In this video, I reveal why your throat hurts when you try to sing, and what you can do to fix that! Watch now and learn!
My Throat Hurts When I Sing - What Do I Do? Ken Tamplin Vocal Academy
An old silly joke is: "Doctor, doctor, it hurts when I do this? What should I do?"
(Doc answers) "STOP DOING THAT!"
As simple and almost mocking as this may sound, it's quite true.
If you're doing something that hurts, whether it's your throat or another part of your body, it's obviously wrong.
For some weird reason, we seem to think the muscle groups around our vocal cords are different than other muscle groups in our body, when in fact they are the same (and may be even more susceptible and more fragile than other muscle structures in our body).
But because they are smaller, and have not been studied as much as other muscle groups, there is a lot of smoke and mirrors, snake oil, and silly superstition that surrounds the voice.
In this video, we discuss good vocal health and quality effective singing techniques to prevent injury and promote excellent vocal health.
If you are a singer looking for legit, hard to come by information, I think you'll find this video valuable.

The singing lightly which teaches me that my throat is open then adding resonance and practicing scales worked like magic. I now understand what it means for my throat to be open, ken tamplin is truly an awesome teacher. When I get my job I'm definitely signing up for his course.

Ken, I bought your course awhile back and I just wanted to share something here. I was not able to use your course after getting it, because my throat would hurt. I tried to figure out what was going on and I could never figure it out. Fast forward to a couple weeks ago and I found out from the doctor that I have hypothyroidism. Not only that, but I have a severe case of it that was causing swelling in my neck and face. It also was causing me to have difficulty breathing. It felt like I was always breathing through a very thin straw, and the harder I tried to get more air in, the more I would tense up. I’ve been taking thyroid medication for two weeks now and not only has my breathing improved drastically, but my swelling is completely gone and I can do all sorts of vocal exercises without that pain anymore. I’m so glad I finally figured out what was causing this issue for me and I just wanted to share that here, so maybe I can help somebody else with the same issue. If you have trouble breathing deeply or freely and are tired all the time, among other possible symptoms, then go see your doctor about your thyroid. Your thyroid affects a lot of different things in your body that are all unrelated to each other. So, if you have a lot of issues going on that seem unrelated and you can’t figure out what’s going on, it might be that. I hope this helps someone. It’s definitely changed my life already.

@@kentamplinHi Ken, very warm greetings from Scotland. I adore you and have watched you for years. I used to sing with the National Jazz Orchestra of Scotland however at the age of 28 I was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and you can imagine how it has affected my ability (not only to sing but to play my Trumpet). The hoarseness you speak of is what I’m experiencing almost as if when I’m singing higher notes it’s like my voice is stuck between overtones, (if that makes sense?) ENT have checked my vocal chords etc… and everything apparently looks good, however this hoarseness is really getting me down as is the pain when I try to sing now. I’m not formally or classically trained as a singer as Trumpet is my first instrument. I’d love to take your course but due to my poor health I’m worried that I may not be capable of completing it as everything revolves around my health now. I will try this as you have suggested I hope 🤞🏼 it may help. Any other tips? Obviously as a trumpeter I’m well versed in the diaphragmatic breathing. Any advice would be greatly appreciated as singing is one of the only things that can make me feel better. Kindest Regards Charlotte 🙏🏼💜☺️

@@applecharlotte1981 you should see a naturopath. Trust me, regular doctors just can't do some things because they are restricted by what they are taught to a certain extent. They do a lot of things good but some things they just don't know how to use some of the amazing properties that plants have because they are not trained to do so.

Being regular church going folk, singing was just a part of everyday worship but I did some real damage to my voice when I was the lead singer of a rock cover band in my teens. Our setlist would include bands like Rage Against the Machine, System of a Down, RHCP, HedPE, The Offspring...and the like. My throat would often hurt and I didn't know the balance between airy and throaty voice. I just wanted to imitate the sound coming out of my speakers I didn't know anything about compression and EQ back then. When James Labrie (Dream Theater) would sing a high note, his tongue would come out of his mouth and he was clearly doing what you were doing here. Being a silly/rebellious teenager I thought it looked uncool then but I wish I had realized then how important it was to learn how to sing correctly doing the techniques you showed here. Thank you!

