To add to the shotcalling conversation - a) being in voice leaves you open to receive negative comments, toxicity and people venting their frustration, which personally throws me off and distracts me from actually focusing on the game and I'm sure a lot of people feel this way too. b) you start playing less like you think you should play based on your own experience and on what you've learned through study and start playing like the people in voice expect you to play, and the latter isn't necessarily the better one

Adding to the shotcalling convo - There are many instances where it can be seen as wasted effort, either because teammates ignore the calls or become toxic, or they simply aren't in voice chat to begin with. I think a large part of why people don't say much, if anything, in voice chat, is because of the toxicity that's become so prevalent in the community, and people want to avoid that altogether - which is why the ping system is so great, as it allows for people to provide useful information without subjecting themselves to the toxicity of other players.

exactly and unless you are in high ranks, i think too many people just ignore pings and other commands. probably because there is so much audio & visual clutter happening, so i think voice comms are probably even more important the lower in rank you go (if they are even in vc). i had a game where i was retreating alone as mercy and ball came up behind me. i was running toward my sigma spamming group up but he was just walking around a pillar away from me. i watched the replay and i guess he wanted to grab the health pack before helping their healer thats directly in their view saying group up 10 times

actually its pretty hard to break a reins shield as Mauga. If your team doesnt focus Rein he will just pin everywhere and get easy kills. Ive lost to a rein on control for that reason. His shield blocks his damage so he cant heal himself. Not having any cc to stop his pin also helps rein. also free shatters.

@AlexisWenberg Mauga melts rein. Period, end of story. His DPS significantly outweighs reins shield. Rein also has no inherent sustain. If you want to argue his shield is his sustain I'm here for it, but he can't heal himself or do much mitigation. If you're using your shield like this, you're playing rein wrong and will get punished for it heavily. Use shield for rotations, to block major cooldowns, and to walk up to swing. Against mauga, you lose the trade. You shouldn't be swinging into mauga unless he's massively overextended. The only thing rein is good for is shielding his team while they try to melt mauga.

@AlexisWenberg Yeah, the problem in higher elos is that you just play your range against rein better - so he's a literal nonfactor in the game above like gold. There's a few specialists that roll around (myself included) but rein's in a sad state when bap poke comps just melt him like there's no tomorrow. Personally think the game should just be a rein/winston/sigma rotation. The Mauga nerfs did help the rein matchup a bit but he still just melts tanks. You really want to counter him just go sig or dva - it's more effective and you have more tools to carry than on rein.

@AlexisWenberg There comes a point where you just sit there doing nothing while mauga's taking space though, which is not ideal and disregards the fundamentals of tank IMO. Lucio can help you with your mobility sure, the problem is you lose a lot of the healing output that will sustain you against the mauga. Plus, his cardiac overdrive turns you into a healing station for the enemy team - not just him. I personally have found that in diamond+ mobility destroys mauga. You need to play fast and delete his backline with coordination. Mauga's ult locks doom out, but it's really easy to play around since how mobile you are. Zarya has some potential since his nerfs - but I still am not a fan of the matchup, and I play a lot of Zarya nowadays and coach it. I personally think that Sig/Dva are your best picks into him by a mile, but if you couldn't play either of those heroes, monkey doom or wrecking ball will work well if you have the mechanics for it. If you're just plain bad at the game and struggling against mauga, then perhaps something that's simpler to understand like Rein or Orisa would work pretty well too, provided you AFK'd around corners for the majority of the match. The problem comes down to play style - if you're focusing the tank then you're gonna have a bad time.

I had 1 game today in diamond EU lobbies with shotcalling on tank. I was calling targets, where I was going, etc. My genji was humming mario songs and my Ana had a potato mic and only told me when she was reloading. None of them followed me either.

in the nicest way possible, if nobody on the team wants to listen or respond its likely your callouts arent as good as you think they are. when i get a good shot caller in my game i always appreciate it and endorse them and it seems like my teammates always do too, but then there are some that are overly bossy, too loud or not loud enough, or too distracting because they comm too many useless or obvious things. not even saying you necessarily do any of those things but theres a very fine line between a great shot caller and one that everyone ignores.

