Im sorry to destroy your believes, but she is the most overrated woman in history. She didn't achieve anything in a military sense, she raided some villages that weren't prepared and had no defense. When she first met a real threat in form of a Roman army she rallied the families to witness her victory... and got DESTROYED because she made a dumb mistake of charging into the romans in a chokepoint.
@Petaurista135 жыл бұрын
@@GamePandaXXL People need myths and people need heroes. Most commonly praised insurogence was basically pure waste of humans and buildings with only effect being death of any on our side and complete demolition of capital city of our country. And it's not my opinion it's opinion of some participants and leader of our army (who actually wanted to send commanders who started it for court martial, don't blame me, if anybody disagree go to Monte Cassino Polish war cementary, or Jordan Park in Krakow to talk to his ghost). Still talking about it in that way is considered anti-patriotic. People don't want to believe that commanders who are their heroes were simply idiots. Biggest than Boudica could ever be, if I know right she was fighting for something. Our capital city? 3,5 months after insurogence failed "winning army" fled because another army came and it was end of war for region. It was comlpetly useless in any way but to make something to write poems about. But people don't need that knowledge. Army leaders need, because the need to not repeat same mistakes. People need uplfting. And riding villages? Our another hero was man who actually betrayed goverment and performed military coup which cost 379 lives (none of enemy, as usual during civil wars) to rule country. People prefer to remember him as man who probably saved whole country by stopping russian invasion.
@vladdracul50725 жыл бұрын
@@Petaurista13 That's different. Polish resistance never stood a chance and would have been wiped out eventually, had it not been for the Red Army pushing the Germans out of the country. Boudicca actually had a small chance throwing the Romans out of Britain, but it was wasted by the Celts' very poor battlefield tactics, as GamePanda correctly stated.
@Grigeral2 жыл бұрын
@@GamePandaXXL she literally took London from the Romans, defeating an estimated 80,000 Romans in the battle from what I recall decades ago in class. She also destroyed what was St. Albans and Colchester. These aren't just small skirmishes. Perhaps the Romans weren't really giving it their all until the final battle where they utterly crushed her, but they still weren't just 'raiding some villages' either lol. The reason she lost was because she was overconfident, not dumb. Every battle they'd had before then had been a total route with the Roman forces getting completely annihilated. They were so confident, they blocked themselves in with their own wagons so family could watch the slaughter of the Romans. However, with their proper commander in charge, the reason she lost was simply because the Romans 'were' that good. Their tactics were that effective. Add to that the fact her army was too large to effectively relay orders to change tactics when the usual ones weren't working (though this is likely speculation) and then having nowhere to run when things started turning badly. Ultimately though, you destroyed nothing by saying she didn't achieve anything because htat's inaccurate. She destroyed several major cities and managed to raise one of the largest armies the country had ever seen before that point and used it to defeat one on the most unbeatable forces of the time period on multiple occasions in extremely decisive victories. Her loss was brutal, as was the reason she rose to the power she did in the first place.
@GamePandaXXL2 жыл бұрын
@@Grigeral She didn't defeat 80.000 romans in battle. She killed 70.000 civilians while burning down three cities including London and then she lost to the very first real army she encountered. An army that she heavily outnumbered. And she lost out sheer stupidity, thinking she would just demolish them. 80.000 is the amount of her losses according to Tacitus (which is disputed but they all agree she lost heavily)

It is less known than this old story that it wasn´t only Boudicca. Your ancestors had beaten the legions and invade the city of Rome in at least seven times or so, i read once (more or less, my memory it is not so good). It happened occasionely when the tribes was able to forgot temporally their ancient rivalities and make a common cause to do a victorious raid against Rome. But they only did it temporally too, just avenge some thing or take the loot or the rescue and then leave the Empire just as it was. The error of the roman "ambassador" was to despise so hard the old ways of a tribe and give them a reason to forget these rivalities with the violation of the daughters just because he cannot accept a lady ruler. Once the tribes was in accord again, Boudicca had all that she needed to assemble not only the Iceni, there were many other tribes, to make the romans fall...temporally. Just as in the past times. But only her story was popular...the other times are almost forgotten, except for the speciailized history books...
@caltie Жыл бұрын
@@daguroswaldson257 I think that i remember that story...it was made with a very smart and tricky ambush, if i remember it well. Romans tended to confide too much in their renown or gold to impress the "barbarians", and sometimes they rely too much in the service and submission of the same people that they had invaded and made prisioners or have their kin killed in the past...in fact probably that was one of the causes of the fall of their empire.

@JW McCabe No such thing as Welsh in first century Britannia. The Iceni were from East Anglia and she was likely Brithonic. A DNA check has found very little Brithonic DNA in Wales. The biggest modern concentration of brithonic DNA can be found in Yorkshire. Boadicea is in fact a Victorian spelling mistake. In the document by Tacitus the name does look a little like Boadicea but we know it to be Boudica or even Budoc.
