On the 1st of July at approximately 10AM PDT we launched Karman Alpha! 🚀
We were aiming for an altitude of about 100,000 feet, but unfortunately experienced a motor blowout on the upper stage instead of a full burn. The rocket instead reached an altitude of around 22,000 feet. It is believed that this damaged the avionics bay above, preventing the parachutes from deploying, resulting in a ballistic descent.
The trip to California was a very valuable experience for the team and we have learnt a lot about how to operate a launch in the Mojave Desert. We were able to recover the (damaged) bits of both stages, and filmed absolutely everything, so you can expect to see a documentary about the trip later this year!
