I think one thing that's not being taken into accountability is survivability as well. Someone like Ana doesn't have a hard gameplan. But Landing sleep darts and having good positioning so you don't get dived can be difficult

Not only does she require aim to heal her teammates but from the beginners I played with, I even believe that they think Ana can only heal her teammates with her grenade. As for Kiriko, her healing just travels to the teammate as long as they’re in sight, plus her ult is more game changing for beginners since it’s a whole team benefiting off of it while Ana may just nano a Torb just because he looks like a dangerous hero to play against.

This is a very good list. My only thought is that I've had trouble teaching long-time players Sigma, so I think he would probably be hard for most newbies. His shots move very slow, so aiming is tough. And while his shield is just a button, you have to adjust how far it goes and remember to pull it down or it doesn't offer much help. The rock is also slow and with an strange arc. And his ultimate is pretty easy to screw up, either by failing to anticipate player movement or failing to account for hacks/hooks/other stuns.

I'm a new player, and it was a bit odd to use Sigma at first but after a game or two I got used to his kit. Still not good at using his ult but I'm not good at using ults for any character. Usually I just waste them or get 1 kill. Any tips for ults?

@@yeahso8225 hmmmm.. whenever i use sigma, i like to launch my shield into the air and use the ult. I use the shield to block burst damage, and sleep darts, javelins, hooks, all that stuff. it usually pays off. its definitely a great thing to target supports with it, but if you can get more, definitely go for it. If a zen prematurely uses transcendence, wait it out, you can still do damage. Remember, if a zen isnt caught in the flux, he can still heal his team. You can combo dragonstrike and gravitic flux for confirmed kills (unless they have a bap, just watch his immortality field). you may already know these😅 just letting you know the things i think about when i flux:)

I’d personally put Sigma in hard, he’s actually very difficult for new players I’ve noticed. The thing is, new Sigma players often forget about his shield and don’t utilize it enough, so they end up dying and getting no value.

i think beginners suck at sigma, but hes still somewhat effective. even if you forget about your shield and you only have it half the time that you need it as a result, the fact that he also has suck and rock makes him still pretty effective in low play. obviously this isnt sustainable and theyll end up hardstuck if they dont learn how to use their shield, but while theyre playing with and against noobs, its not too bad.

Yeah, I think positioning and decision making with someone like ana is more important often than mechanical skill, no level of aim can save you from dying in most situations if you are in the wrong place, and cant get value if you’re dead. I agree she and other characters should be higher

I agree but you can actually use this to your advantage whenever I'm playing support I'm going Ana only, so nowadays I'm pretty confident with her shooting and hitting abilities so whenever I'm playing duos with my friend and he is a tank, I'm going and bait some enemies for easy team kills whenever I go frontline, I try to keep track off all enemies CD's and then I'm going in a super risky position when I know most CD's are down people will still try to get to you, and most of the time it's not only one person that's when you can initiate a team fight to your advantage without the fight even starting and everyone knows how quick Ana can turn tables in teamfights, so you also have a backup if something goes wrong coordinate this together with your tank and you can get easy as fuck team kills for a smooth push

The ult for Echo is really what makes her difficult until you learn everyone. Her cooldowns are pretty impactful and you can easily assassinate tanks. Everything but ult is pretty easy to understand, but master, i wouldn't know yet.

I think a case can be made to put brig up a difficulty tier at least. Brig is pretty counter intuitive. She's a melee hero that really doesnt want to close, but wants to play against things that need to. Which is in no way apparent to new players, because her affordances give the impression that shes a frontline brawler and should be in the thick of things. And when their gameplay is already prone to various inconsistencies from lack of experience, they're not likely to understand why they die when they went too deep on the front when they get frequent reinforcement from other new players struggling to kill her there. I've seen a lot of new players gravitate to her because she looks simple, but just die repeatedly from inting and then swap because they see their healing numbers are really low.

