For the record: there are more reasons as to why karts are considered bad, but that's for a better KZbinr to make than me lol. I should probably mention that I was sick while I recorded this (i had nothing better to do). At around 1:05 I mentioned a technical explanation, so here is an explanation from Blounard about why Inside Drift doesn't benefit Karts the same way it does Bikes: Karts drift is different from IDB drift : - Karts have extra drift tightness at the beginning of their drift. (IIRC it's a 50% drift bonus at the very start). This drift bonus decrease over time when you are in a drift, and reset to it's max value when you start a new drift. This is the main reason why re drift is a thing. - IDB lean when drifting. This leaning actually modify how tight they can take corners. Leaning that comes from the shape of the road actually affect bike's drift tightness. This is why IDB have an easy time taking U turn that are slanted up (like RR last turn, or some MT branch turn). The same way, bikes have a hard time taking turn slanted down (like the first turn after canon in MT, or taking tight turns when the road is shapped like the inside of KC's pipe) For example about lean special rotation, if on a CT there is a tight U turn, and the CT creator is like "i'm gonna slope that turn so even spear can make it", it's gonna only benefit IDB

Additionally, I think that the reason outside drift bikes aren't viable in vanilla mkwii is because the outside drift requires them to be in a drift for longer, and therefore not at their max speed. Inside drift seems particularly suited to bikes to me because inside drift bikes can start their drifts later and thus spend less time drifting and more in a wheelie.

While that is partially true; we also can't ignore the fact that for some reason Nintendo made outside drifting bikes comically slow. Even with inside drift there are only 2 that would be even remotely considered usable for the majority of the playerbase (being the standard bikes and shooting star)

Karts we’re never bad. Its just the wheelie mechanics alone ascend inward bikes to break the game. Inside drift is 1 thing to have but the wheelies themselves is another. If u noticed not just the ability to increase your top speed by 15%, but that speed multiplier also stacks on top of any kind of boost u have. For example, Funky Flame goes at 84.01 normally, then 96.61 with wheelies, if u were to do a MT, it brings u to 100.81 but then when u wheelie during the mt boost, that 100.81 goes up to 113.41 until the boost runs out. Then goes down to 96.61 once the mt boost is done. U can also see the wheelie stack on trick boosts which is a 1.3x speed bonus. On Funky Flame, its from 84.01 to 109.21 until the trick boost runs out but stack the wheelie on top of that, its from 109.21 to 121.81. On 150cc, max speed is capped at 120 flat btw. Its the speed multiplier that wheelies have is what makes bikes game breaking cuz they can stack on top of boosts and just blitz through karts wit no effort

There are no online shortcuts that you can't do on kart, some are just a little harder (like Grumble Volcano no stop rock hop due to clipping). Having a little extra speed adds in making those shortcuts that aren't that online viable into making them very online viable (like TF lakecut)

Basically i think another possible reason they are slightly unviable is because of how cornering can be. Granted it can be used very effectively, but overall karts (and some bikes too) have pretty harsh cornering in this game. Maybe thats just a skill issue though. I agree on the speed part though.

If you look at the DKM part you'll see cornering is a non-issue, especially for the viable karts. The biggest cornering issue is actually the fact that karts have a bigger hitbox and get trapped more easily (N64BC is notorious for this)

The flame flyer is probably the coolest vehicle in the game. It's insane to me that it only moves about 2% faster than the flame runner despite wheelies giving a 15% speed boost lol. Personally I really like the introduction of the purple mini-turbo that Retro Rewind has, since it doesn't actually change any of the intrinstic stats of any of the karts, it just gives them an ability that bikes do not have. Flame flyer with outside drift and purple mini turbos probably can keep up with flame runners on many courses, at least for time trials (actual matches with more than 7 players tend to be rough for the big karts since they get hit by everything). It's pretty sad that some vehicles like the offroader wouldn't even be viable with a 5% speed boost and purple MT since they are so abysmally slow. Riibalanced seemed to go way overboard with the balance changes though.

