For me too. No. 5 of the Op. 6 set definitely has a special status, well worthy to stand alongside the Water Music and Royal Fireworks Music, definitely not to be buried amongst dozens upon dozens of superficially similar concertos.

Gerard, I would suggest that you listen to Karajan's No. 5, in which it is given the full stature that it deserves, especially if have a particular affection for this particular piece as I do.

I'm very happy that at least here, the number of movements delineated is correctly given as five rather than six as so often appears.A decent performance, but certain portions are taken much too fast for my taste; the main allegro of the first movement for one, and also the Largo movement, hardly to be described as "Largo" in this presentation. In fact, overall, a very slightly slower tempo would work somewhat better. And a bit more of a broadening as the ends of the various movements are approached would not be amiss either.

All a matter of taste and how one receives a piece of music, which is entirely personal. For me this particular concerto grosso stands out from the rest of the group, das a certain stature that places it right alongside the Water Music and especially the Royal Fireworks Music. As a result, a large aggregate performing this work is for me perfectly satisfactory. And by the way, this is not an arrangement, but rather simply the use of larger forces. For me, nothing wrong with that. It works for me here, but it might not in another work.