Ya i play with a friend that is new new to OW and I’m trying to help him out. He goes Brig and feels the need to frontline even when the other team has a junkrat. No concept of what counters them as well as what their actual role is. I tell him no you don’t want to be up front but then he goes “well then I’m not doing anything and feel useless”. It’s so hard to explain when to be aggressive and when to let the team fight come to you

A lot of how hard heroes are has to do with how easy it is to hit them. Brig makes herself SUPER easy to hit, especially if you're bad at her shield. By contrast Pharah isn't that hard due to this -- bronze dps have a very hard time killing her especially with a Mercy, they hardly even know to look up. So I agree, Brig has a bit of a knowledge threshold to overcome before you can play her effectively.

Kiriko is considerably easier then ana and baptiste. One thing i think you forgot to take into account with healers is positioning and escapes. With kiriko you can always warp back to your team if your getting dived or out of position, and its much much easier to get farmed by enemy flankers if you are playing ana for example.

Honestly I think Kiriko is as easy to get value out of as like Mercy or Moira. Your healing tracks targets and AOE on cleanse is huge and easy to get the hang of. Her ult is much easier than Valk or Coalescence

Brig should go into medium or hard I think. I find that my beginner friends don't tend to have the patience or positioning and end up just playing her like Rein and dying.

I agree, and was going to post something similar. Brig requires an awful lot of positioning to play well due to being a melee-only hero. Yes, throwing healing pack from the back line is easy, but that's Mercy's job. On the other hand, if you charge Brig into battle thinking your shield will save you like Rein, you'll end up dead more often than not. At best, Brig should be Medium, if not Hard tier.

Yeah brig requires a lot of game sense even more than any hero. Positioning when to boop when to use ult when to use the health packages and the most important part: when to use bash and go straight to a fight (evaluate if it's worth the risk ) People say she is easy but oh god are we in the same game? Every time someone pick her they die ALL THE TIME. Maybe it's easy for a GM that already has a lot of game sense. But for the average players? Brig is medium-hard honestly.

Something I've learned with Baptiste is, if you simply hold down both his primary and secondary fires simultaneously (left & right mouse buttons for me), by default he will automatically do his "shoot shoot heal" strat.

For me, both Baptist and Ana are harder to play and heal especially than Kiriko. With Ana it's all about aim, her healing darts and sleeping dart. I think it's the hardest heal to play.

As a new player id flip Pharah and Widow. It alot easier to hold space and spam into the general direction of the enemy than trying to actually get kills as widow and not get farmed by reaper or genji or any player that is better than you. Also I feel like down here at the bottom nobody really looks up.

I agree. I started with Pharah because I love her character but she is easy to pick up. A bad Pharah gets way more value than a bad Widow. Rockets are way more forgiving. Even a ground Pharah gets more value than a Widow who can’t hit her shots.

Yeah, Widow is as much positioning dependent as she is aim dependent. You'll just feed your brains out if you don't have both, regardless of how decent your aim is prior to starting OW.

I played post-rework torb a lot in overwatch 1 and with all the new players in 2 he's a dream. Throw the turret somewhere where the other team won't see it until the team fight starts, lob primary fires into their team before engaging, and just overload and rush them to get an easy pick or two. New players have no clue what to do, im effectively a second tank. I love it.

Calling Widow point and click severely downplays how hard she is compared to a lot of other heros. Compare her to Ashe (who's in the same tier), who has Dynamite to help make up for the amount of shots that a "beginner" will miss which builds BOB. Widow is very feast or famine. If they're a brand new player they probably aren't going to be able to land thier shots and Widow doesn't have anything in her kit to make up for beginner aim. Her ult doesn't get any immediate value unlike something like BOB. I think her placement was the only one I really disagreed with specifically because you said "depends on how much fps experience they have" and the list is for beginner difficulty.

Generally like this list! Agree with others saying escapes are worth factoring in for supports - might even push Mercy to easy as it can be a little intimidating trying to defend yourself if your team aren't looking out for you (which, at an entry level, they often aren't). I'd also make a case for Pharah in easy - at a low level, you can play mostly ground Pharah the same way you might for low level Lucio, and get lots of value off her generous splash damage and bursty ult.