this is fascinating to me because i always felt like something was *off* about inside drift karts and couldn't quite put my finger on it. it just felt like despite nominally now having inside drift, and thus should be better, they were just, the same? or worse in many scenarios? i think what kills karts for me is the sideways momentum after a drift that becomes really hard to counteract if you don't know what you're doing, but this video does a great job showing how while the skill floor for karts is high, the skill ceiling is also super high and shouldn't be counted out. i've been using karts a lot more lately to get a general feel for them and while they're no flame runner or mach bike, they're not bad! mini beast i find especially fun to play around with, it drifts so nicely

There's more to karts being bad than the time trial applications you demonstrated here. Your maneuverability is so much worse, your hitbox is massive, and getting bumped hurts you a ton because it takes you out of your very specific optimal karting lines, this is what really kills them. It's why I unironically believe automatic sprinter is a better online vehicle for the average 7500-8500VR player than any of the top manual karts. You have essentially inside drift maneuverability to let you dodge items without losing any speed.

Being an automatic user completely eliminates needing to deal with all the issues that cause other people to feel like they have no control. I historically have used automatic wild wing on the base wiimote and the motion control presents no issue on any course. Problem is you get people who see drifting as the only part of the game they actually want, so they drift and inevitable say the motion control sucks or that rainbow road is hard.

But seriously yeah karts aren't bad, people are only saying that because they have a skill problem and always think inside drift = automatically better, well not always, like come on, we need love for outside drift stuff as well, not just for karts but also outside drift bikes, even they get the short end of the stick despite them having wheelies, like I'm not saying karts are perfect but they aren't as bad as people make them out to be, besides even if they were inside drift they wouldn't work as efficiently so therefore that people that these people make are just counterproductive so yeah. In hindsight karts are over hated, like they deserve some love, like after all I can see a handful of this community use karts, and even have a kart longue room dedicated to using karts so yeah, as someone who is a casual player who also uses karts, this is the point that deserves to be put across to get people to have a better understanding that karts aren't bad because of the lack of drift or wheelies, they are mainly because of the speed but that doesn't matter because at the end of the day I just use what I like regardless of stats and that's ok so yeah, overall great demonstration and great video on the subject, keep it up.

auto jets is also fastest in the case of the offroad glitch, which occurs when you hit the kcl flag present in the ramps on Mushroom Gorge without hitting a mushroom after. It locks your vehicle at its top base speed even if you wheelie or miniturbo. Since jets has the highest base speed, it is fastest in this case. Personally my skills peak much higher with karts and outside bikes, where I've broken into 8000VR with things like the Jetsetter, Shooting Star and a few others. Meanwhile the only Inside drifting bike I've gotten that far with is the Spear on Auto. I'm a Jetsetter main having gotten to 8.4k So far. What I've noticed is it absolutely murders tracks heavy on speed panels, zippers and grass shortcuts. What's especially fun is you can swerve like a maniac to bump the bikes nearby, and still be going top speed.

I actually main inside in mk8dx, it isnt as bad, if you play good enough you can keep up with the rest and due to taking different linrs you get hit less and also you can wall dodge red shells easily with any bike but inside drift bikes make it somewhat essier to do Also you can correct without losing speed and take better racing lines than any karter Outside does have lots of techniques like the super bounce and the kusan slide and kusan airhop and others but inside has its advantages too 8Dx is way too balanced to really make any vehicle 100% bad

for me the only reason ( except this one ) kart are worse than bike ( i'm a kart player for around 10 to 12 years , switched to bike recently ) it's because of their size , i don't play online that much or at all after the shutdown of the server , so i'm a Time Trialer , and usually Kart are bigger so for me at least it's harder to take some ways

bikes have better maneuverability (at least the inside drift ones), smaller hitbox. and good luck snaking with a kart without hitting anything.

How can people say bikes in Mario kart Wii are good? When u drift it's awful it goes ridiculously out of control. Karts are actually able to drive and drift normally. I'm glad they fixed the bikes in Mario kart 8.
