... I'm just gonna say it, Over The Garden Wall brought me here. but that's not at all that I was out of touch with this music before watching that series, it's just that's what made me want to hear Samuel Ramey sing this particular song, for some reason. And I'm really glad I did. this is great, I keep listening to it over again.

To dream ... the impossible dream ... To fight ... the unbeatable foe ... To bear ... with unbearable sorrow ... To run ... where the brave dare not go ... To right ... the unrightable wrong ... To love ... pure and chaste from afar ... To try ... when your arms are too weary ... To reach ... the unreachable star ... This is my quest, to follow that star ... No matter how hopeless, no matter how far ... To fight for the right, without question or pause ... To be willing to march into Hell, for a Heavenly cause ... And I know if I'll only be true, to this glorious quest, That my heart will lie peaceful and calm, when I'm laid to my rest ... And the world will be better for this: That one man, scorned and covered with scars, Still strove, with his last ounce of courage, To reach ... the unreachable star ...

He is a gentleman and an amazing musician with a voice like liquid gold! When I was a voice major some years back (before I burned some bridges and didn't know how to deal with people always asking if I was "the guy with the voice), my ultimate goal was to get my degree and get to work with him. Man has been a hero of mine and will always be so. Amazing voice he has!

An American treasure. Sam Ramey deserves a Presidential Medal of Freedom. Once during a gala performance that might have been spotty or not up to snuff Luciano Pavarotti said “ Ramey was the only one who didn’t get booed ! “

Are all the comments about his hair and looks ironic, lol? I remember seeing this when t was first broadcast in 92, I think. Was 17 and never heard of Ramey. My first thought was (and I say this with total affection) that he looked like a young willy nelson after a long crack binge. Later on I sang with him at LOC and he told a story that one of the ladies at the nearby Potbelly sandwich shop had said to him “did anyone ever tell you you look just like one of them Bee Gees?” His answer, in his deep bass voice “yeah but I don’t sound like them.”

I saw him sing on New Year's Eve at the Metropolitan Opera House in NYC with Maestro James Levine conducting. What a delightful way to ring in the new year! I also saw Mr. Ramey sing in Dr. Faustus. He was Mephistophelse, the devil, to whom Dr. Faust sold his soul. Renee Fleming & Dimitri Horostovsky filled out the cast. All great performances.

Every time I hear him it is the same experience as I tried to express in the limitations of the English language. My virginal introduction to Ramey was at the New York City Opera in the late 70's or early 80's in traviata. As the Elder Germont, he sang so magnificently that I said to a friend that he didn't belong at The New York City Opera but acrosss the court at the met. Prophetic?

no, he is basso cantante. he sings with a florid, lyrical line, easily sings in the highest tessitura of the bass voice, has top notes like a baritone (up to an effortless high G) and has coloratura technique that would put most leggiero sopranos to shame. I would use the term "dramatic coloratura bass" if it existed, because he's basically the bass equivalent to Joan Sutherland XD

This song is a lot harder than I originally thought. If you really sing it as Ramey does here, you find yourself gasping for breath. Most of the pop singer spechstimme it and try to cover their inability to carry the line as "interpretation". Ramey just sails through it as if it were nothing.