I would say Ana would be at least a hard tier. I remember trying to main her when I first started Overwatch and she was frustrating to use. Her sleep dart is very hard to land and has a casting time. Also, although nanos are easy to land, they need to charge up. This requires a lot of aim. Her nade is probably one of the more easy abilities to use. However, it does have a smaller radius than you’d think.

To be fair, huge part of value for beginners is *survivability* - you cant get value at while you are dead. Kiriko is kind of easy hero, because you can play her like Mercy, but she have better ultimate, skill and survivability. Monkey is very ez for beginners too - you do jump on enemies, place barrier, hold attack button for aoe dmg and after barrier is down, jump back for heal, then repeat. Zen and Brig are for beginners nightmares, best choice is Lucio rather than pick them. Ana is very hard in my opinion and you need play the game while for map knowledge and you need to know value of your abilities and when use them in right time.

@@Htiy Genji would be really high tier in skill ceiling. It's not hard getting value with him currently, but his value and effort he puts can be greatly optimized. It's impressive watching people like Necros who have pushed the normal limits of playing Genji and developed some kinda robotic fast playstyle. Not every Genji player will play with such playstyle. And as I am familiar with that playstyle I know it takes thousands of hours to get consistent with it.

I'd argue Reinhardt is a solid "Hard" tier. To play Rein "properly" you need a lot of game sense, awareness and communication. The way he's played to be put on "Easy" is by no means a good way to play Rein at all. One of the hardest tanks to use in my book. Also Sombra at "very hard"? xD

As an actual new player (with prior FPS experience though), I disagree with some. Rein and Brig: Hard. Being melee makes these heroes hard, because when to go in, when to pull out is hard to determine. Often you go in and immediately die. Zen: Hard or very hard. One of the toughest supports, just because he is so squishy. Needs crazy good game sense to survive. As a first time player on Zen, I just kept dying and dying, generating 0 value. Dva: Very easy. One of the most intuitive tanks to pick up and play. Her shift ability lets you get out of trouble meaning it's very forgiving to play her. And her Ult is very easy to hit on lower ranks because people panic and run away instead of hiding behind cover. Roadhog: Medium. He is OP now so he seems easy, but chain and shotgun take a bit of practice. A first time player will be trash on hog for a few games. Sojourn: Very easy. Just a very straightforward DPS with an assault rifle. And the slide to escape makes her forgiving to play. Pharah: Easy. It's easy to figure out you are supposed to hit shift, fly up and then spam rockets. The high blast radius makes it very forgiving. Other than that... I'd put Soldier, Junkrat, Lucio, Bastion on Very Easy since a first time player can just pick it and do well on their first game. You underestimate how much Bastion minigun shreds at low ranks because no one expects it or plays around it lol. And Lucio doesn't even need to click any mouse buttons to heal his teammates and be useful lol. Ana is harder than other precise heroes like Ashe and Widow, just because she is squishy and needs to hit those difficult sleep darts to survive. Baptiste is pretty easy and straightforward, left click kills, right click heals. Hanzo is easier than Genji since his arrow is just so spammable and you'll get random headshots.

I think Bap can even be moved to easy. You got the aoe heal + insta heal no aim shift heal . Lots of value and he has his boots for a sort of escape and get to safer high ground. His gun is hitscan too which is easier to land if you've ever played fps game vs. zen and lucio's weapons.

Not gonna lie, the first character I ever picked to play was Pharah & I played her pretty much exclusively for a long time. (OW was my first pc fps game so I was new to the game & using a mouse and keyboard.) I think I had a harder time adjusting to playing the ground bound characters early on when I started to explore other picks.

