This is the Shito Ryu version, yes? It's fascinating to see how it differs from the Shotokan version.

Yes, also different from Shuri-Ryu's version- much more snappy and less graceful and flexible.

I was thinking the same. I'm probably bias because I do Shotokan and this is my favourite kata but I don't think this one looks as good. He performed so good though.

This is Shitoryu Bassai Dai. This guy was world champion, he didn't get there by performing kata incorrectly. This Kata varies according to style, but it was the same as this in both Renbukan and Shukokai which are Shitoryu styles, I have studied both. I see a lot of power and style in this performance.

A rare sight. Finally someone who makes the moves in such a way that one would suppose that he thought closer of what they are for. That is actually what Kata should be for - but you rarely see it in tournaments.

It must be epic coming up with some dance moves , saying they are hundreds of years old, and contain hidden applications. Then having paying students where you go around moving their elbows or hands an inch and then having tournaments to judge who did the dance the best.

I thought It was a very well performed kata! Each style of karate has slightly different variations in their katas. This is different to the one I know but the pattern is very similar. Regardless Antonio was awesome! Explosive and controlled I would like to learn that version. People who rubbish other peoples disciplines are missing the whole point of martial arts and will always be lacking the spiritual side to Art.

@kaiftw you're right, in a street fight it makes no difference. but when performing bassai dai it does. i've been training for 45 years and lived for 32 in Japan. Trust me, you MUST move and land heel first when performing bassai dai. this is fundamental with shito ryu and goju ryu, but not shotokan. as bassai dai is shito ryu's "shite# kata it must be done the shito ryu way, which is heel first.

@xxbabybubbaxx that was not a terrible kata. it was also not the shotokan version of bassai dai. the way he performs some of the techniques is simply because he's doing a shitei kata (a list of katas the WKF has categorized for competition). if he wants to win, he has to perform the kata the way the judges want to see it done in a tournament. there are more karate styles out there than shotokan.

Movements may be taught differently from dojo to dojo, style and lineage, not to mention the Sensei's interpretation of the kata. There is no wrong move in martial arts, just not the way a certain style may perform the technique. As for the sandan and mandated time frame.... The experience you gain from being

Bassai dai doesn't mean "battering ram" - the "dai" just means "big" as opposed to "sho", which means "small", so there is a "bassai sho" sitting around in some kata curriculums. The typical translation, "To Storm a Fortress" seems in-line with "battering ram", but honestly, I don't know how we get that out of the kanji, batsu (抜) - "to extract or remove"; sai (塞) - "close, shut, or cover".
