Tears of Scotland
By Karliene Reynolds

Tears of Scotland
The rural pipe and merry lay
No more shall cheer the happy day ;
No social scenes of gay delight
Beguile the dreary winter night ;
No strains but those of sorrow flow
And nought be heard but sounds of woe,-
While the pale phantoms of the slain
Glide nightly o'er the silent plain
O baneful cause, O fatal morn
Accursed to ages yet unborn!
The sons against their father stood
The parent shed his children's blood
Yet, when the rage of battle ceased
The victor's soul was not appeased;-
The naked and forlorn must feel
Devouring flames and murdering steel!
The rural pipe and merry lay
No more shall cheer the happy day ;
No social scenes of gay delight
Beguile the dreary winter night ;
No strains but those of sorrow flow
And nought be heard but sounds of woe,-
While the pale phantoms of the slain
Glide nightly o'er the silent plain

I'm picturing a lone Scottish king bloody sword held limply in hand as he gazes over a bloody Battlefield. The bodies of his men and enemies piled high as tears fell silent down his face.

The battle of Culloden in April 1746 broke the power of the highland clans and ended the Jacobite rebellion of Bonnie Prince Charlie. In its aftermath the English carried out the genocidal highland clearances. Most of the population was murdered, starved, or forced to emigrate.

Just a quick tidbit, the clearance was not 'the English' as is sometimes mistaken. It was a protestant British led ethnic cleansing of a Catholic Gaelic region.

Not "England." The Jacobite Rebellions had supporters who were English, Scottish, Welsh, and Irish, as well as those who passionately supported the Hanoverian government from all those locations. More Scots supported King George than Bonnie Prince Charlie. Many more simply stayed neutral. It's also worth noting that often Lowland Scots were more ferociously anti-Highlander than their English countrymen, since they had a history of dealing with Higland raids and banditry. And yes, some of it just came down to a nasty helping of prejudice.

By the same logic you have the romans have the same right to the land as the anglo-saxons and by extension french as romanized-celts have the same right. Britain is formed of 4 countries united in one nation and not being the same ethnicity(welsh,irish,scotish,english) it is at the mind of a cock that it was not united by dances and songs. Scots and romans were fighting when the first germanic tribes just arrived on british soil for the joke to be more funny.