I think Lucio belongs in very easy. I think he’s the lowest skill-floor hero in the game. Every other support has to have some idea of where teammates are to get healing value, but Lucio doesn’t. He also has very good survivability in noob lobbies because he can just sort of hop around on the point and occasionally bounce off of a wall and actively heal himself and no one can kill him. Everyone in low-skill lobbies just beelines to the point anyway, so Lucio just goes there and exists with healing on and his teammates will find him. Source: this is how I climbed out of Bronze in Season 5. Mercy’s skill floor is low too, but I think it actually takes more skill to achieve basic survivability as Mercy, compared to Lucio. By default, her GA takes you all the way to your ally, which then puts you in a position where you can’t actually fly off of them again, and when your positioning and awareness is poor, your other movement options are often nonexistent. Oh, and Rez is without doubt the biggest noob-trap ability in the game. Beginner Mercy players spend a lot of time in the spawn room because they missed healing on someone and let them die and then tried to fix it by rezzing and died themselves. Edit: I think Lucio is easier to get baseline value with than Moira too. Sure, her heal spray is very forgiving, but it’s also limited and still doesn’t give great feedback about whether it’s actually landing. New Moira players run out of heal spray very quickly and then are totally useless, and heal orbs are very very easy to waste. If you go full-DPS Moira, that’s probably easier to get started with though.

Personally I'd put Junkrat and Reaper in very easy and Sym in easy instead (Maybe raise hog to easy cuz they need to know the combo), but otherwise I agree with pretty much everything. Hog doesn't need to know the combo because pulling in opponents with a free half hp heal is enough. They don't die, are self sustaining, and can separate backrow from tanks or tanks from backrow to setup a team kill. It's not even that complicated to do either, just hook someone.

Ya I definitely don’t agree with it. She is so forgiving right now especially with that 40% damage boost to hacked targets. And she can hack while invisible. I get where he is coming from but new players don’t really need to worry about coordinating with teammates. She is not easy but definitely not the hardest tier IF simply talking skill floor for a new player. Someone with a FPS background can learn to assassinate with her no problem and that’s plenty value early on.

Best characters for new players, reaper, mercy, dva (when I started in like season 4 this was my go to hero you can fly around and her ultimate is super fun in lower level matches you can not even use her matrix and get by (I didn't use it correctly for so long haha) Reaper might be the easiest character in the game most people know intrinsically or from other games that shotguns are close range and he has an oh crap ability with his wraith mode allowing him to get out of had stops and beginners can just use his teleport to gain ground when coming from spawn Mercy is the go to character for anyone to learn the basics of a support class player you don't have to aim and all the info your UI gives like allies health and the exact health of who your healing or buffing you will learn quickly that you need to be behind your allies when healing, to keep an eye on everyone and to juggle when to heal and when to buff which will help you for more complicated characters and all the things you must think about There's alot of weird choices here imo

Yeh, that's kind of the issue with her because the majority of her kit seems to scream at you to get into a brawl in the frontline to keep your passive going and make use of your melee weapon and short ranged attacks, but she's not really robust enough to actually be in the front constantly.

I think Mercy needs to be brought up to regular Easy because her mobility and survivability needs to be taken into account when it comes to new players. Staying alive for as long as possible, and then being able to get back into the fight as fast as possible once you die is so important for a Mercy to learn.

Ashe is def more difficult than medium. She doesn't really have too much bail potential from flanks, landing high value dynamites are actually hard and require good timing and aim, and landing headshot after headshot is just not beginner friendly. She's at least in hard or possibly in very hard. If you don't have an fps background, you're just gonna be useless on her. I would argue that at the absolute skill floor level Sigma is actually easy instead of medium, because even if you can't aim well, you can still do damage with the hyperspheres' splash damage. There's a lot of nuance to utilizing his shield and kinetic grasp effectively, but even if you have no clue how to use it, they're both still great for protecting yourself from flankers and bad positioning.

as someone who used to play ow1 ages ago as a jr main, i honestly feel like soldier should be a tier below jr. it's only easy to spam a choke when you know where the chokes are and have a team that actually plays together (from playing a fresh account on ow2 after losing access to my original, this is very much not the case for new players) when I'm not feeling like i can get any value out of jr coz I'm missing shots too much, i just switch to soldier and immediately can be just as and generally more useful in almost all cases

