Talking about "everybody clapping and cheering" moments, the best experience I've had with that was during school camp when we rented out the entire theatre to watch Brooklyn. It was the only time that I really felt the "communal experience" of watching in a theatre with heaps of people. We were gasping and cheering all at the same time. I don't think I can ever get that experience back. Maybe at a film festival but I have never been to a big one before. I've been to some smaller ones where most of the audience are family and friends of the filmmakers. It's not quite the same. About the bad cinema etiquette, I think I have just been lucky. I have yet to encounter the horrible behaviours that I hear people complaining about online. I guess it's because I don't go to the movies often enough coupled with the fact that I like to go to the independent cinema rather than the big chain ones. The demographic of people going to the indie cinema are probably big movie fans themselves and are more likely to respect the etiquette. The audience there aren't usually there to kill some time. Also the movies that screen there are mostly indie films which may deter most of the crappy moviegoers away. Also, the indie cinema is actually cheaper than the big chains, especially when you go on their discount day. It can be like half the price of a regular ticket from a chain.

The absolute most wild example of bad theater etiquette I’ve ever experienced is when I was watching the first Hobbit movie. There was a guy about three rows in front of me, who about 1/3 of the way through the movie pulled out his phone and started listening to music with his screen at max brightness. Almost immediately, a guy close to me yelled “turn that shit off” at the top of his lungs, and then the guy who pulled out his phone got visibly upset and stormed out of the theater. Whether it's being on your phone or talking during the film, just DON'T! Be respectful of the people around you. Heck, you paid for the movie too so why are you not paying attention yourself? Might as well just not have come to the theater if you're just going to be on your phone the whole time. Also yes the mess that people leave behind is crazy! I've seen buckets of full popcorn and drinks spilled all over the floor like... did you forget how to eat in the 2 hours you were there? Someone has to clean that up, the least you can do is not leave it such a mess. Same with going to see a play or musical, don't be screaming your head off during the entire performance like it's a concert. Let the actors/actresses finish before you clap and cheer.

it's quite interesting what you were saying about people trying to make movie theaters feel like home etc. I'm from Europe, and here, at least at the more traditional theaters, going to the movies feels a lot more “festive“ and special, like, we will have red velvet seats and things like using your phone or talking too loudly are absolutely looked down upon. when I was in the US for a semester, I was baffled about the fact that you guys often have these massive adjustable seats, you're able to bring hot food in there, and there's people bringing blankets, wearing sweatpants etc. I guess it's just a different view of going to the movies in general, like, to me it's (also) about honoring a piece of filmmaking, whereas in the US it felt more like a relaxing free time activity, sometimes the actual movie didn't even feel like the focus point of the experience lol

I always turn my phone all the way off during movies. I paid for the movie, I wanna lock tf in and be immersed. Also, I’m normally dead silent during a movie. Sometimes there is the occasional comment or question to a fellow viewer, but I always make it short and fast so that it doesn’t detract from the movie. The only exception to being silent was on the No Way Home rerelease a few weeks ago. I felt so ecstatic during the climax (especially after watching every other Spider movie during the past 7 weeks) that I couldn’t help but cheer. The whole theater felt the same way, so I wasn’t alone. I probably wouldn’t have begun being vocal had the rest of the theater not been the same. In all other cases, I’m dead silent and my phone is dead off.

Eclectic films like poor things, salt burn, killers of the flower moon are niche films so the audience is full of like minded folks that enjoy the art of theatre not band wagoners that watch it because of a tik tok trend🤧 Horror films I see in the daytime and a few weeks after it's release. For the majority of the film, there was a group of people not far from me who kept checking their phones (that weren’t dimmed down) and having the loudest whispered conversations I’ve ever heard as well as just being obnoxious, especially during the brief love scene. It was definitely a dampener on my experience.

This video needs to be shown to everyone on the planet, and they need to fully watch it.....Because if they can't fully watch this video then they can't come to the movie theatres until they do, whether it be them on their phone, bringing an actual new born baby, making a mess, talking and making noise throughout the entire movie they should just stay home if thier doing all of the above unless it's watching this video

I have been lucky enough to have never had a bad theater experience. I guess that's why I love the theater experience so much compared to others who haven't been so lucky.

