@Kassian the word you forgot was good placement, Whitney knows where to add an inflection for emphasis, or scale in the right place and she never has to over sing a song. I don't know if what I'm about to say will make sense, but Whitney will sing ahead of the chorus and she knows how to do it place her element whether its a run, scale, inflection, or holding a note so she lets her vibrato accentuate the music she is singing to and it's just freaking amazing, no one can teach this, you can't learn this from a school, it's a gift to have an ear and a voice that works together so harmonious, that she can listen to a chord, melody or rhythm and falls right into and her voice adjusts automatically. This is why I say this is a heavenly gift and many are given this gift but hers was a special gift from God, her gift to sing didn't come from a grab bag it came from God himself and that is why you can hear the pureness when she sings.

I saw this when it first came on the Grammy's in 1989 and I was floored mesmerized and astonished by what my ears had just listen to live with an orchestra. Those notes gave me goosebumps to the point I found myself in tears and didn't know why I was crying. All I know is I just heard the best voice who's career professionally was still brand new. The people in the audience, the white entertainers found her refreshing that she could really be so little with such a big voice, and they knew not only was she going to be great, but she was going to clean up the American Music Awards, Grammys, and the Billboard Awards and take a lot of trophies home. There was not one African American female artist able to represent pop in a way that she accepted from the very beginning. That timbre, vibrato and tone is everything

Look, let's be honest and upfront, Whitney is and will always remain, the greatest singer who not only lived, but will ever live!! Why, not only because she possessed vocal qualities unmatched by any other singer living or dead, but because she was divinely gifted, and had the total package. Can anyone tell me of any singer/musician who possessed such grace, stunning beauty, stage presence, unmatched tone, timbre, resonance, clarity of diction, incredible vibrato, rums and riffs and of course, angelic head voice and immaculate control!!! I am waiting!! Let me say one last thing that is indisputable - she has the bar for vocal ability so high that I am afraid, I cannot identify anyone who has reached it!!

Loved your reaction! This performance is so iconic and I loved hearing your thoughts. That voice is one of a kind for sure. If you’re looking for more Whitney, I’d recommend: - “Didn’t We Almost Have it All” Saratoga Springs, NY. You can just YT it, I think they consider that the official video even thought it’s from a performance at one of the concerts. It’s literally just Whitney signing on the stage, but her vocal interpretation that night was OUT OF THIS WORLD.

If you think that was phenomenal, you need to check out her epic, and to this day yet to be outdone, performance of the “Star Spangled Banner” at Super Bowl XXV in Tampa Florida in 1991. I am old enough to have the great fortune to have witnessed it live. It was the perfect storm of emotion and patriotism that came together that day. Just 10 days prior our troops were deployed as America entered war in the Persian gulf. Fathers, mothers, brothers, sisters, sons, daughters, etc were either in the Middle East are on their way there. America was on edge and we were all looking for something to lighten our spirits. It was that time of the year for the Super Bowl and Whitney Houston delivered a performance of our national anthem that took our souls to the stratosphere.
