been abusive and I lost my house at that time. After Brazil I found myself in China and I discovered their treatment of animals expecially dogs. On my arrival back in France with ten euros I climbed back up the ladder after a period of no home. I then discovered via the net, the dog farms, the pet theft, the fur trade, the poaching, it became a thing I could find a dark enough corner to hide from. I truly dislike this world, I think that humans are so low on the moral scale that they don't deserve to survive and am happy to see that they seem to be doing everything to go extinct. I do find moments of clarity of light of some form of joy when I hold close to me my two little rescue dogs. I live alone, childnless, I am retired, I don't really do 'friends', I did try but my idea of what it entails doesn't match other people's. I am likeable and clever and used to be beautiful I am told, it means nothing to me, just words. I have an inner world that I have constructed over the years where I can escape to on closing my eyes. A small town on the sea with long sandy beaches where dogs run in the sun and people actually read books. There is no technology there, just the sea, good food and culture. No one can take that away from me. My purpose now that I have no obligation to survive my mother is to breath, to live one day at a time. I don't take the defence of anyone or anything, I haven't that desire or energy. One breath, one heartbeat at a time. God bless.
