The Gloom
Written by Karliene Reynolds
Cello by Roxane Genot bit.ly/39HHapn
Artwork by Slava Gerj
Mixed by Nick Dawes www.mixing-mas...
- | LYRICS |-
She lives in murk and shadow
Cold as the alleys of stone
She's a blur in the window
A prisoner of the underworld
She watches life from the gloom
Friends she lost and lovers too
That simple life she once knew
Before the cursed dark consumed
And every clock is broken
And every step is hopeless
Living in the gloom
And every day gets longer
Till no one can remember her
Lost in the gloom
She sings a song to the moon
The loneliest song you ever knew
Of friends she lost, lovers too
Of life before she fell to gloom
She watches life from the gloom
Friends she lost and lovers too
That simple life she once knew
Before the cursed dark consumed

Dear Karliene, this song is another proof that your self written projects turn out to be the best. The lyrics touch my soul on the deepest level one could imagine. You and the wonderful Roxane made it sound like magic. Thank you so much for this and all the other songs. You are a constant in my life. Never stop singing and never stop believing in yourself!!!

As I listen to this, I image either beginning credits or end credits to a show or movie that revolves around a witch/enchantress who is living alone and tries to cope with her breaking heart that she knows will never be fixed.

@Onyx Vampraze I too suffer from depression and anxiety but whenever I listen to the haunting yet beautiful voice of Karliene(I have a playlist on Spotify, over 12 hours long of her music), it also uplifts me, be strong, I’m taking it a day at a time, the struggle is real, but it’s a battle I’m going to win eventually 🤗

This makes me think of a really sad immortal girl who has to watch all her loved ones die because she can't. The clocks are unimportant to her now because time is a blur and she feels hopeless with life never ending. Really gorgeous song and I love this new little album it's amazing.

Enchanting, but in a meloncholy way. Incredibly beautiful, along with the images it brings up in the mind! I see a young woman draped in a dark green dress, torn and frayed at the edges. She's trapped, stuck in a shadow state of limbo, unable to escape the cobbled streets of a great city. She wanders, watching, wishing to return to the feeling of being alive that she sees on all the faces of those who pass her by. Her voice can be heard, however, and many of those who are trapped in their own meloncholy sit and listen to her song late at night, before the pub's last call.

I see a girl in a women's body hiding in a shadowy tower, she looks out the window and remembers briefly between daydreams of better days that she is alone... and the emotion of forlorn consumes her, longing for those she cared for as a song of remorse plays on her lips.

5 thumbsdowns? How could anyone, even the most ignorant of trolls, thumbsdown this? I've been listening to it nonstop since I woke up an hour after it premiered 15 hours ago. I don't understand how anyone could not appreciate the haunting beauty of this? Ah, you new artists are breaking my heart. This is the second premiered video in the last 30 days that ripped my heart out and held it hostage. This is what art is, the very heartwrenching epitome and essence of it. I am so very glad to experience this with you. Ah, yes, and please send my regards also to the incredible masterful artists Roxane, Slava, and Nick, if you can? Karliene and Roxane are especially awe-inspiring. This is so wonderful. Thank you so much for sharing. (I can't believe Karliene is actually her name and not a pseudonym! It is soo beautiful!)

Omg ok so: lyrics are PERFECTION, cello is a MASTERPIECE, this whole thing is so TOUCHING, EMOTIONALLY! Karliene you are brilliant, I am in awe. I can't help but wonder if this related to depression, I struggled with it at one point, and some of the lyrics, to me anyway, kinda describe what that feels like. Either way, I adore this song!!

