One of the most gut-wrenchingly powerful performances I have seen and heard. The magnificent voice of Samuel Ramey and the impassioned performance of the orchestra under the skilled baton of Maestro Levine (particularly the solo trumpeter) make for an outstanding listening experience.

And Glenn Miller makes Hines sound like a school boy -- its not a contest of who has the darkest, lowest voice (Ramey's range was actually lower than Hines, anyway). Hines was fantastic, and Ramey is fantastic -- they have different voices.

In my youth in the 1940s l heard the English bass Owen Brannigan singing this wonderful aria at the annual "Messiah" in the Usher Hall in Edinburgh on the "New Year " concert. My person bass hero was Boris Christov but l must admit Samuel Ramey performs to perfection in this superb video. Many thanks to "You Tube" for allowing me to hear this masterful performance and making an old Opera Buff very happy.!!!!!!

Great performance! Ramey sounds fantastic, a beautiful, robust, bass soloist. And the trumpet soloist, Phillip Smith (principal trumpet with the New York Philharmonic) is as good as they get, and plays equally beautifully here. Ramey and Smith are such excellent musicians that they are able to compliment each other so well in this performance, bringing their parts out more where appropriate, and falling more into the background where that is called for (nice dynamic contrasts and phrasing) and they always achieve perfect balance, with both parts clearly heard throughout the piece.

In a heavy performance, that is using operatic talelnts, orchestra and conductor who is accostomed to opera, I can only say that the finality of said performances must be to show talents to touch the ears. However, with lighter, sensitive voices, orchestra, chorus and conductor, I think the finality is to touch the soul. In the case of oratorios, cantatas and masses I choose the performance according to who is performing what. Yes, a robust "The trumpet shall sound" from the Messiah by G.F. Handel as sung by Samuel Ramey is wonderful to listen to. However, Phillip Sly's rendition reacdhes the soul.

Among the "oldtimers" hahaha ( depending on your age)..... THE BEST of AMERICANS... Bass... Ramey, Mezzo.... (no DOUBT about this one) Marilyn Horne.... and Soprano Leontyne Price. Seriously. HOLY BREATH CONTROL, mistress of glissando, pianissimo, fortissimo, phrasing (see her "farewell performance at the Met" ...the O Patria Mia from Aida where she set a record breaking standing ovation. The BEST part, is her reaction to the applause after she completes the aria. I cannot think of the link but NOT the one on KZbin as presented by R. Fleming. Speaking strictly of American singers, having some trouble with thinking of a tenor of the same era... perhaps, Hadley??? Someone who may read this. Help me out.

I used to be a pretty good classical baritone. And I had a great voice teacher. He had studied with Oren Brown. He kept telling me that I had to get deeper into this text. One day, he asked me whether I was A Christian. I am now. But I was then an agnostic. And he told me "You can be any agnostic you wanna be, but when you sing this, you have to be a Christian, damn your ass!"