On the shot calling thing, I think 1) a lot of players are just NOT receptive to ANY team work (at least in the US servers.) They just do not like even the slightest whiff of someone "telling them what to do" (even when you aren't telling them what to do, just throwing out suggestions.) 2) informational call outs feel like too much "noise" to those who aren't playing to win necessarily. While it's frustrating for people who DO want to play with others as a team, some people just want to do their own thing and don't care about call outs or winning. They just want to solo pop off.

About getting picks with Winston, it's important to mention his "dive combo". When diving someone, always charge right click while in the air and as you land on them hit them with the right click and melee for a 130 burst damage (50 alt fire+50 jump+30 melee). Be sure to land ON your target. And practice turning around as you jump so enemies don't shoot your big fat head while you're in the air 😁

If you right click before you jump and zap on the way down, you'll do more damage because the right click stops you from firing the primary for longer now that it did at the beginning of OW2.

@@kommandantkillcode well, yes, but that's not burst damage anymore. Now you're in the realm of "depends on the situation". That pre-fire can be healed or cause the target to flee before you land. But of course, Winston should poke from a distance even before engaging.

i also heard somebody say that it can make you focus on the wrong things during a game and i agree - when its your goal to improve it can be counter productive to use shotcalling because especially in lower ranks it can help kinda brute force fight wins that are not based on skill but on coordination if you get used to winning like that it cqan be harder to improve your own skills and game sense

The best way to deal w flanks is to expect it before it happens. ESPECIALLY SOMBRA. You may take cover, (try) to get help from your team, make wacky movements to throw off her shots. Other than expecting it, DO NOT PANIC. And never forget you CAN kill them, so no reason to be scared. Try to outplay them so they don’t outplay you

The thing with shotcalling in lower ranks is that it either leads to getting ignored, it's being used wrong (DPS only calls out when it's their kill being low, doesn't really care about anyone else), or it leads to toxicity. It's not useless, but it's more of a fruitless endeavour. People in online gaming have a real hate-boner toward being told what to do by other people.

I've suggested that health regen should activate after 2 seconds of both not taking/dealing damage. Balances lamp in 1v and moira with lifesteal. I'm sure dps/tank will be after 3 seconds of not dealing damage.

@@Memo-yh4nc Actually I call enemy ults every fight, plan ult combos, make a strategy at the beginning, focus targets, form a cohesive comp with at least 1 main healer. Very simple things for ow 1 master and gm players lol I've finished top 5 multiple times in ow 1 and 2. I think the ego you're referring to is experience. You should take what higher rank players say to heart cause it'll actually help you climb. Ow 1 players were hardcore fans, we watched every world cup, we wacthed owl league and everyone knew every pros name. We know pro strats, meta comps, we studied the game in every way cause we loved it. None of you would dare say you love ow 2 and you know it lol Dont be a baby and leave chat cause we're trying to help you win the game. Go play deathmatch if you dont want to work together as a team and learn from experienced players when we call out your mistakes. regarding shotcalling, its not the same game but yesterday i was playing siege and i was last alive in a 1v1. my teammate told me "hes behind that counter" and i sneak up and check and... no ones there, before i can react i get shot in the back and lose the round. my teammate got mad at his horrendous callout and told him to "let him have his own thoughts" referring to me and thats when i realized most of the time youre better off keeping your mouth shut and letting your teammates play instead of talking about things you know nothing about.

Edit: nvm I see similar question in vid :) Q: Hey KarQ, I have a question for the question series episode. Is it possible that I almost always get better opponents compared to my team (including me)? I'm in gold and often in comp games the opposing team has Mercy, I often feel like I'm the only one focusing on killing her, but I can't do it as a support. And when I switch to Mercy in the same match, suddenly 4 people are chasing me just to kill me. I noticed that this is very common in my matches, then these games are lost from the start. I even saw Mercy resurrecting across from my dps more than once in different matches 😭 Idk what I can do better in situations like that

Its fine to have opinions on all roles getting the support passive but we really can’t fully judge until its in the game and/or the numbers are revealed. Another reason i think blizzard should have public test builds like dead by daylight does to test changes before they hit the live release

Roll or get rolled - I'm silver support, gold dps. A staggering amount of games are like this. At least 70%. So frustrating even when on the winning side b/c it takes the fun out of the game

even though my reaction time is decent, its really annoying that my abilies- more often my Q- does not register immediately and i have to spam the button. im not sure why this happens, if there is a conflict between my movement keys or if its the angle that im hitting the key or just the game itself / my computer not being able to keep up?. because aside from this, the key works perfectly fine. does this happen to anyone else?

