No other city in Australia can compare to Melbourne when it comes to trams. The city boasts a complex and fascinating network, with a huge variety of units ranging from the famous W Class (first introduced in 1923) through 1980s A and B class units and the much newer Bombardier E Class , introduced in 2015. During September 2018, we were lucky enough to stay at a hotel on Flinders Street, close to the junction with Spencer Street and midway between Flinders Street and Spencer Street (Southern Cross) stations. Most of the shots in this video were taken within a couple of minutes walk of the hotel, in an area bounded by the two stations, the CBD and the casino, just over the river. The opening scene shows what a fabulous location Flinders Street is for transport enthusiasts, and the river Yarra is quite literally a stones throw away on the other side of the railway line. On a Saturday evening, the city comes alive with people heading out for a good time; the tram network plays a integral part in getting revelers in and out of the city centre. We see early evening trams around Flinders Street Station, with its famous clocks. We then see A class trams operating route number 70 to Wattle Park which serves the sporting precinct, adjacent to the Rod Laver Arena where the Australian Open Tennis Tournament is held each January. Returning to the city centre, we see trams in the dark passing the Crown Casino and Spencer Street (Southern Cross) Station, as well as running down Flinders Street.
