if your larynx is habitually in a higher position, then it will be more challenging to keep it in a low position. But it is good to have options and with practice you can move your larynx in any way you want.

Thank you for this explanation. I've had choir directors trying to run exercises to help us open up the voice, but it never worked as well as what I am able to do after watching your videos. My throat has held onto tension for years and I'm just learning methods to try and help it relax and heal.
@RichieDoesStuff4 жыл бұрын
So I'm learning to sing, but I find that rapping helps relieve my throat tension for when I sing. For me I think it's because singing seems like I'm supposed to have a whole different voice for some reason. I understand that's not the case, but rapping helps cause it is my actual voice and it's warming up all my throat muscles really. In order to rap properly you have to just let your jaw almost hang with no tension and air has to flow smoothly through your throat and off your tongue. So if you are having trouble singing I would try rapping to warm up, but don't push your air out all rough and start yelling like Eminem or NF, those two artist know what they're doing and have been doing it for years. just let it flow nicely and eventually it'll help tension all around for singing as well
@healthyvoicetips4 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your suggestion. You are right rapping is like speaking and singing requires a little bit different muscle coordination.

You have such a pretty voice! I was just diagnosed with laryngeal dystonia and I've had it for 20 years. It's embarrassing when people ask me what's wrong with my voice. It actually makes me more anxious, which then makes my voice worse...

@healthyvoicetips9 ай бұрын
Using your voice is always a finding a balance. Therefore, I say to all my clients to focus on vocal effort. That is the best guide: listen to the muscles and if you feel you are doing too much, you are probably doing too much. Try to lessen the muscle effort and see if that feels better.

Guys, after this video, I was thinking over the way I speak... I work as an online teacher and it requires me to be sitting all dsy long and I often felt pain and throat tightness when I taught clssses sitting and I didn't when I was standing. Then, I saw that the main problem wasn't the way I was speaking, but the armrests of the chair. The armchairs were to high and made me rest my arms and adopt a crooky position. This position would tighten all my torso and cause the tightness. I hd suffered from everyday pain and hoarseness for 4 months and now I don't feel anything anymore. Thank you doc!!!

Why does your program not work for people that only experience vocal tension when singing? WIll these techniques still work? I'm pretty sure a major contributor to my vocal tension is gastrointestinal reflux.Sometimes my vocal chords slam down so hard I can't get any sound out. It's definitely worse if I don't take my PPI in the morning or eat fatty foods. Not sure if I need a vocal couch, a speech pathologist, an ENT or all three. I've already seen a GI specialist but the only thing they can do is prescribe PPIs which don't help completely.

Please tell me you are better..I have the same thing now for about 8 months and very depressed. I was diagnosed with vocal cord disorder as well!! My ent said it’s an injury to the vagus nerve basically. He thinks it’s the aftermath of Corona virus which I had a year ago

Have you seen an ENT for a proper voice evaluation. That would be the first thing I would recommend you do!

I’m a soprano but I am used to singing more mezzo range and I’m not comfortable with the upper register. My voice teacher has pointed out that I tighten up when I try to sing high notes. No matter how I move my mouth I can’t seem to fix it.
@healthyvoicetips Жыл бұрын
Mouth movement may not be the thing that adds to tension. What about the tongue, soft palate, head and neck anchoring and other things. Learning how to sing high is a learned skill and if it was easy everyone would be singing high with ease. It requires time.

I just need someone to give me correct exercises that'll help with my issues... 1) I feel like my main issue is when I go higher, I'm pulling my chest voice up? Or at least it feels like that so I don't think I'm able to transition to either a mix or even head voice. I have to switch to falsetto otherwise it won't work. So I don't know how to release this tension in my throat

A few ways to go through the break: add more head and neck anchoring (engage the muscles in your head and neck), tilt the larynx (make the sound sweeter or wimpier), decrease air (if you are pushing too much), or add oral twang to take off some pressure.

Thank you...time for me to release tension...I think I just need to get to know these areas...I always have tension when I sing.

You are onto something. You should not feel tension when you sing. Start getting to know your vocal instrument and ways to release tension when you use it.

Been feeling tight after singing for 4-5 hours after not singing for a few months... it still feels like someone is strangling me and the vocal cords feel "dry" lol (nothing wrong with the cords, no injuries etc. my neck is just really bad at releasing tension due to many years of bad neck posture). Still not sure if the tightness is caused by the larynx, the neck or the tongue.. or all three of them - but neck exercises (muscle strengthening) helps for a few minutes and so does "stretching" my tongue. I'll try adding the yawning on top of everything, hope this will be gone soon!

Building endurance after not singing for a few months can take some time. I suggest that you develop some daily exercises to improve endurance and strength in your voice and progressively increase the demands on your voice. Maybe you are asking your voice to do too much after such a long break. But it is possible to get your endurance back, it requires regular practice.

I will try this and practice this along with the larnyx massage. Throat gets tight when I'm nervous...or adrenaline is elevated. This was very interesting. I was able to do the yawn, and the most of the sigh....but when it came to pronouncing anything with an " H, "....the hyoid bone shot back up every time. So I have work to do. But at least this offers some help and gives me some direction. Thank you, Katarina.
@healthyvoicetips4 жыл бұрын
Hi Anthony, yes it is a good exercise to get control over your larynx. Also, you mentioned that your throat gets tight when nervous, so I would suggest some deep breathing exercises and some mindfulness exercises to deal with the nervousness. It is possible to control it but it takes practice.

ive always had pain when I tried to sing. I can sing in tune if I try but I dont sing ever because after a few seconds it hurts and I cant do it. Im going to work on this. It would be so cool if I could start to sing after 40 years haha
@healthyvoicetips Жыл бұрын
I would suggest speaking to a singing teacher. There is something that you do that causes the pain - maybe too much constriction or effort. A singing teacher can help with that.
