With all due respect to his predecessors, no one was able to produce such variety of rhythms & sounds till his entry. Underrated Genius, his knowledge and application of contrapuntal music is phenomenal, especially since most Indian composers prefer composing monophonic music,focusing on only one central melody, as opposed to the rich textures of polyphonic music which is so prevalent in his music. I don't speak his language, but the demonstration and explanation he provided transcends all language barriers.

Listen to it critically if you have an abiding interest in true "genius" music, transcending academic templates and geographies and you'll have a glimpse of "JenmaSaabhalyam". For another glimpse of the same in a different musical matrix,listen to his "Vasantha Kaalam Varumo,Nilai Maarumo" in the movie *Marakka Mudiyumaa*composed and rendered ingeniously,transmuting the vocal limitations of P.Suseela and also the timbre-constraints of Jesudoss into a timeless,matchless masterpiece with the drunken babble of SSR in Jesudoss's vocals forming the counterpoint as aalaap to Suseela 's vocals to heroine Devika 's character,both singing in different locales without knowing that they are siblings.Fantastic lyric was penned by கலைஞர் மு.கருணாநிதி. Unfortunately,the song had to be deleted from the film as the'unschooled' masses became restless during the song and went out for cigarette break. True world-class classics will always make people restless,uncomfortable and force them to choose an escapist route to avoid facing reality.This is true of every True Blue Maestro's authentic creations in any Arts,the world over.

Like Shankar Jaikishan's own instrumental album or R D Burman's work during that period, all that it does is use Western percussion and some instruments often used in jazz like guitar and saxophone. It doesn't exhibit the harmonic vocabulary of jazz and is at the most a pastiche of musical movements commonly heard in jazz. I mean, it is commendable but to attempt it to spin it as some vaunted art that Raja devotees don't want to give credit to speaks volumes about that poster (the one above you). Raja has actually done fugue with Carnatic melody. Do people realise what that means and how difficult it is?

I beg to disagree with you on the Counterpoint topic. It was not created by Yohan Sebastian Bach, the technique of Counterpoint has a very ancient history. It existed since the late 9th century - if not earlier, it was known as 'organum' then. Bach and other modern composers like Fux have only used it very skillfully in the modern times. We can say that this technique only gained popularity during the Renaissance period through the compositions of Back and Fux.