Brig and Lucio are medium-hard. Brig requires shield management (more than rein since you get involved in solo fights more often and you are not as strong as rein), when to go straight to a fight and use bash (even ML7 said he feed a lot with Brigitte he died a lot, is hard to know when to push with her and when to stay behind) and when to boop (don't help/save the enemy please...) and and when to use rally and when to use health packages (spoiler: not for the tanks, most of the time at least). Compared all this to mei or junkrat? No way she is easy. She was easy when she was broken and people still think she is. But she is a Melee character with 200hp. Just saying. With Lucio is easy to heal that's it, that's the only easy part of his kit, he needs a lot of mechanics ... lots of heals every 12 sec (amplification) won't be valuable at all. You'll lose every game. It's hard to win if you are just standing there healing at low speed.

This is a great list if you are taking beginner friendliness quite literally. The list would substantially change if you consider character maximizing and exponential skill gap. Maining certain characters early on is nice until you need to climb past certain ranks. Then you hit an absolute brickwall. For example most characters stay consistent from bronze to diamond, but the skill gap with zen/ana between gold/plat and diamond/master is nearly astronomical. You have to be a dps god with zen, and landing crucial sleeps with nade management is the hardest skill to learn in the game.

I wouldn't put brig on easy. Most low level brigs just feed on cooldown. Takes some gamesense to survive on that hero. I also wouldn't put Roadhog on very easy, just regular easy. Actually new players don't know you're supposed to combo one-shot with your hook.

Honestly I'd argue that any hero that requires gamesense over mechanical skill is going to be much more difficult. As people like Dr Disrespect proved way back when, even people with huge amounts of fps experience and mechanics still struggle a lot in OW because they just don't have gamesense. So while Brig might be mechanically easier, I'd argue she's actually much more difficult to get decent value from because she's such a gamesense heavy hero. Whereas Zen is super easy to understand because you just throw your orbs onto your team/enemies and then spam your damage orbs.

i'm a support main so i'm legally obligated to put my thoughts lol. i'm viewing this tierlist as a "how hard it is to survive and get value out of each character ?" tier list btw also before i start, i think dva should be in hard :D ana: def not in medium, i would put her in hard. positioning matters for her a lot as she doesn't have movement abilities, so its very easy for her to die. her sleep darts are so slippery and it's hard to get any value out of them on characters other than tanks unless you have good aim. in OW2 though, getting value out of her anti is easier compared to OW1 ( due to barely any shields ). unfortunately though kiriko exists so if you have an enemy kiriko, a lot of anti nade value is kicked out the window. just like every other support ult, timing especially matters for her nano. it's either a hit or miss with it. baptiste: not in medium again, i would put him in easy. it's easy to survive and get value out of all his abilities. you can perfect your usage of his abilities, sure, but compared to ana it's easier to get value out of the abilities brig: she'd go in medium in my opinion. it's very easy to die as brig, good timing and game sense for her really matters and if you have neither then you get no value out of her. kiriko: she has a very high skill ceiling, but i don't think it's that hard to simply play her and get value. i would put her in medium as you need good game sense and decent aim to survive and get value. lucio: i agree with lucio's placement! he has a very high skill ceiling but to just get value and survive as him, all you need is decent movement. mercy: this is going to be an unpopular opinion but in OW2, there's of course way less shields and there was 6v6. now there's no shields for your mercy to just stand behind and people will be targeting her even more due to 5v5. i would put her in easy or low medium. you need to have good game sense, good timing and good positioning to get value out of her without immediately dying. auto super-jump has been much help though. moira: agree lol, she is very beginner friendly. zen: i agree with high easy, or maybe low medium, but there's a catch. once again, like ana, he has no movement abilities and it's very easy to die as him. he is one of the characters with a large damage output though so as long as none of the enemy team actively dives you and tries to counter you, you can get a lot of value from staying in the backline and dishing out damage. you do need to have good positioning though as him so you can be in an area where you can deal damage without immediately dying my opinions probably have a lot of contradictions but yea . thats my thoughts on the support placements . feel free to share if you agree or disagree !

