Basically Kasparov plays the same principles in both the Spanish game (Ruy Lopez) and Italian game while playing as White. He moves the Knight from B1 to the King side to attack the Black's Kingside irrespective of however White castles.

This maneuver is named after Steinitz who used it in a classic game against Chigorin. In fact, it was used earlier by Staunton against Van der Lasa in 1853.

There's actually another great example by James Mason vs Winawer in 1882 of this maneuver that predates the Steinitz Chigorin match, but Mason might have gotten the idea from Steinitz in his game against Blackburne.

Excellent lessons Igor! I have played almost same way with white, but there are two differences. First one I move pawn b2 to b4 to attack black bishop, so no need to my bishop back immediately. Secondly I move Bc1 to Be3 and sacrifice with black bishop and the double pawn help me later on by opening f line.

I found out that aiming for the king this way is quite useful. My defence is a bit weak sometimes, so I got some ideas from this video. Playing something unknown or weird is also working in short time games.

I play the italian quite often, and I dont quite understand bb3. Wouldnt b4 also protect from the knight while also gaining a tempo and more space?

As always, Igor published another excellent opening on the Italian Game. I like this variation and play it oftenly. The only difference is after I move my Bishop to B3, I don't bother to castle. I begin relocating my Night immediately. It saves time and I castle afterwards.

I always favor bishop over knight. In some games, I've trap the rook against the edge of the board between my bishop & 2 pawns. I pretty much always hunt the bishop with my knight.

This is a cheat code for chess. Kasparov is truly genius. I watched this video on Friday. Three days later I played a casual game to see if I remembered it. Against a player rated 200 points more, black could do nothing. He had to sack his queen to stay alive for three more moves. I felt like everything was in preparation. If it were a rated game I'd probably be facing a ban.

I doubt Igor reads these but I'll write this as though he does. 1. How impressive is your English? It often takes a couples sentences or more before I can tell you are not a native speaker. I can usually tell in less than a sentence. 2. Your work ethic is so impressive. I think the most intelligent people have a few common attributes: Seeing from others perspective, endless curiosity, imagination and even a sense of humor. Three out of four isn't bad. lol I realize you are in a role. 3. The real reason I'm writing this is because of your masters in Psychology. I also have wondered for years why we do what we do. I've now been watching a ton of chess mostly to see how you all think. Hikaru's brain is incredible. I've seen him take a blundered queen then a second later realize the queen was blundered! I have studied us humans using a totally different method. This year marks my 44th archery season. I've been living and acting as a primitive person for that long and I finally had an epiphany about why we think like we do. In a nutshell, you must understand how other predatory think while stocking prey. We have evolved that method like a giraffe evolved his neck. Everything we own, do , and act is related directly to that. I would love to go into detail but youtube is all I have. I've never even had facebook.

theres a whole chapter on the suject by nizowitsch. his thinking was there are cases where a bishop can play that pin as is played commony by both sides in the the piano. he then gives some examples including some of capablancas games. nimzo basicly thought that putting the question to the bishop is dependent on the kind of pawn structure there is in the center. if the bishop can find no way to activate then put the question and or play g5. if the bishop has chances to awake then it can be a different game. this issue is one of nimzo's elements as taught in his book. like others have said here none of this is new. i think capa quotes a game of his own in his book crushing the enemy bishop's chances,. but relevent to this day. igor is just teaching normal stuff in a small lecture that is very usufull. i recomend looking at nimzos write up about when the bishop can come out ahead.
