I feel like as quality education gets less accessible we're entering a sort of second dark age. Humans make things up to cope with the incomprehensible. Idk it's 2am and I'm listening to this before bed to relax. Stay safe everyone 💖

IMHO It’s not due to lack of education or information, it’s the OG social media influencers, the persuasion industrial complex. Executive capitalism thrives in an anxious environment. Bernays boys found young fertile minds with unexploited incomes and the grifter franchise got organised and profitable on a corporate scale. Divide and conquer. Political theatre for emotional issues while they transfer public power to private profit relentlessly. It’s all pretty obvious to even the most skeptical history theorist. The community needs to find it’s true voice within the system and use its collective enthusiasm to bring about a world more suitable for most of them, not just the least. We are seduced by their bread and circuses, and see enemies amongst those who share our common interests. We have become consumers of our own industry via the a long running pyramid scheme of neo-colonialist parasites. We gotta kick the sugar rush side effects of funding a rich guys habit.

@@mr.dalerobinsonwell said, stop letting emotions and pride cloud criticism. Learn to communicate and compromise. Come to an understanding so there can be middle ground. Worthwhile sacrifices could be made for the betterment of our civilization. We need to make up for the amount of division and hate culture we see. If you do not seek to carve into stone then you are cursed to be forgotten. We live in an age where carving into stone is the least you can do

What is interesting to me is how they believed if God could do something, then the Devil could also do the same thing. Which means they thought the Devil was of equal power and strength, a peer to God. This is interesting because it was once pointed out to me that in the Ten Commandments, it’s often translated as “thou shall have no other god but me,” rather than “there is no other god but me.” That acknowledges that there are other gods or beings as powerful as God, but he doesn’t want his followers worshipping them. It’s just an interesting thing to consider, that at different eras people might believe in other gods but not worship them for various reasons.

One of my pastors in the 90s, in a pretty liberal denomination, told us how a parishioner once marched up to her & announced, “If the King James Bible was good enough for Jesus Christ, it’s good enough for me!” I always imagine King James as completely delusional because of this, which is the one thing that really isn’t his fault!

There is quite an extensive literature about mental health in the 16-17th century. Melancholy was affecting many sovereigns and nobles, the most famous being Rudolph II of Hapsburgh. Some even blame it on the scarcity of sunlight of the Little Ice Age

Love this episode and all others. For clarification about Christian reasoning - Based on what I've learned in both catholic and protestant churches, Eve's sin is no greater than Adams.I think that is the reasoning of certain individuals rather than Christian reasoning. Thanks for another fascinating journey through time and place.

I wonder if the bit about running out of breath while flying is based on how the air gets thinner at higher elevations? Maybe James read some accounts of explorers and mountaineers that might have described difficulty breathing at high elevations and connected that to his ideas about witches and flying.

And apropos Holy Roman Empire. since you are interested in fashion of the past it is worth to know that the 'button hole' for knops was a surprisingly late innovation (till then loops were used). It was invented in Germany/Holy Roman Empire in the 13. century (also later some 'button hole' machines). And this had an impact on the entire fashion of the 13. and 14. century (till today of course). In the first wave of fashion with button holes for knops you have for that reason seen a lot of 'button rows' on clothes. For ordinary people it might be interesting to be able to recognize fashion with button holes as such, because then you can know that this fashion cannot be from before the 13. century.

@@ellaisplotting knob, button, nub ...the invention to create a hole into a pant (or other kind of clothes) and use a knob/button/nob to hold it in position that to avoid sliding etc. came - as said - surprisingly late for the mankind (and was invented in the 13. century in Germany/Holy Roman Empire). Its also interesting because holes as such (e.g. in belts) already existed. Just not as intentional created holes with knobs/buttons/nobs mechanisms.

The book of Job is actually super depressing. God does actually tell Satan he can do whatever he likes to Job and then sort of forgets about him. All of Job's friends are like "dude, just confess, you're obviously being punished for something". When God finally visits Job and Job says "why'd you let my life get ruined by Satan?" God just replies with "do you know how hard it is to be God? It's not all about you Job. Quit whining, it's just a bit of disease. Here, have a kid and cheer yourself up." So, the idea that Satan can only do what God allows him to makes sense to them because of this random book in the bible. It really does stand out as a bleak and miserable story without proper resolution. PS. I'm remembering this off the top of my head without checking. Consult your nearest old testament for the full dark deets.

if one want really know more about witchcraft, witchhunt and what was believed in Europe then you have to read better the most influential original sources from which also Jakobs 'Daemonia' and the stuff from James come from anyway. And this is the book "HEXENHAMMER"/"MALLEUS MALEFICARUM" ('German/Latin) by Heinrich Kramer (Dominican, Theologist, Inquisitor). This was the fanatic who influenced indirectly or directly most of Europe. This book was first printed in 1486 in Speyer/Germany (at that time the Holy Roman Empire). Before that this guy went to Rome and talked with Pope Innocent III. about that and tried to convince him. This resulted in the Pape's Bulle ""Summis desiderantes affectibus" (also called 'Hexenbulle/Witch bulle'). This bulle was just valid on the assumption that Heinrich Kramers arguments were true - which was never confirmed. In theory it was even not a big deal but a minor buerocracy act, likely because Heinrich Kramer was a charismatic guy and the pope in a weak moment just gave into to do a kind of compromise. In fact no other pope ever gave such a bulle out and the entire matter was against the inner church belief, not really official and never accepted/supported by all other popes, even not really by innoccent III. himself. Witchhunt in general was also not supported by almost all relevant rulers/kings/nobilities. The problem with that bulle was that it confirmed the existence of Witchcraft' as such (again, in difference to the Christian and also inner-church beliefs). Heinrich Kramer used this bulle in his book as 'official' but this was still not enough to convince the representatives of the church in general and high ranked clerics. Therefor he created a fake recognition from the theological faculty in Cologne/Koeln AND worded everything additionally like that the Emperor himself also supported that officially (also fake). Important is that the bulle even if it was fully legal did not allow stuff like 'burning people' (only interrogation and arresting). Thats why he tried to give his agenda as much legacy as possible - even if most of that is faked. With that he started his witch hunts - and the book spread around. Because in general the church did not support 'witch hunts' (and the idea of the existence of witch craft - due to certain theological problems and consequences) Rome/different Popes often send own investigators to certain cases to interrupt 'witch hunts' AND to declare people for 'innocent' (sometimes even those investigators came under attack). Keep also in mind that while indeed in more cases women were the victims, all kind of people of all classes and ages could be victims of witch hunts.
