1:57 is one of the moments of pure brilliance by Gavin Harrison. For a large part, this song is written is 5/4, which gives the song a really nice sense of hesitation. In this section, Stevens sings "Like the Harridan your are" as an anacrusis for the new theme starts at the 1. That new theme has a spacious groove to it. So instead of drumming to the 1, Gavin extends his 16ths until the 2. This adds perfectly to the goove of the next theme and the song overall, and at the same time it's so distinctive and creative. Amazing stuff!
THIS. I have been thinking about this since the moment I heard it. Gavin well and truly showed up for this. What a legend.

This was certainly worth waiting 12 years for. In hindsight, i'm happy they didn't continue after The Incident. It would probably have resulted in an album which didn't live up to their standards. More of the same so to say, no progression. This sounds like something fresh and new while still being totally Porcupine Tree. Can't wait to hear the rest of the album!
@northtimo6663 жыл бұрын
Funny thing is that this and couple of other the upcoming songs were written around The Incident era to be follow up for a new PT album. I guess he then explored these type of ideas for Raven and HCE and they held these song ideas on a hard drive waiting for a better moment.
@santibanks3 жыл бұрын
@@northtimo666 well it sounds to me that there were demos written after The Incident (like the last social media post also mentions) which was probably a rough demo or sketch. But you can clearly hear a lot of elements in here which Steven developed pretty late in his solo works. There is more advanced harmony in here which is indeed from his Raven/HCE period. But aspects of his vocal delivery are very similar to stuff from To the bone and TFB. Some of these arpeggiating synths are also very much his style from his last two albums.
@ShatteredArm13 жыл бұрын
I actually felt like The Incident didn't live up to their usual standards.
@santibanks3 жыл бұрын
@@ShatteredArm1 i tend to agree, there are a lot of great moments on there but also some "fillers" on disk 1. And I guess they felt that a direct follow up would be "even less" than The Incident. As a drummer who is learning this song I can say that this fill is actually not extremely difficult as it’s mostly rolls and/or 16th/32nd notes. But furthermore it is difficult because of its timing. On starts on beat 5 and extends to 1 of the measure after. Furthermore it is hard physically because it is fast and goes immediately into the chorus groove which is relatively hard anyway.
@IrisvS_762 жыл бұрын
These kind of fills when he’s performing live, at first, turn on: surprise me because most of the time he plays it live a tad different than on the album. Tune in: At second it makes me tighten up because it sometimes feels like he’s not going to make it to the bridge in time and makes me think: how in the héll are you going to fix this, Gavin!!! Drop out: And right at the moment where he weaves his patterns and lifts the song to the point where they all get together again, I get the chills because I feel relieved and exited at the same time. Really, this working man makes my senses go nuts during a live show! Brilliant and I 💖 it. Can’t wait to hear this song, but most of all PT, live again.