The thing is if you're new, every hero will be hard to survive and get value out of I think LOL. I think going with how straightforward the kits are is the right way to look at it. But at the end of the day I think newbies should go for who they think is fun to play, learn how difficult or easy the hero might be, and just run with it. That's how I became a filthy widow OTP in my prime. :P

My main is Brig, but aside from her I play Junker Queen and Sigma on tank, Echo on DPS, and Kiriko and Baptiste on support. Almost all of my heroes are in Medium, with one Hard and one Very Hard.

16:10 it's actually pretty difficult to play zenyatta. Harmony has to be passed around which takes meticulous attention to detail on everyone's condition and you need Los. Discord is pretty easy but only if either you can hit shots or you can tell who on the enemy team is being shot at. Otherwise it's useless. The orbs deal large amounts of damage (especially when boosted by discord) but they require immense skill and proper timing to deal meaningful burst damage against characters like tracer or reaper. Also, zenyatta is extremely vulnerable to getting picked off from speedy characters or snipers, making positioning and knowing how to handle enemies on your own key.

Genji is very hard for new players imo, not because of the skill floor, but because of how much "heat" he gets to himself, he gets his own sensitivity, when to right click or left click, map knowledge for climbing walls, health pack knowledge, when to poke and when to brawl, when to dash in without feeding, and on top of all that he's a hot character, whenever a genj8l is around he gets shot more than anyone on the team that's because of how dangerous he might be, and we didn't talk about blade you he's hardest kit yet, the moment you pop blade it's a 1v5 everyone is gonna ignore thier team and look at you, zen is gonna ult, Lucio? Already in sound barrier, they are ready for you trying to stop you even tho it's really hard to kill with blade due to how short it is and a 200 character will need 2 swings to die if he didn't receive any aid which is not how ow works, so yeah i think genji is one of the hardest. @@thecombozdude1073 if your new to genji try him on Dimond or masters , hell try him in plat, you will get demolished, every shot counts , one wrong jump is death, fail to confirm kills and your screwed, sombra and zarya will literally leave the whole game and focus you, cuz normally, genji in those lobby are dangerous, cracked with skill so in order to win we have to disable genji, which brings me back to the same point of genji getting more heat than others, of course in silver and and gold is meh he's allowed to make mistakes, but the higher you go the more skill curve on him is insanely high, unlike sombra that can just go poof, and reaper that can just go poof and tracer that can just go boof, if a genji can't play his cards well he's a dead boi.

I started playing in November and I feel like Kiriko was much easier to get base value from than Baptiste. I personally also feel like Phara and Echo are not as difficult to get some value out of in the first games because a lot of times you just dont get shot while you are in the air and if you go to practise range for 5 minutes and try out air movement before the game, its usable already. Maybe thats just me tho because my aim is not so good and therefore i didnt go for the hitscan heroes first One thing i saw a lot in the comments and totally agree with is also brig needs to be at medium AT LEAST. In the beginning playing brig was just constantly dying for me because i didnt know when to engage and when to stay back.

I would move anna and sigma up a rank and Ash down a rank. Anna has very long cooldown and no mobility so a noob will generally get dived over and over again, noob don't know how to position safely to get value, and don't know how to use her cool-downs which is a very important part of her kit. Sigma has good survivability and you don't have to manage cool-downs, but his primary fire is very hard to aim and his shield hard to use, you have to remember to pull it back, know where to place it ... I think he is a hard hero. Ash just need to shoot to get decent value and her shots are very not that hard to land, even for noob. The high cadence of unscope is very forgiving and scope is intuitive enough. Like sure you need to know how to aim but unlike a widow, she doesn't punish you for not aiming properly. Her dynamite is harder to use but not necessary to her gameplay at low level, you just throw it somewhere, hope it touches someone, and then go back to shooting. Maybe cassidy is also pretty easy but I am less sure about that due to him having a lower fire rate, making bad aim less forgiving.
