In this video we discuss Snoot Lighting modifiers. Snoots, when placed over a studio lamp create a small, defined circle of light.
It is a useful tool for different lighting applications and can be used with or without honeycomb grids to adjust the size and diffusion of the light.
Homemade snoots can also be made using materials like cardboard, but CAUTION must be taken to avoid fire hazards.
Snoots produce sharper and more defined shadows compared to honeycomb grids, making them ideal for product photography or creating strong, defined shadows.
Video Take-Aways:
💡 The snoot is a lighting modifier that creates a small, defined circle of light.
💡 Snoots can be used with or without honeycomb grids to adjust the size and diffusion of the light.

💡 Snoots produce sharper and more defined shadows compared to honeycomb grids.
💰 Snoots are relatively inexpensive lighting modifiers.
💡 Snoots are ideal for product photography or creating strong, defined shadows.
⚠️ CAUTION: 🔥 Fire hazards should be considered.

I'm lucky that I discovered snoot a while ago. They can be more useful than most photographers can imagine. I made a number of snoots for my speedlights from Pringle potato crisps cans.

Thank you for debunking “hard light is hard light, it all gives the same crisp shadows”. It’s really good to know about the nuances of these different modifiers.

Quick question Karl, and again, I'm very new to photography and extremely new to lighting and modifiers. Starting at around 3:30 of the video you make the following statements: (speaking about honeycomb grids with the snoot): "That then can make the patch of light a little more bit diffused or make it even smaller" and a bit later 4:17 the small patch of light on the wall that is that is "a lot softer because of the multiple honeycomb grids". I have "Googled" the properties of honeycomb grids to death and the only qualities talked about of this modifier with or without a snoot is to contain spillage of light, make the size of the projected light smaller, and "harden" the light. Making the light "a little more bit diffused" never comes up in my reading, nor does softer. Can you take a moment to help answer this paradox? Again, thank you for taking the time and effort for these. Some of the best help available on KZbin. Sorry about the burn. Curious, when handling a metal snoot on a shoot, would it help to have oven mitts or thermal gloves?

Hi, yes also see my other video on this channel on honeycomb grids. What I was describing was simply the difference of the spot of light between the snoot and a honeycomb grid; A snoot creates a more defined circle of light with a more defined edge shadow, a honey comb grid also makes a spot of light but the edges of the circle are more diffused (not as sharp shadow). Another modifier we will be looking at soon uses a projector lens to make a small circle of light but this is focused light so the edge of the circle can be pin sharp or diffused by defocusing the lens, but you'll see that in another video. In this instance to describe the edge of the shadow of the circle as being sharper or more diffused it would probably have been better to use the word diffracted than diffused.

@EducationStudio Brilliant! Thank you so much and the response is very appreciated. I love the way you explain things and the preparation in getting it correct. I am sure in the near future, you may find me at Visual Education as a student. You are an excellent instructor, and thanks for taking the time.

Typically used for hair light. Only works if the model sits or stands still 🤪

There is also something called "lens projector" - even sharper shadows.

Demonstrating how he had burnt his forearm while working with the snoot, Karl burned his another forearm. 😆😆😆

Why arent snoots silver or white from the inside? Seems like it would have more output then...

I've often thought about this too but concluded that the shape of the snoot wouldn't allow the reflected light an exit point anyway, as the light you see come out is more attributed to just the direct line of sight to the flash tube. The angle of a snoot would mean if it was silver it would reflect mostly back at the lamp head. Secondly it may be to do with heat as the light energy would build up more inside the snoot and back towards the lamp rather than dissipate outwards which could cause the flash lamp head to overheat. I could be wrong on but I'll check with the lighting manufacturers directly to find out.
