Something that bums me out a little about this film is just how incredibly modern it feels. Pixar movies in general, especially the ones that John Lasseter produced, have this rose-tinted nostalgic mid-century Americana vibe to them. Buzz Lightyear as a character feels right out of Flash Gordon or Forbidden Planet. I wished this movie was the love letter to post-atomic age cinema that Buzz himself is.

Well that’s because the Buzz, the character in the movie (not the actual movie, but the movie that Andy watched that came out in 1995) has a completely different brain than Buzz, the toy. Over 20 years since Buzz Lightyear's feature debut and released just a few years after Toy Story 4, Pixar has finally unleashed their definitive take on his highly anticipated origin story. Despite not having seen the original television series it was based on, I do remember having seen a good portion of the pilot film and even though it's not even close to a masterpiece looking back, it is at the very least a decent effort. With this, we have a situation that's very familiar, but the animation and supporting cast do go above and beyond to make this one of the studio's most ambitious animated features yet. Taking place in the far reaches of space millions of light years away, Buzz Lightyear (Chris Evans) is on a mission to achieve hyperspace and return everyone home after crash landing on a deserted planet. When he comes across a mysterious force decades later as a result of the test flights, he realizes that a team is needed to fulfill the mission. With this, he takes on a few rookies of his own to complete the mission once and for all while also stopping the Evil Emperor Zurg and his robot minions from conquering the universe. As this is the film that inspired Andy to get a Buzz Lightyear action figure of his own, there's many iconic quotes and references taken straight from Toy Story that blend right in here. Whether it's his famous catchphrases, the myth that Zurg is truly Buzz's father, or the idea of having a team rather than working alone, everything appears to come full circle, which also seems to match the overall plot of its predecessor, "The Adventure Begins" despite that being considered non-canon to the Toy Story universe. Still, it is nice at having that feeling of nostalgia once again of seeing Lightyear in action on his adventures with Star Command, something that hasn't been explored for generations. The only major gripes I had while watching is that the story isn't anything new and the characters are EXTREMELY under-developed, especially considering its two-hour runtime. We've all seen this underdog story numerous times before where the hero has to learn from the mistakes of his past and accept the fact that he can't work alone. Aside from a few mentions of the rookie recruits' backstories on admitting that they started off messing up, we don't know anything else from the main supporting cast or even Lightyear himself, which seemed off considering he's the focus and should be explored upon as to how he actually became a member of Star Command in the first place. Instead, the film starts out with him already being a Space Ranger in action rather than taking its runtime seriously to explore how and why he was interested in becoming a legit space ranger. In the end, despite having some of the best animation from Pixar and a few funny moments from the supporting characters, "Lightyear" didn't quite live up to being the definitive origin story for Buzz. I will give it this however, for audiences who grew up with the early 2000's series and the Toy Story films, they will most likely have a good time here reliving that feeling of nostalgia. As for everyone else, they'll find it as just another forgettable animated feature that doesn't try to elevate the stakes or try anything new. Being an avid Toy Story fan personally, this is a decent space adventure at best and another forgettable kids film at worst.

SPOILERS This isn't the best Pixar movie, but there's a lot of tongue-in-cheek metaphor going on that I admire and makes it worth a rewatch in my opinion. There's a short story anthology called "Einstein's Dreams" which describes different relativistic situations that act as metaphor on a deeper level. I got a different message from the movie because I felt the movie took a page from that book. On the surface there's all this sci-fi time stuff going on, but metaphorically Buzz is frozen in a moment that everyone else moved on from...and got to live life as a result. When (now old) Buzz realizes he's spent, he tries to recapture his youth, (both literally and metaphorically) but he can't. Old Buzz can't even move forward, because he's always going back (again, literally and metaphorically). It isn't until Buzz stops, takes a good look at himself, and connects to the people around him that he's able to move forward and live again.

Its very loosely unfocused for this Lightyear movie. It got lost for me because the rest of the film just either talked about time traveling subplot, Lightyear just being himself instead of actual as light heart character, the generic sci-fi action cliches that it was rushed, and the ending twist makes no sense which shuts me off that it doesnt felt like a Lightyear movie. I know, for a problematic movie like this, its becoming like "Prometheus" where a film that suppose to be connected with parts that relates to Alien franchise, and here, all connections felt everywhere with not making a source material into a different movie. To be fair, I would see "Buzz Lightyear: Star Command" series which came out in thr early 2000's and its a lot better than the spinoff 2022 movie. Not Infinity enough and beyond.

