I've been playing pool (not in a seriously competitive way, but for fun) for years and know about draw shots, but never saw an explanation of this drag shot before. This is excellent! Thank you! I am going to start practicing this and using it in situations where I need to hold the cue in an area after hitting the object ball. I'm accustomed to doing what you first described, which is slow rolling the cue into the object ball, but that is sketchy for the same reasons you described; especially on bar tables where slow roll can cause the object ball to drift away from the pocket. Thanks for this alternative.

Great tip--as an amateur (602 Fargo) I always thought shots like that were "slips" where I didn't commit to draw with either a weak stroke or poor followthrough. Your example of shooting the 1 prior to the 2 is a shot I would've used inside spin to hold the ball--another variable that can cause the miss of an otherwise easy shot. Look forward to finally doing this with purpose--thanks!!!

@@KarlBoyesPoolLife - hit some balls right after watching the video and I was amazed how easy it was to kill the cue ball. Also, my last BCA vegas team (8 ball) made the realization that nearly all of our misses were when we hit softly-trying to finesse the ball in and not letting our stroke out. This really allowed me to keep my stroke, pocket the ball and hold for position better than a soft shot ever could. Feel kinda dumb as I always viewed a draw shot that turned over to follow prior to the object ball as a mistake-a poor stroke 🙁

I have no basis for this, but I imagine some folks might shy away from the drag shot because any bit of inadvertent spin below center will curve the cue ball slightly and take it possibly off course. Feel like soft shots are okay as long as they're fairly short, like the second example with the 7 down the rail. I would roll that all day, even on your drag shot it's a big far from the rail for my liking. But yeah you don't really ever want to roll a ball the length of the table so I agree with the drag for that shot in the 3rd example.

Karl, I've used a drag shot or what I thought was a drag shot. It seems when you do it the cue ball still tends to travel a bit, whereas, when I do it, my stick is actually sliding on the felt, thereby really killing the cue ball upon impact. I suppose one way is just more severe than the other, but the concept is the same. Agree?