I hate it when people lie about someone being "one hp". I only use this call when an enemy only has 1 bar of health left, which means he is going to die from practically any tiny bit of damage - melee, 1 shuriken bodyshot, half second of moira sucking, etc. When this is not the case, I say "he is low" or "he is half". But my teammates in ranked often scream "lucio one! lucio one!" when in reality he is literally above half health. I trust them and dash into lucio expecting to kill him, get dash reset and come back to my team really fast, but actually its me who is getting killed for improper engagement.

For the high ground thing, I had a Control game a couple weeks ago where there was a soldier on high ground just poking me and the other support literally the entire first map. We won that map but I told my team that they were doing great but we coild be doing even better if we do something about the soldier on high ground and my bastion instantly started throwing because they took it as me telling them that I said everybody was trash. I feel like that person might be avoiding that situation

You don't need shotcalling. Heroes have better voice lines in game that are automatic. Like how Ana automatically says "behind you" as you fall to the ground from a Sombra flank. Or how Zenyatta sounds like he's in a Saw movie when a tracer pellet touches his toes 40 meters away.

I peak masters but regularly play in plat/diamond. 90% of the time, VC is just toxic, tilts me, and I get suspended for responding to the toxicity. Not only this, having been on a team and scrimmed, sat with high level coaches (top OD) and been instructed on how to REALLY play the game, as well as getting into coaching myself - it's pointless to be comming below high GM. People are going to do/play whatever they want, not run optimal compositions, not listen to your callouts, half of them will just tilt because you're telling them to do something. If you want to comm, just make a callout (Kiri low, no suzu, no tp, etc.) Shotcalling - if you aren't near pro, you're probably making the wrong shotcall anyways. I guaruntee you that what you're taking for shotcalling is just you making a callout, and not actual shotcalling. This focuses your team's damage onto a single target and can help win, so go for it, but it isn't shotcalling. Follow the order of comms: Ult tracking Pre fight planning Fight rotations Cooldown usage(Ults included) Reset I want to reiterate that the general advice I give to people I coach, and have seen most other coaches give, is that below GM, stay out of VC.

Shot calling is kinda meh nowadays, I just ping and say group up and only call out important abilities.

Never pay attention to team chat. Had a zarya flaming me and the other support for not healing enough and telling us to switch. We were playing lucio and moira and little did that stupid tank know that moira and I were absolutely popping off, carrying the game. Zarya not using cover, obviously not aware of the healing nerfs and advancing on their own to die, leaving us to dominate the enemey team alone. Obviously we won and flamed back hard.

Honestly I think the healing passive is good for the game. For context, I come from Paladins. Ive played it for several thousand hours and have played each role extensively. In paladins they already have out of combat healing (to account for the lack of health packs) and it works out perfectly. Tbh paladins has gotten less and less support and it pains me to see it collapsing. I want overwatch to succeed and more and more I feel that overwatch is taking notes for what works and doesnt work in paladins. There are countless issues in paladins but the champions have always felt fun to play and ultimately fun to play heroes are what keeps rhese games alive. The new passive, and the upcoming ban system only help players enjoy the game more and gives more accessibility to the game.

I feel you :( I got 1.2k hours on Paladins as well and moved on to Overwatch. Tbh i think tiny self regen is good, I'm kinda sad people are kinda overeacting. I do notice the shift in support aggression design as well which i think is good generally, the execution is debatable xD Unrelated but i think Paladins should be come a bit more Overwatch as well. Newer charater are too much about interacting with themself instead of rest of the player. :(

You can make good callouts like moira no fade, but I'd rather just ping them and avoid the wrath of toxic idiots who will start blaming you because you talked. People also just realized that individual skills matter way more than trying to get your team to work together for most of the ladder. You have to be the carry in your games if you want to climb