His friends getting married, starting a family, and having a life. And the end Buzz comes to realize what he's spent decades working on would erase all memories spent on the new planet. Critiques I have though is that the side characters should've been given a little more personality, and that Buzz's personality doesn't fit the one he had in the films. I personally loved it, I think it was solid, although I very much agree with most points, especially with the lack of risks they took for the visuals, both in a space movie and for a Pixar movie. Animation quality was amazing don't get me wrong, it's the art style that I had hoped could use some more, but whatever haha As for Buzz though, I actually found him quite interesting, I'll avoid comparing him to other Pixar characters, because it is evident he'd be lacking. Just in the movie alone he really is the only actual character... If I stick to the movie, I found his journey quite interesting, I was not expecting them to make Buzz so... obsessive. I had not seen many trailers to go in as blank as I could, I didn't even know why they were on the planet they were, so him being as laser focused as to not lose himself in failure felt quite unique, given I'd assume they'd play him more Captain America (and not because of Chris Evans). He carries a lot of guilt, struggles with the notion of failure and has to do everything himself... As Karsten said, fairly cookie cutter don't get me wrong, but I liked it. Not having a short before it was a sin tho Oh and I didn't think at all I'd end up liking Sox, I simply didn't expect him to be much other than a cute thing for the movie, but he's awesome :D *SPOILERS STARTING DOWN HERE* He's so obsessive in fact that he became Zurg, which I also found neat given how Buzz worked across his movie, I wondered about who he'd be, and I honestly felt a bit dumb that I didn't connect the idea that he would be Zurg, again, given Buzz really is the only character in the movie. I simply assumed he'd be more of like... a rookie turned evil or something and it was just another metaphor for his lack of teamwork or what not. I do wonder... with Buzz's arc complete, how will Zurg be a challenge in a sequel should they fulfill the teaser? I guess we'll see.

No, the message of the movie is not that you can't do anything without a team, the message is, that you have to be careful that your desires don't turn into obsessions, because you run the chance of turning into a villian only caring about you own goals and never having a second thought about who you hurt or what you destroy in the process. *****Spoilers***** the difference between the good and bad Lightyear is that the good one has heard the lifestory of his friend Alisha Hawthorne, it made him realise that he was not busy trying to save a rapidly aging crew, they where having full lifes on a planet they called home, while he was only ever testing fuel in the hope of being able to go back to there "real" home and be a space ranger again. In the end he realised that, even if nobody, including himself, would ever know about it, he had no right to erase all the history, just for his own wishes.

The main theme and core message (a lack of self-forgiveness not only leads to self-destruction but it may also lead you to judge the people around you by the same absurd standarts of perfection) is really good. Too bad that the writing just... falters. And that for a movie who's main premise is being a fake 80s/90s movie it really doesn't feel like one at all. Maybe the tone...? but the writing and cinematography and overall art direction feels like any 2010s scifi movie honestly. A friend of man said it felt like a *remake* of the movie that Andy would've watched back then, and I completly agree. Others suggested several ideas on how to improve it... I for one wish Zurg was... well, lets just say he should've been more of a Darth Vader, maybe even Skeletor - a little more dramatic, maybe even cartoonish. I feel they could have executed the same themes around this kind of villain without sacrificing his Villain Persona like it was. I just saw Lightyear today, and overall I enjoyed it. Theater was full of families with kids and I heard basically no restless whining so I agree that it got the kids all enthralled. I went in expecting a standard space movie with a simple character journey, and I got that. Having seen the Buzz Lightyear animated series, Buzz starting with a need to get everything done himself and not trusting others to do the job is fully in character for a Buzz at this point in his life. From a worldbuilding standpoint, having the world they end up on being a habitable tidally locked planet was just a great touch. Usually tidally locked worlds rarely get shown in media, and given the level of time skips in this movie, its a great choice for scene lighting since it doesnt matter what time it actually is, each location will always have the same lighting baring weather and any objects blocking the light. So the commanders office with the perfect sunset will forever have a perfect sunset, which is pretty sweet. I'm not surprised that the fauna on that planet were just odd large arthropods, as thats fairly standard for space movies where the biosphere is a threat rather than a focus. I do enjoy the motile flora though, always a nice touch and relatively viable on a tidally locked world given the small relative area of habitability on the planet. I would have loved to see those flora in full as that first scene where they are almost dragged down into a hole by the vines probably means they were going to enter a form of stomach. I'd wanna know how big these flora are and what sized prey they can consume. Sox is a great companion robot and I want one so badly, I love adorable robots without malicious intent but still ingrained survival instincts. The fact there was no short before the movie was like a punch in the gut, I was so excited to see a new pixar short after so long, and nothing.
