Karnivool have gotten me through some pretty tough times. Struggles with addiction, grief, trauma, love, pain and loss. They've been a band I go back to at some of my lowest points and it helps remind me that the world has beauty, even in the tragedy. Now, when I'm feeling at one of my lowest points once again, this comes out. I came here straight from a Sisyphus 55 video about the "desire to simply not exist", which I resonate all too well with. I'm generally someone who really struggles to fully experience feelings, I repress them automatically most of the time, but now I'm sitting here sobbing and it's like a breakthrough, a release and all the pent up hopelessness is flowing out of me and I feel like I'm ready to try again, to pick all the pieces up and work towards better things. Pain, emptiness, oblivion; they're all part of life, but so are wonder, love and amazing experiences. It's worth it to just keep going, learn from everything you can while living in each moment, experiencing every bit of it.

I feel like this song does such a good job of including classic Themata grunge, Sound Awake depth and progressive base and Symmetry's lead guitar licks - perfectly brings the different album styles together imo. Agreed. As much as I love Asymmetry, and think it’s a masterpiece in its own right, nothing will ever beat sound awake. It’s quite possibly the greatest rock album of all time imo. The sound of this track is really reminiscent of that for me, and I do hope to hear more of that style on this album.

I come from a family that has been ravaged by addiction, myself included. This song has truely invited a reflection on my part, many times since I first heard it the day it came out. I'm gonna share my interpretation of the lyrics. 'Are you close enough?': The anger that can come from the feeling on impotence that comes from someone you love teetering on the edge of throwing thier life away. 'I don't wanna prey on your honesty': Sometimes the truth hurts, and it's difficult not to punish someone when they tell you something that upsets you. I have learned that my attempts to 'help' in the past had also involved some type of attempt to 'control' the person. 'So happy to feel to much, Given this vice here is nothing new': The total possesion of rage and depression that comes from someone who is abusing. Like trying to save a snake from a fire. 'Cynical cycle, run like a rat on a wheel, pay for the thrill, reset the cycle': Insight into the repetative nature of a the habit, the price being the good that one can bring into life, and the deep connection one can feel with those they love. 'With true patience, all will be found': I have found that by accepting the suffering in life we can be given truth, but not without patience and persitence. An ideology is nothing without a way of being. My human experience has included pain, and I have felt the pull towards the relief that can come from substance abuse. But it has only ever robbed me of myself in my truest form; my clarity. 'We awake and we crawl through the ashes, fein an illusion because everyone is watching us, here in effect we have cause for the habit': This verse. Holy shit. I have battled with the balance between being selfish enough to be disciplined and competent while being selfless enough to be loving and compassionate. When I was abusing I hated the idea that anyone was worrying about me, so I became a liar; A short term solution to what I think the real problem was. Without the balance between compassion and discipline I would oscillate violently between the two extremes, thinking I was cruel to focus on myself instead of those I love, or thinking myself pathetic when I degraded due to self neglect, both leading to terrible overcorrections. I wanted to either see the world in black and white, generalize, make progress at all cost, or see the world in a grand spectrum of nuance and inticracy, which lead to inaction in favor of endless consideration. I lied because I thought that I could create my life in others eyes; I am as they see me. I no longer think this is the case. I am not as they see me, I am not as I see myself, the world is not as I see it. I am but the experiences that I have had from this perspective and the decisions that were made as consequence. 'Fail and I'll follow you down': It's easy to justify a relapse when your family has given up. We are products of our environment and everytime we act outside of habit it comes at a cost; an mental/physical tax. 'How can you say to me honestly, that this is the way that it has to be?, give me something to believe, you're gonna need all it takes': This exclaimation of powerlessness is perhaps the moment that I realized that I cannot control the ones that I love, but I can listen, I can articulate my perspective and I can inspire. It's a truely difficult thing to overcome, it's gonna need all it takes. Thankyou to the boys in Karnivool, your art has touched me.
