After 8 months of owning a very clean, 2 owner 1991 Foxbody Mustang GT Convertible, I feel like I have a pretty good understanding of the pros and cons of owning one now. I've taken the car apart, restored most of the common issues the fox body mustangs suffers from, adjusted everything bumper to bumper, and finally put some miles on the car to shake it down. Follow along as I share my opinions and show you the items that I have struggled with so far by owning this 1991 Foxbody convertible GT.

I've had my 89 GT convertible since it was new. I put the top down in the spring and put it up in the fall for storage. I can barely stand driving it with the top up. Too many noises! Top down, I love it! Good info about the springs and creaks. 👍

I got my 89 25th anniversary edition convertible in "Arrest me red" in 1990. Did all the bolt ons, Magnaflo, pony wheels etc. I was 21 at the time and kept that car for 10 years. Sure brings back some good memories! I felt like the king of my small town.

I bought a new '87 GT convertible with less than 250 miles (dealer demo) back in the day. After about 4 months I was over the wind noise on the highway, you could barely have a conversation with someone in the passenger seat without raising your voice. The only saving grace of the ragtop was being at a stoplight on a nice day or night, then dropping the top to enjoy it.

I’m the proud original owner of a 91 Wild Strawberry GT convertible. Within a few years of owning it, I installed a Kenny Brown 6 piece matrix bracing that includes subframe connectors and jacking rails. I also installed a strut tower brace and lowering springs. For many years, I had a supercharger on the car with a built automatic and over 500 hp. Since I stiffened up the chassis and modified it, it rides like a tank. I know if I ever got serious and put some real sticky tires on it, I won’t do any damage to the car. BTW… I have a gen one coyote in it now. Long story… I had an engine fire that luckily stayed north of the firewall. And luckily, I had a good insurance policy on it to help pay for the engine and restoration.

Video is right on point. The doors and windows on the Convertible fox body needs adjustment every now and then. I just adjusted my door striker plate this summer. Door was not closing all the way and was rattling badly. Now both doors close properly and do not rattle at least for now. 😆 There’s nothing like a convertible-top down listening to your favorite music with your family beside you.

Back when I had one of these in the 90's it was common for people to talk about welding in subframe connectors and adding a strut or k-member brace. The platform is super flexy-even the hardtops. Of course, I'm sure that adding that stuff detracts from originality today, but they do solve a lot of the problems. Forget the vehicle being 35 years old-they were bad when they were 5 years old.

It definitely takes a special and dedicated kind of owner to properly maintain these cars. I put hatch/notch lower springs on my Vert and have no issue. When I read reviews on these particular springs I saw several reviews on owners with Verts and they all said they had no issues so I took the chance. So maybe it just depends on the springs. My 91 LX Vert weights 2,960, GT Vert is 3,327. GT hatch is 3,190. So the crazy thing is my LX Vert is 130 lbs lighter than a hatch GT!!! Now a LX hatch and notch is lighter of course. 2,824 and 2,759 respectively. So there is a 568lb difference between the 2 Foxes in your garage. Living in Florida the top is down on mine probably 80 percent of the time. Summer(6 months)evenings and nights. The other 6 months is beautiful and dry and the top is down just about every time driving. As you know a completely different driving experience with the top down. Jamming gears with the top down is hard to beat. Now if I lived in a cold climate I would want a hard top instead. Even better yet 2 cars like you have now lol.

Stats are for 1990 model year '90 Mustang GT coupe, curb weight -2,825 lb '90 Mustang GT convertible's weight - 2,975 lbs The convertible weighs 148 lbs more than the hardtop coupe. This is based on stock vehicles' factory specs. 148 lbs is a pretty big difference..... That's just about the weight of 2 uncured sacks of concrete. Just imagine tossing those 80lb bags into your trunk. Yeah,. It's gonna make your hardtop's stance sag a bit, and it's definitely gonna be noticeable in how the car handles around curves.

I bought an 88 gt vert a couple years ago and although I've had many foxbody's this was my first vert. Mine was a straight clean rust free car, but I noticed a lot of tlc issues that needed addressing when I purchased it. I'm handy but the squeaks were driving me f**king bonkers, sorry Sadie, I hope that your not reading this. I tried everything from double sided tape on the a pillar covers to tightening the screws. I added frame connectors, a must for most foxes but a definite yes for a vert. Nothing worked, although better, so I asked a bud of mine to take it for a day, who has had a few verts. A couple of days later he says, take her for a drive, and wow it was so much better!! These verts will never be silent. 92-93 maybe 91 had an insulated top which cuts down on some noise, if replacing the top, not a bad idea. So I asked, where was the squeaking coming from, it was the doors, and not rattling from the striker bushings etc.. It was the top corners of the interior door panels rubbing against trim pieces causing the squeak. The fix is a little silicone grease on the corners, front and rear of both doors, just a c hair of grease, wow what a difference. I put a smear on every spring. I was literally going to sell the car. Sorry for the long winded comment, I searched the web and not one person mentioned this, and nothing that was mentioned worked. I hope this helps boyz and girlz.