Elise Lestrange-Lannister Thank you so much for your beautiful words. And yes, the whole EP is very much inspired by my own battle with depression and anxiety which I’ve had since I was a teenager. I suppose I’m trying to create something beautiful from something so awful. I hope you’re doing much better with it all now? :-)

@@Karliene Of course, I love you and your music! And I'm so glad that you're channeling your battles into it! Personally I've been doing better with depression, havent had like a big depressive episode in like 2 years (yay) but my anxiety is a whole other beast. It's really tough to live with sometimes, so I absolutely understand where you're coming from, especially now with all the college/university stuff I'm trying to figure out/actually just worrying about

This song was like being on an operating table, and watching myself be cut open to see my heart beating. This came out at the right time; we’re all in our own Underworld, waiting for this to be over. Watching our lives pass by, simply waiting for the night to claim our minds again. I’m listening to this right before bed, looking around a dark room. And this just hits me right in the chest. Wonderful to hear you sing again; please be there to greet us when we make it out.

This fits great for a mermaid/siren character of mine in a story I'm starting to write. She comes in a few chapters in at least, and she can shed her tail to walk on land for short periods of time. But she falls in love with my main character, Sam, who is in a war with the dragon gods and becomes one himself. She eventually kills another member of the dragon pantheon and takes her place in it in order to save Sam from the darkness consuming him, as each dragon he kills he takes their place, and as he does he loses a piece of himself. Eventually what makes Sam Sam will be gone but Lucia made her sacrifice of becoming a part of the dragon pantheon to save him. I don't know yet if she'll succeed.

HOLY FUCK!!!!!!😱😔💞💞💞💞💞 This is so intense to me, my mom has been homeless for over 17 years now... The darkness of her thoughts & experiences have consumed her far beyond the understanding of most minds... You have no idea how this hits home so INTENSELY... TEARS are falling from one who CAN NOT SAVE another... We can only save ourselves from the darkness that lies within... We ALL have it whether or not we acknowledge it... Yet we ALSO are FULL of so much LIGHT... Just sometimes have to get thru the darkness to see the light... Some fall short of reaching the light switch & only know how to suffer in life... Words can't describe the feeling one has... The hopelessness, the loneliness... 😔😔😔 But this HOLY FUCK! 😱😱😱😱😱 I FELT THIS WITH EVERY OUNCE OF FIBER IN THIS BODY OF FLESH...💜🦋🌻🍃🐝🍂🐛🍁

Am I way off the mark or is this inspired by Persephone and her abduction to the Underworld by Hades? I know “death of the author,” is a thing and art is subjective, but it fits more lines than anything else I can think of. It’s also a beautiful reflection on isolation and its oftentimes accompanying depression. I’ve been sick since I was a kid and there was a whole decade where not one single person knew I was alive outside my family and the mail man. At my high school I was awarded for good grades (despite not having any teachers at that point, being at home full time), and people asked, “Do you even GO here?” I had migraines about ten days a month, so I’d be stuck in darkness listening to audiobooks on the very lowest volume setting, get one hot meal a day after dark (which was forever in summer, at 9:00) when my Mom would trade my last night’s empty plate with the fresh one and we’d whisper about what the day had held for my family. It was hard to live like that, with that and other pain; back spasms so bad it was hard to breathe, id sometimes pass out or vomit, and only have about a minute of warning from being okay to full lockdown and an explosion of pain. And it went on for YEARS. I had no reason to expect it would ever get better; the best treatments we had failed. I was just… in this darkness and silence and pain, and that was my entire world for a third of the time, for 5-6 years. Eventually we tried an off-label use of medication for my migraines, I started wearing corsets for a few hours a day to help give my back a break, then after some heat, it was safe to start some light yoga and gain strength. Things got worse again for me, but then I met my fiancé. It’s still a struggle. But now I’m not alone, it isn’t silent, and someone with no family ties is choosing to step into my messed up world, to bear witness and love me despite all the complications. It makes all the difference. In my mind I can easily think of the abduction of Persephone and substitute the cause of my illness, and her time in the Underworld as bad days. Spring, when she and her mother (and thereby the World) rejoice that she’s returned to them, those would be those rare and fleeting good days I could actually go downstairs and spend some time with the people I love. A very powerful song. I’m just glad it feels more apt to a previous chapter than the one I’m in now, but I feel it, for everyone still in The Gloom, however that is personified for them.
