One of the things i love so much about the channel is how it discusses many aspects of things. The traditional way to perform a technique, a modern version of it, other application of this technique and what we can learn from it, how we can avoid having to use it in the first place. in this video talking about chiburi you have shown techniques, some of the history behind them and how it can apply philosophically too, i like to think that chiburi is almost a symbolic thing, a movement that is literally removing blood, but also removing the anger, sadness, fear and intent from yourself and bringing you back to a balance. You mentioned how chiburi can apply to life, and living with purpose and kindness, and it reminded me of a quote from my favourite film "the last samurai" where Katsumoto says "To know, life in every breath, every cup of tea, every life we take, the way of the warrior, that is bushido" and although it may not be the most historically accurate interpretation of it, i think its a beautiful way to look at it. "Life in every breath"

Great video! Really enjoyed it! It got me thinking too. Couldn't chiburi be used as a possible metsubishi towards a second opponent, instead of just cleaning it before placing in the saya? Im gonna have to play. 🤔

Appreciate your opinion, sensei. The chiburi people keep doing in modern iaido today got too much unnecessary attention despite the fact it's just a spiritual action that replace the practical blood cleaning movement with a cloth, there are more things to focus on. When i do solo batto practice, i either use the Kaiten chiburi of Katori Shinto ryu or don't do any chiburi at all

The heika jodan promotets to retain hidden virtue, do things in accordance with way, even if no one sees it or knows about it. Virtue is one of the five foundations... So i think if one wants to live the way... Trying to retain this hidden virtue would add to that practise

the real true about chuburi is not only the blood , is more about to prove that the menuquis of the sword are intact for the next use of the sword.

I like The Budo Academy's explanation of chiburi better. It's not a literal shaking of blood off the blade, it's symbolic. It's an acknowledgement that you just took someone's life.

Yes. We have done real chiburi with pig's blood and the blood never quite ever fully flicks off. We always needed to physically wipe it off with a cloth. However, none of us were alive when it could have been a real thing, so it is best to be skeptical. I have seen older schools where chiburi was to actually shake excess blood off though before noto.

@@thedojomartialarts There are certain styles of iaido such as Hoki-ryu that don't perform chiburi. Keep in mind that it was believed that the soul of a samurai resided in the katana, chiburi is more of a mental and spiritual cleansing rather than an actual physical cleansing of the blade itself.

Heh I guess I'm one of the weaird modern day ronin I carry a katana with me when ever I go hunting, I have used it against 2 wild animals but I also use it to cut up my deer after I clean it out I make nice even clean cuts and after I am done I use a rag to clean off my blade before before I put it in the scabbard , then when I get home I take apart my katana and clean and oil the whole sword.
