The balance from these days has a lot of issues, but seeing all of the changes over the years, especially when framed as "look how much worse this character used to be", really shows the over abundance of power creep in the games current design. All these limitations and commitments you had to make in the classic version of Overwatch lends itself to an easier to balance game with clearer readability of danger when you'd see enemies commit to a move. You'd know if Rein was out of the fight for a bit if he missed a charge, or when Genji's deflect period would end, or reapers shadow step would. Pharah and Junkrat and Mercy weren't nearly as mobile making you really choose when to use your limited bursts of movement. In the coming years they reallly did away with a lot of limitations across the board, which I'm sure some people prefer, but it makes sense to me why balancing is such a nightmare right now, I feel like the power creep got way out of hand.

I agree, mobility creep, ease of use creep, and changing core parts of the game like cc and fall off to be too forgiving or too unforgiving were horrible mistakes, imo ow 1 in its release state is more fun than ow2 has been in a while, and its not even nostalgia like people keep saying its just that ow 2 truly is a bad game. I'd rather fight 6 torbs with level three turrets with 5 Winstons and a mercy, then spend another second in trashwatch2

I never played Ow1, so I have no nostalgia toward it. I've been enjoying the classic game mode. It feels nice that things actually die without massive health pools, AoE and burst healing and Support immortality cooldowns. The main thing that's missing from the mode is hero lock so players can't spam the same oppressive hero and also some QoL changes for some heroes so they feel better to play like Lucio and Dva.

My favorite part is how the original characters retained all of their stats almost in the open queue format of ow2, which means everyone else scaling, means tanks didn't. I gotta admit, tanks only having 25% increased HP, but with armor changes and damage falloff, makes a big difference.

One thing that wasn’t mentioned but that gives me so many good memories and feelings, was that Widow scope animation isn’t locked when scoping in and out. I swear, it makes the character feels amazing, it was sooo much smoother compared to the modern version, and made very skilled widow able to play even on the payload instead of the back of the map, because you could unscope for a split second, jump, and scope back in, that is sooooo underrated as a mechanic, I would take any other change they gave her to have this scope animation back, like reduce the OHK range even further, remove the venom mine wall hack, even give her 175hp but please give us back that old scope animation, it made the character so much more interactive, with less hp and shorter range it would be much more of a “high risk high reward” type of play style, instead of a laid back clicking heads annoying one. I know that snipers are supposed to be playing at further ranges but this is overwatch come on.

I also had a few clutch games with her where I put the TP down on the payload/point right before dying after enemy used their ults, allowing my team to immediately turn the fight, esp with Mercy's res ready

Ideal changes after looking back to 1.0 would be Bastion's Assault form regains the 200 ammo and infinite duration but does not regain the crit damage (possibly even reverting the damage because mobile) more importantly though is reverting his ultimate to Tank form, maybe drop the bonus armor. Torb turret should get the rockets back during overload, even if less damage/slower fire rate. Give Reaper souls back (maybe just reducing the lifesteal to compensate, now being part of the weapon function) and remove Mei's beam pierce for hinder at least.

You missed one thing. Reaper used to do 140 damage per shot if all pellets hit. Noe its much less. I think 100 now

There are fun little things in Overwatch Classic that aren't mentioned while there are little things in the current Overwatch that are mentioned which makes me feel like karq is a little biased No one asked for the first version of the game but we wanted Overwatch 1 at its peek with the old abilities that we missed, I feel like it's an attempt to convince players that Overwatch 1 was always like this while in less than half a year since the game was released the balance between the characters has been greatly improved

They first thing I noticed different was, movement didnt feel the same and sound effect I cant tell where people are, sounds like everyone is either far away or on top of me.

Every other character makes sense, but I don't see why Mei drops a soup when reaper kills her no way she has one.

The older a game is, the better skilled its player base on average will be. And game devs have to compensate for it. I've seen the same happen to DBD. Lots of gimmicky or unfair-feeling abilities (Mercy rez, widow insta-tap, etc.) and strats (goats) are no longer available to encourage constant engagement. This feels like looking at a rough draft of a paper I wrote. It has charm and the inspiration is there, but it makes you appreciate all the tweaks and feedback it took to get where modern OW is.

Also torbjorn didn’t have 200 hp 50 armor he only had 200 hp. And there’s also a bug when torb is resurrected he doesn’t get his 50 armor back returning him to the correct hp pool

so thats why widowmaker feels so painful now, like i know she can yeet 1/2 of a tank's hp back then but i dont remember it being THAT painful, like i recall playing torb mostly just because the additional armor wont let me get 1-shotted, but for some reason i can get 1-shotted now even with the armor no wonder all these sweaty tryhards are all popping off as widow

I'm still disappointed that they changed Bastion's ult probably for the sake of keeping one of his abilities static. The tank mode is more fun and has more skill expression that the artillery ult.

Hey KarQ! I found your videos almost 2 months ago and it helped me learn how to play Overwatch a lot! Could you make an updated video on Counters or Playstyles (Brawl Dive Poke?) thats one thing im really struggling with, finding good options for the situation but I cant find an updated recommendation for what heros to play in what situation (i.e counter new doomfist & winston OR widow post sombra nerf). I been loving bastion, just for Tank mode ult. I used to rocket jump all the time in ow1 and fall in love with it again. I hope they bring it back as his ult. His ult in the current state with Mortar is just terrible and less fun and interesting. Tank form was way more fun to use, rocket jumping on places easily for verticality and it took a lot of skill to hit the tank shells. It felt balanced and useful at the same time, even if old bastion was terrible.

idk you can call me weird but i liked simplicity, like im enjoying playing mercy much more than in ow2 because of limitations, i have more time to think and skill ceiling is reduced so almost no matter what I do mechanically it will be difficult for me to screw up and this gives some strange feeling of peace