I love my 86 vert but will the windows ever go up without being crooked or not sealed up right? I seriously doubt it. The passenger side window stops about halfway up and then it needs finesse to go up the rest of the way lol.

I had a 1988 GT T top, they cut the window frames and roofs off at a custom shop to build all the fox body t tops, none were actually built in the factory, it didnt even have the convertible doors which I think would have helped to keep the windows in their seal, they also dont have the under body bracing, after tons of adjusting I got it to where the windows would only start to whistle and begin to pull out at 120mph, it rattled and creaked a lot but not nearly as bad when the tops were taken off, I loved it but in retrospective it was trash, if I ever get another fox body it will be a hard top

I have a 1990 LX hatch I've owned since new and a totally stock-to-the-silencer '87 GT convertible (which I got because I like the non-flag mirrors) and have to agree about the noise. The only mod the GT will ever get were subframe connectors, but even with, the car is a bit of a crash-fest. Nothing bad, but they couldn't sell 'em like that today. Being there "in the day" I will also say that the 'verts don't handle or brake as well as a hatch or sedan. That said? Since they're like a half-price proposition I am glad I got mine when I did. Don't see that holding up long-term. '65 Mustang convertibles band and crash too...

Verts get a lot of hate because of the twist. A vert would bring the most joy to my family. If I was not considering the fam I would get another LX or GT hard top. Question: how much performance can you safely do to a vert without twisting it up?

So i recently purchased a 92 lx vert with the saleen body kit and spoiler. It has an e303 cam and head work along with a cai. I need to get new rims but am only interested in a staggered 9x18 / 10x18 (or17) setup. Any tips? Thanks in advance and I'm very jealous of your setup!

I just bought a 1991 5.0 gt the car I've been wanting since I was 16. Got it from my brother in law 41000 on it clean storage kept nothing has been done to it, completely stock. I'm just trying to keep it in that state. In other words I'm pretty new to the fox boy game but I love the car. I wanna do some slight upgrades but don't want to ruin it to where it Depreciates in value because I know people are wanting them again now days. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks buddy! I really appreciate the kind words 🙏🙏🙏. I am very hopeful that at some point this year we will be able to move more “freely” as our country right now is…. Well let’s just say it’s a long story 😩. That said - and on more of a positive note - I have decided that as soon as i can head south again, I am literally loading up and making the 2500 mile journey. I’m going to probably try and do the tour in the fall because that way I can hopefully hit a few shows i.e. mustang week, foxtober fest, etc. and make it worth the 5000 mile round trip 🤪

The weather stripping is hard to get perfect, for sure you need a spare towel and hand towels in case it rains. My 92 lx very leaked like a civil war submarine when it rained and made driving very dangerous. If the top motor does not work good luck finding a mechanic that can replace the hydraulic pump.

Hi I'm Intrested in a 1990 GT vert that I may go look at when the guy takes is out of storage. The car looks awesome but it has a rebuilt title on it and the price is Not bad either but the rebuilt title has me concerned. These cars are old now and I'm quite sure many have been in accidents at some time. I still will go and have a look at this car because the current owner said it was rebuilt 14yrs ago and looks like he has taken car of this car. It's black with white interior and looks very clean and straight..any tips when I go to see this car?

Haha no worries buddy - you’ll never get any judgement from me. There are two latches on either side of the upper roof line of both the drivers and passengers side. It’s right behind where the A pillar (windshield frame) meets the convertible top. They pull towards the middle/front of the car. Put another way, when you’re sitting in the drivers seat, look up and to the left and you should see them. Sorry - I hope that makes sense… 😉

Love your videos ! Question please. I've always loved trans ams and stands. Being 48 now, I see allot of 4 bangers and 6 bangers around. At low prices. Do you think from a re-sale perspective if I dropped I'm a 5.0 that the value would increase ? I'm debating buying one in another province that's mint but its a 4 banger. I'd oribably keep it for awhile after dropping in a 5.0 then selling it. I know lots of people are doing this... anyone actually made money by this ?
