Kashmiri Pandits share personal experiences of brutality in Kashmir before their exodus

On Hum Log, we speak to some Kashmiri Pandits who are living in exile after having left their properties behind in the 90s. Some of them narrate personal experiences of brutality they had to suffer due to separatists and extremist groups. Opposition parties in Kashmir have objected to allotting lands to rehabilitate Kashmiri Pandits in independent clusters, though the central government has assured to settle them in 'composite townships'. Prior to the muslim invasions of Kashmir, all the four varnas (brahmins, kshtria, vaish, sudra) with several jatis (castes) were prevalent. From 11th century onwards, and by devious and heinous methods (in the 14th century King Rinchen, a buddhist, became muslim to avoid confrontation with the invaders, and this resulted in mass conversion), the majority of the population of Kashmir was converted to Islam, and only Brahmins were allowed to practise Hindusim because the muslim Kings needed learned and educated people to run their administration. However, we still have around 5% who are non-brahmins with surnames such as Trambu, Vora etc. The Kashmiri Brahmins would have been wiped out in any case had the Sikhs and the Dogras not taken over from the Afghans in early 19th century.

The ghosts of the October 1947 Kabaili raid into Kashmir, where they did not even spare local Kashmiri muslims, and the 1947 bloodshed in Punjab were always lurking in our minds when the newspaper delivery boy came into our house for tea in 1990 and said that he has seen our names (the entire family) on the HIT LIST in the local masjid. My father disagreed with him and was 100% certain that our family will not be harmed (he was a young boy in 1947 during the Kabaili raid when both Kashmiri muslims and pandits remained together), but he was wrong. Justice NK Ganjoo was shot dead in Nov 1989 (his house was 200 yards from our house), but that was sort of acceptable to Pandits since he was the one who had signed the death penalty of Maqbool Bhat in 1968. Within a couple of days of the warning about the HIT LIST, a Kashmiri Pandit Teacher on a 2-wheeler was shot dead right in front of our house in Srinagar. We saw the militants running away. Within 2 days, 2 rounds were fired towards our main door, narrowly missing our domestic helper. The next day at 5:00am in the morning we left the Valley.

so true sadly... there were a combination of factors at that time , around 1989 - 90....as explained by Lt.Gen Syed Ata Hasnain. a weak central govt, state police machinery was weak, PM VP Singh & his ministers, who were unwilling to look into what was really happening in kashmir, home minister Mufti sayeed, who was sympathetic to the cause of JKLF, state CM farooq abdullah who was facilitating the actions of terror groups, weak opposition in parliament, and most importantly a better placed pakistan with its ISI / army radicalizing the youth of kashmir, sending tapes of speeches of mullahs from pakistan into J&K, sponsoring, training, arming, coordinating the terror groups/ camps and sending them inside India... so even though the governor Jagmohan was sincere in trying to stop the genocide, sadly none actually cooperated with him.

My fear is Kashmiri Muslims will see them as they have seen them during 1990s - as 'India Agents' and will try to harm them in every ways possible... So sad. As the elderly gentleman said and as did Susheel Pandit,they were always living in fear of the majority, it was an existence of compromise, not as equals, only it got worse and violent by 1990. I was there is 1987 for a couple of months. Local kashmiri Muslims never identified themselves as Indians. And their Muslim Brotherhood was what mattered to them. Come to think of it, the entire lot at one point of time, few centuries back must have been Hindus and converted later. Violent religion which believes that non Muslims have no right to live. Kashmiri Pandits are doing great across fields in the country, as journalist, as diplomats etc etc. Thank God, they can move to other parts of India .