@@Ray03595 Nah even in Europe theater experiences can be really bad, I go to the cinema like 2-3 times a week and it can be sooo bad

The only acceptable talking I’ve heard in a movie this year was when they rereleased Tenet and near the end of the movie when describing the scientist who invented inversion they call her “the Oppenheimer of her time” and the guy next to me excitedly yell/whispered “Oppy!”

As someone who can get really distracted due to their ADHD, I would go as far to say "don't use your phone no matter what and if you have to use it then exit the theatre" but besides that I completely agree. Great video, I wish more people followed these rules because (like all of us) I truly love cinema and hate to be taken out of it.

As a concessions employee, here’s another thing: know what you’re going to order before you get to the front of the line. Like, if you’re the first person there and are just seeing the menu, I’m not talking to you, but if it’s a slammed crowd and you have been waiting for a good bit of time and get to the front and don’t know what you want, you make everyone’s life harder. It takes longer for concessions employees, it makes the people behind you wait longer, just know the basics of what you’re getting

There is literally a cinema mode for the Apple Watch. It's right there in your control center for this exact purpose. It simply prevents the screen from turning on every time you raise your wrist and it turns on silent mode.

On the Apple Watch point, there literally is a mode called “Theatre mode” that does exactly what your kind of convoluted steps would do, and yet I am the only person I know that uses this mode or even knows it straight up exists

THANK YOU. i go to the theatre often and i’ve noticed so many lapses in etiquette that it drives me crazy every time. i was at a screening of lisa frankenstein back when it came out and there was this one dude who would not shut up during the entire thing. at one point he leaned over to me and asked, very loudly, what the name of the movie was. BROTHER YOU BOUGHT THE TICKET!! i can’t with some people, i just can’t…

To this day I cannot enjoy Zootopia thanks to the mom who brought her child with behavioral issues to the screening & had the audacity to get upset at annoyed people *despite doing NOTHING to control his howling & moving about the aisle saying ‘this movie is boring I wanna go home’ the entire time*

For the Apple Watch, there is an option on the watch to turn off the screen called Theater Mode. Hit that button and your screen won't turn on unless you hit a button and/or the crown.

Oh my God, I went to go see one of my favorite movies of all time, the tale of the princess kaguya 6 years ago, and I was sat next to a couple who absolutely never shut the fuck up the whole movie. Extrovert meets Extrovert who's conversation NEVER STOPPED. This aint your fucking living room.

The past 2 times I’ve gone to the theatre, people have had the AUDACITY to turn the flashlight on their phone and wave it at peoples faces looking for someone during the movie…

This is what they need to show before the trailers. Just loop this. When I went and say Abigail a while back there was this couple 3 or 4 rows ahead of me that just stood up in the middle of the movie and were talking or arguing with each other and I swear the guy had some VR headset on. This went on for nearly 2 minutes and then they thankfully left. Genuinely the most confused I’ve been while watching a movie.

The Apple Watch actually has a theater mode. You turn it on and the screen won’t wake automatically when raised and if it has an always on display it will turn that off until theater mode is turned back off.

A thing I miss about the world before the 1990s: The feeling of being temporarily free of social or professional or familial obligations, of simply not being contactable -- when your plane takes off or you get into a car or the lights go down in a movie theater. Now everybody expects you to be at their beck and call 24/7. The greatest feeling in the world sometimes is being unreachable. Appreciate it. Savor it. Enjoy it. Shut up, turn your phone off, and give yourself over to the movie -- or get the hell out. It's an experience that happens on its own timetable, not yours. You are not in charge.

The only time I ever take my phone out at the movies is if I'm certain I'm the only one in the theater, which is one of the reasons the center of the back row is my favorite place to sit when I see a movie. Unfortunately, that also means I always see it whenever anybody else in the theater is less considerate with their screens...
