I love these history videos. As a history teacher myself I love that Doom is one of those games where player contributions will be easily immortalized for decades if not centuries so long as technology does not regress. The DEMO file is really a fantastic tool that allows for a complete duplication of any one speedrun, and one that's easy to preserve aswell. It's similar with how vanilla professional starcraft can be watched in real time since some old tournaments in south korea used demo files aswell. Games like doom will endure where other titles will fade into obscurity. I mean who's gonna remember Overwatch or some COD record as clearly as one would a Doom record? Only Doom has a means of preserving gameplay in a away that's accessible and suitable for archiving. When battlenet goes belly up away goes any hope of salvaging first person sources from those "services" called games is gone forever. Doom on the other hand, is indeed eternal so keep at it all you absolute legends.
@DracXBelmont
@DracXBelmont 3 жыл бұрын
while i agree with the majority of this comment, the idea that the history of these games is going to be impossible to document or salvage is just silly when everything is archived on the internet in some form or another these days. that, and, well ... overwatch doesn't have a campaign to speedrun or document, so the only history would be tournament matches *anyway*, much like blizzard's other multiplayer experiences, and the most famous and well-known of those are already documented on youtube or some other site.
@Midgert89
@Midgert89 3 жыл бұрын
@@DracXBelmont Problem is there is still no way to fully restore entire gameplay sessions like with the demo files, other than large filesize video recordings. The quality of the source material for modern titles will deteriorate as companies invest less and less into maintaining the games they set aside. Sure games are more complex and there's other source material, but it's not quite the same thing as having access to an input recording precise down to the last frame.
@DracXBelmont
@DracXBelmont 3 жыл бұрын
@@Midgert89 Oh, of course not, but I'd argue that even Doom's contemporaries would be difficult to archive / restore gameplay sessions because Doom's demo feature is something that is only very rarely done, with Doom being the main one to do it well. So, it's definitely not something that's inherent to modern gaming, at least in my opinion.

the issue with comparing overwatch to doom is that overwatch is continually updated meaning even if they had demo support it would be broken over time. if you look at TF2 they had to create an entirley seperate branch of the game that predates jungle inferno due to the rework of the pyro.

A few inaccuracies in his video, but nothing major. On map07 killing all the mancubi does lower 4 walls. Killing the arachnotrons however raises sectors. They raise as far as the shortest lower texture. In this case this is a step texture of height 16. This makes it possible to reach the exit switch, which is on a platform 32 units higher than th main grassy area. The maximum height the player can step up is 24, and the mancubus platforms are lowered to be 8 units above the ground level. This is why the boosts and rocket jumps work. When it comes to recordings of multiple maps for full game / episode runs, this was a feature that wasn't added until version 1.4, released 28.06.1994. Up until then demos would end when the player hit the exit. This version also added a parameter to increase the maximum demo length. The original buffer of 128kb was far too small for episode runs as they were played back then. Doom demo recordings take up about 140bytes per second + a one-time header, so with a 128kb buffer you can only record a bit over 15 minutes of gameplay. (4*35*60*15 = 126000 bytes). Recording with a bigger buffer would in most cases require 6 or more commonly 8 megs of ram, as a bigger buffer would leave too little memory for the rest of the game game on the bigger levels. This limited the audience a bit.

This is a classic progression video by Karl Jobst: -The progression of the runs is astonishing. -He said "[insert player] would achieve...this run." -He used Unused Song 2 from The Flintstones after showing footage of the final run. -The final time shown in the video is absolutely fucking godlike. But this time, it's different. Because the other 2 videos like this (the one about The Chasm and the other one about The Slipgate Complex) had final times that physically cannot be beaten (32 and 19 respectively). This one however, looks like it could maybe eventually perhaps possibly even go below 17:00. Maybe. We'll just have to wait and see...

@@fojisan2398 Sorry for the misunderstanding then. That's really cool, I'm surprised you managed to get it to run at all, especially the sound. My only experience with Doom's vanilla engine was through the Depths of Doom Trilogy compilation, but that was in the 90's, when I was just an unappreciative wean lol.

Thank you for making this video! I'm a Doom veteran that started way back in 1994. I have never attempted any type of Doom speed running before even though I would love to try it. The problem is...I have medical issues that effect my memory and while I'm a damn good player there's no way I could remember all of those precise movements. I have however placed times in terrorist hunts on expert with my team in Rainbow Six Vegas 2 on the Xbox 360. The last time I checked we were still tied for first place but...we did it with only two players the other top 10 teams were full at 4 people. When we tied first place we were practicing and it...just happened. That's why we were not running a full team. Addendum- I sure wish Ubisoft would do a remaster of the two Rainbow Six Vegas games as I would try for it again. ;)

I've been saying for at least 15 years now that Doom is the most important franchise to speedrunning. I believe it's also the oldest game with organized records going back to late 1994, when the first speedrun for Doom 2 was posted to the Compet-N.
