Last story: Rob, you're probably right about it being a lead generation business calling and not the actual contractor. But it the contractors get burned enough over bad leads, maybe they'll stop using such predatory services.

Story 6: No way that I would give up my sweet Pepper's ashes...nor my parents either for that matter (if they were passed at the time) if my sibling was like that. Story 7: OP actually DID do things a different way...for over a year. Maybe now OP's number will be removed...otherwise other people's time will continue to be wasted just like OPs.

I'm 70. I grew up in a suburb of Washington DC (at least grades 4 through 11, anyway). I went to public schools. The girls were not allowed to wear pants until I was a high school junior -- except during winter, when we could wear them UNDER our skirts or dresses.

The new resident fun: I was the only man and head nurse of a critical care unit long ago. I did a bit of cultural acclimation for them, things like bathing and deodorant, and to never, ever refuse advice from an experienced nurse. I pointed out that many staff had been working since the docs were in grade school, or before they were born. And never, ever treat them as servants or whores if you want to save your testicles.

In my calculus class in college, we were taught by a very capable professor (he had written math books, by the way), by the name of Dr. Horner. I think some of the books were, "A survey of college mathematics" and "Precalculus: Elementary functions and relations". I got an 'A' in the class, but came up with this poem in his honor: Dear Doctor Horner, I sit in a corner, The integrables do I spy, I add up the sums, But no answer comes, I wonder if numbers don't lie. [Added note: I wrote that 50 years ago.]

Honestly, with the last story, the contractor searching for leads that way needs to find one that 's LOCAL, and listens to the people they're calling. "Look guys, I rent. I have no say on what gets done around here, and I go through a property management company that talks to the landlord, who lives god knows where. You're wasting money by calling me."

Story 3: Do you want to talk to the boss or the one(s) who know what's going on around here... Story 4: Good job to both OP and our host here for reasons which are pretty obvious... Story 5: Good job Story 6: Glad to hear that OP stuck with what they believed. Story 7: OP, unless you know that the contractor is 100% the person your talked to from start to finish, you're just being a jerk. Thanks to all 7 OPs and Karma Stories for this episode.

The last story. I have figured out that if I don’t answer an unfamiliar phone call or if I connect the call but don’t speak there is just a hang up. I think the calling system thinks it’s reached another bot and doesn’t call again. Lol
@Procrastinator19482 күн бұрын
We used to get multiple calls per day from various unrecognized number and names, most of which I would simply send to voicemail. Sometimes, when I had nothing better to do, I'd pick up the phone and immediately hit the mute button, then wait for their robo dialer to hang up. As time and the scam calls go unanswered, their robo dialer keeps moving ones number further and further down the priority list. Now we get maybe 2-3 calls per week, which we still ignore. They have, however, recently been trying my cell number, but those are recognized as scam calls and blocked by my phone., so it never even rings through.

@merlinathrawes7462 күн бұрын
Don't interrupt story: OP, yes you did need to use the restroom. You needed it to get out of the line of immediate fire. Summer camp shirt story: Somebody wanted to make some extra money that day. But I can see the extra charge for the "rush" printing, even with no one else in queue and as you waited in store previously, well, that was justified. Still, making them play by the rules was well done. But you might want to go shopping for a new printer service. Nurses vs resident story: Some young doctors don't believe it when they're taught in medical school that THEY aren't the frontline of care and that the nurses are. They sometimes need a practical demonstration. Much like the military, officers vs NCOs. Slide rule story: Having used a slide rule many, many years ago back before calculators became common and as such were VERY expensive, I was pretty sure I knew where this story was going as soon as "no electronic calculators" came up in the story. There is a learning curve to using a slide rule, but once you've learned it, it's as fast or faster than a calculator. Skirt vs pants story: The public school my wife and I went to had a similar requirement for girls. Their dresses and skirts could be no shorter than 2 inches above the knee. I go to my grandkids schools and it just blows my mind what I see the kids wearing. What makes me laugh are these kids all bundled up for the cold... EXCEPT for the ripped jeans that do nothing to keep your legs warm (boys and girls) or the girls that are all bundled up, but are wearing short shorts. SMH Rob, I'll agree with the archaic dress rules, but some of the ridiculously permissive stuff needs to be stopped as well. You can pretty much go to any public middle or high school where I live and see plenty of cheek, and I don't mean the ones on faces. There's also a difference between low-cut tops and so low it all hangs out if you sneeze. Ashes story: I don't think I'd want an awful sibling like that to have my pet's ashes. I might go to a vet and ask for ashes they were going to dispose of though. Phone number story: OP, if you get the beeping sound of their phone connecting, that's your cue to hang up without saying a word.
@LegendStormcrow2 күн бұрын
Last Story: I agree, however, how else are you going to get the contractors to lean on the lead generators? Just for the love of God, don't tell the contractor you'll be there when you won't. Tell them the truth, and tell them the telespammers wouldn't leave you alone.

You've got to look at the big picture. If the contractors are getting burned when answering a call from this business. Then not only will they not use that business anymore but will also tell others not to either. In the short term it hurts the contractor. In the long term the business itself will die

The pizza people had flyers and billboards with OP's number (say 7 instead of 1 in the last place). So OP got creative. Sure you can come in, ask for a 8" for the proce of a 12". Today is 2 free if you order 3. Today is 2 toppings free on every 12" pizza. Your pizza is free if we sont give it to you in 15 minutes After a week, the owner phoned screaming. OP told him nicely that this would continue as long as the flyers and billboards carried OP's number!

Do the kids have a choice what school they get sent to? I know I sure didn't. Sure you can pick your college and skip the ones with dress code, but for anything prior to that it's not the student's choice.
@tailsofchaos2 күн бұрын
That's really the dumbest thing you ever said. They can just make up rules on the fly like how most other jobs do. There's one story of a student for the dress code but medical reasons I think it was it couldn't be done. And yes, they forced that dress code rule even though it was dumb. Whatever happened, it literally backfired and the dress code was changed but the teachers were included now. And guess what? They had only 2 weeks before the code goes into action and the teachers were mad about that. In short they were enforcing their rules on the students for years (and it was still a dumb rule what it was. I just know for OP it was medical related and doctors was included) with those teachers not lasting for 2 weeks.
