The thing that haunts me, is I always wondered if all the thousands of people who were executed for witchcraft throughout the years went to their graves knowing they were being wrongly accused and were being killed for NOTHING, or if the societal hysteria and religious attitudes and psychological pressure got to them too. Did all of them die knowing they had falsely confessed and they were innocent, or did some of them truly believe they really had been corrupted by the devil?

There's speculation that people with extreme mental illness thought that they themselves were witches on occasion, just like some criminals now attribute the divine or spiritual forces to their crimes

@@sarahwatts7152 I suspect it is fairly easy to convince a mentally ill person that they have met the devil and been corrupted. Plus, mentally ill people were in the past routinely described as 'possessed' .

About the animals: this was an interesting thing I learned in grad school in an animal studies in literature class. Folks were TERRIFIED of various animals that we consider just normal today and took them as bad omens and evil creatures (owls, bats, and cats). The ones they didn’t consider evil, like dogs and horses, were still often mistreated and abused and just seen as work tools (In England at least). People in England mainly didn’t start seeing animals as innocent and cute pets until the last couple centuries (roughly, I may be off here). Interestingly, the church in the 1800s and forward was often (not always I guess) a big proponent of caring for animals as arguments were made about humans being meant to care for creation. Vivisection (grotesque animal experiments) was a big topic that many church leaders spoke against, and even CS Lewis was speaking against it in the 30s and 40s.

Also the fear that devil can sneak by turning into animal that you see every day is terrifying. If it was something different they could knew it's the devil. Its nice to look at old painting imagining hell or the devil, they did really funny human - animal hibrids :D And ofc animals didn't have a soul etc.

This one was really excellent! I find it fascinating as I have an ancestor who was judged a witch in Salem, Mass. and hanged for, among other similar things, allegedly floating across a street without getting mud on her skirt, the obvious evidence being there was no much on her skirt. After all, what woman would ever think of holding up their skirt a bit to not drag it in the mud? The fact that she was an elderly widow who owned a very nice and well managed farm worth a great deal of money of course has nothing to do with all this. Her name was Susannah Martin and her questioning and testimony can be found on line.

The mention about the pin: they're saying they stuck a pin deeply into a spot that "the devil marked" and that she couldn't feel it. Likely they kept jabbing her with a pin and when she finally stopped reacting, they took it as a sign of the thing they were looking for. Along with outright shock, there are a variety of medical conditions that can cause numb spots in the body.

Even when there wasn't clearly a mark - like usually birthmarks or mole. They believed devil can hide it under the skin so they were looking for it with a pin - also they shaved all the hairs to look for the mark just by burning them - nice.

Judging by a book by the Mather pair of 'witch finders' there were also modifiable devices which would collapse basically, so that they didn't actually poke the person (or not enough to break the skin). So it could also have been deceitful 'testing'

It means a lot to me that you are speaking about the travesty that is people being so dark-natured as to go after others like this. I was being gangstalked and still do get intimidated and harassed to this day, after 4, 6, even 10 years after brushing past these types of people or allowing them to infiltrate my life fully. Living in a military town and a large city bordering Mexico makes it easy for the more rural or suburban areas to have all these sorts of crimes. I really hope the internet is my last and final place of hopefully finding some peace before I find a way to leave town(their goal, ultimately). I love all your work, Karolina! Thank you for sharing your incredible mind with is, dear. ❤

32:40 For the pin, it was customary to pick a spot on the accused's body and poke it with a pin. If they didn't feel anything, it was thought to be the mark of the devil. Often times this was done after the days of sleeplessness so their senses were dulled.

We very nearly went to live on Guernsey. When we were visiting, someone told us that you have to get off the island periodically to stop yourself going mad. The other thing is that I read that several hundred years ago different villages on the small island actually spoke different dialects of Guernsey French which is itself a language similar to Normandy French that almost nobody speaks now. Imagine a small island in the middle of the sea where people in the next door village don't speak the same language as you. That is surely a place that people could be accused of being witches. We didn't go to live there in the end because we bought a house in the street where Victor Hugo lived. The owner decided to sell it to somebody else - for less money! That was strange.

This reminds me of Chilling Adventures of Sabrina where the devil was a goat on his hind legs and they had to pledge themselves to him and all that stuff 😆 it was a freaky vibe, at least until the show became a campy musical towards the end... This whole drama is simultaneously so farcical and so heartbreaking. It's awful to think so many people lost their lives over this.

You remember the Snow White dancing and singing in the forest? We all know what it REALLY was...
@olgahein4384
@olgahein4384 Ай бұрын
Snow White dancing and singing in the forest is a pure Disney invention. In the actual story of Snow White there was no such thing. Instead, she was unsuccessfully po*soned twice before the apple (or rather, first the Queen tried to off her through tightlacing with a magical lace that would not ease up, the second time was a po*soned comb used as hair decoration) and the best part: The queen was invited to Snow White's wedding to the prince, like all rulers in the area, but when she arrived, she was forced into previously heated iron shoes (they were glowing red) that were burning the flesh on her feet off, and she was forced to dance in those shoes without rest, until she dropped de4d on the dance floor, while the smell grilled human flesh was still in the air.

Another interesting one is the Pendle witches. I think the events begin with a young woman being so terrified after a man has a stroke, which she thinks she caused by not buying something from him, that she turns herself in as a witch. And it basically turns into multiple family members and other neighbors executed as witches. It’s really sad how devastating this all was. It was like a plague but of fear and pettiness instead of illness.

Awfully convenient that a neighbor saw the third lady bruised and beaten and the devil got blamed for it. Smart thinking of her if she was the one who used it to her advantage, but I bet the husband was he one doing the beating. And if the questioning was as you suspected in a "did you do xyz" way, it's perfectly possible she could have been asked if it had been the devil who beat her and she just said yes :(

Well hasn't germany by far the most cases of witch trials(a german here)? But thank you for mentioning that it wasn't all beautiful smart women, but more isolated people with some enemies. Mostly women but also men and children and in rare cases animals. Also it was more prevalent in protestant countries, because they wanted to prove as a new religion to be extra christian and catholics baned it some times right at the beginning.

On the normal, Christian Sabbath, you drink the blood of Christ and eat the body of Christ (at least in the denominations that believe in transmutation), from chalices and platters. I also believe those chalices are symbolic of the receptacle of the blood from the Jesus's spear wound when he was dying on the cross. I could be the wrong, because I'm not an expert. Anyway, if you believe the devil is everything that opposes God, it stands to reason that at the black Sabbath you would drink the devil's blood, and that it would appear black and foul tasting. If you believe in all that, it all sounds pretty logical to me.

I beg to differ. Dogs are by far the most dangerous animals on the planet! Dogs kill more human beings than any other animal. Dogs kill more people than snakes, hippos, crocodiles and jelly fish *put together!* Also, sharks and spiders are completely harmless, they very very rarely cause any person's death.
@ivyrose779
@ivyrose779 22 күн бұрын
That’s not true. You can’t just compare the number of deaths they’ve caused. If there were as many of those other animals and they interacted with people as often as dogs, they would likely kill more. Not all of them but most. I don’t think anyone can argue that, in a head to head comparison, a dog is more dangerous than a hippo.