In regards to the Healing Passive. As a Support main, I don't like it. Healing is usually the most important part of playing a Support hero, them being able to heal is what makes them so important. The only way this will not ruin the game is if it is extremely watered down, to the point where in most cases it wont even activate. For example if you are in the middle of a team fight and your supports both get eliminated, but the rest of the team wins the fight, they will be able to heal while the enemy respawn and their teammates return from spawn. Heroes like Tracer, Sombra, Genji, Pharah, these supports should NOT be able to self heal just by hiding for a few seconds, they should have to think if its worth playing their life or retreating to get a health pack. An invisible sombra in your backline should not be able to self heal, she's literally invisible, thats dumb, tracer as well, she can just triple blink around a corner for a few second and then be right back in the fight full health, thats stupid and this just feels like that last Soujorn Buff, completely unnecessary.

I still think its better to ping and only shortcall the most critical info, because the second a teamfight is lost while someone is shortcalling, the ego on your teammates triggers and suddenly everyone but them is an idiot and don't know how to play the game.

Personally, I think Awkward said it best. Most players below Masters are going to flame you for telling them how to play the game, stop trying to tell other people how to play and focus on your gameplay. After all, he's proven repeatedly you don't need godhood aim to be in a GM lobby. General call outs and pinging an enemy on the flank isn't "shot calling" it's simple spreading information and should be normalized.

TLDR unexpected news: low rank people worse at the game even when purposefully 5 stacking my experience from 5 stacking playing with people from overwatch discord is that even with people used to playing as a group it is a miracle when you can actually make plays together consistently. to be honest even high diamond lobbies it is a coin flip, anything below, might as well sit silent. my best experiences are from playing with people from high masters and gm, people actually know how to play dive and coordinate targets, which I would say is one thing that actually makes or breaks the game when it comes to callouts. i noticed this mainly falls over when the enemies are also at similar or higher level of coordination and we run into dive versus dive. a lot of people get really overwhelmed by that, i guess this is kinda the reason this works so well against less coordinated teams when I play doomfist and my lobby doesn't feed before we are able to get pick and/or bait out important cooldowns and go full send TOGETHER, it's that magic karq talked about anyway, who would have guessed that the highest ranks people are the best at the game 😂

@@notsure5583 it just makes me get tilted honestly, I'm trying to work on it. I just expect people to make a little effort you know? My only real duo attempt was with a Rein, me being Moira, we went on a 7 win streak in mid gold since we worked together. When I play solo support it's usually really difficult to keep everyone alive and get picks, but when I play DPS first thing I do is kill their mercy or kiki, I feel like I can affect a match much more as DPS more often. I try tank now and then, I try to have good positioning and use natural cover, most losses I can see their team is grouped tightly with pocket healers and I have to beg for support. I do watch a lot of videos and try to improve, I'm just having a lot of anxiety from having disappointing expectations, such is life...I thank you for taking the time to write this.

A lot of the shot calling is useless rhetoric comes from EU players where not it is not a guarantee that people on your team speaks english. EU lobbies are also notoriously more toxic so people just stay out of VC and don't bother shot calling.

99 % of ow 2 players dont even know how to properly play overwatch. Even in gm. Its no question why people dont shot call. We shot called in ow 1 cause we had to do literally everything we could to climb. You can hit gm in ow 2 with half a brain cell. If you're a ow 1 gm player you know gm ow 2 players play like plats. Theirs no difference at all between the two anymore. Thats why nobody can ever tell the rank in guess the rank videos anymore lol Its impossible.

Oh, and don't be a black person shotcalling 😂 The game's an automatic loss at that point. 2/4 players that are with you will intentionally throw and call you slurs all throughout the match lmao. This is mostly in high Gold~Plat+ competitive lobbies. Then again, no reason to really play competitive unless you're a streamer or looking to gain rank just because. Quickplay/Arcade is all you need. No need to talk, just use pings

Well you dont need to shot call to get to gm anymore. You dont even have to know how to have good ult economy, how to group up, how to not stagger, or how to pick the correct characters. Especially on console which im pretty sure has the majority of ow players now. gm 1 players yeet their ults 1v5 over and over. They dont know how to die on payload they literally every time try to get away and stagger. Its the devs fault for making it easier to climb. They openly admitted theirs way more gm players then ever. Why shot call if you climb without it?