Golden tips for beginners here. Luckily I have never been hoarse, not even once. Which means I am probably doing something correctly. Sore might happen, if I am overambitious with the extreme high range exercises. I have one of those personalities who easily get caught up in a process and never stop until the result is achieved. But I am learning how to mitigate this desire. The KTVA foundation is really good. Recently I got severe food poisoning and instead of 6 days of practise and 1 resting day I got 6 days mostly in bed and only 1 workout day. When I was good enough to stand up I restarted the program and the voice was still there! Had some issues hearing myself clearly after being sick, but the muscular strength was there as before. I went from bed to the workout. Even hit the C6 on the first day after being sick. So the KTVA course gives you a really strong foundation. If you do it correctly it will not let you down. It's rock solid!

OMG! This is SO spot on...once AGAIN...I remember a very simliar video ya did acouple yrs back, which REALLY resonated with all the tutorials Id interalized to date. At THAT time, I really wasnt "there". Most of of the vowel mods, use of the diaphram, really "getting" PING is KING, tongue placement, etc wasnt in muscle memory yet..All tunes had to be selectively "fixed" consciously. After my 3 recent surgerys, Im really battling hard to get my stamina back and likely OVER practicing ,almost daily BUT? hittin it for 3.5 hrs last night, using my lil gig set up LIVE, (which really helps) I think Ill be doing the same tonite! The un GODLY humidity here isnt even bothering me anymore.(been this way for weeks..lol). I remember some of the "unsavory" comments on some of those EARLY tutorials about your tongue and even tonsils>>LOL ,and some of the strange feqs resonating from your "exps"..LOL..I was laughin TOO ...at that time...NOW, I GET IT and realize when all your priceless techniques finally come together, automatically, PAIN/PROBLEM FREE singing is the result.😎

First of all wish you a welcoming hello to everyone, Is it too much of me to add an suggestion to the list he made ? ... i mean im not as competent so i dont wanna be rude or something but i think he didnt cover important one and its underdeveloped small muscles around the larynx or the vocal cords to be more precise... vocal cords are closed by muscles (to be exact ventricular folds) and its ableness to keep them at certain closure makes sure that the pitch and tone dont variate as well as the endurance of the singing/maintaning the healthy professional sounding voice for longer times but also how long can you sustain to sing without big brakes like when you have a long studio session or private karaoke session or live public karaoke session (this also has connection to the diaphragm endurance and how slow and steady can you keep it)... if you sound breathy or you dont, but you go breathier and breahtier while barely noticing it over time while you sing you should probably train those small muscles, so you have fewer hoarsness and vocal fatigue (singing breathy for longer times can hurt too, cuz it affects vocal folds with high volume of air and over time vocal folds get irritated and you could expirience hoarsness or vocal fatigue from it too)... this Ken Templin advice is awesome i just tought maybe you could use this hint for those that were quite as kids and spoken just occasionaly this could help out, for those who push strong breathe through troat and try to push for the high notes and want to be seen like they are really trying to get the notes but cant and sound thin and squicky and tense etc please listen to this guy he knows what he talks about for sure ! i hope you guys find this helpful and hopefuly Ken Tampling doesnt mind the suggestion :O :D Have fun and sound like a Pro ! I'm sure by now I'm probably recognized as 'that guy who likes Roy Orbison and has lots of bad questions' lol. Always love the tips and tricks videos! I remember when I first started trying music and I would ask teachers, students, musicians, and anybody else who would listen "how do you sing higher? What does it feel like and how do you work on it? I've noticed i have the habit of just kind of yelling louder rather than actually having pitch control." And everybody would always say "you'll know it once it happens." At this point I have the mindset of 'I've gone through huge improvement over the past couple of years but I don't know for certain if my technique is sound or if I'm doing it safely'. Your videos always help with that.

I don't have them when I'm asleep, but I get a blank space sometimes when I try to sing. Especially if I try to hold a tone or do even a small glide. I've been to an ENT to be scoped and went to speech therapy for several months. They think I may have a paralyzed vocal chord. If I put my hand on my neck I can physically feel my neck jump. I don't want to do botox because it doesn't always work so I'm trying to approach it by paying extra attention to the muscular movements in my neck, posture, and breath support. I tend to have some acid reflux at night so I elevate my head, too. Sorry this is so long, but maybe something will help you. It's very frustrating when I can hit a note dead on, but it quickly sounds like bad uncontrolled vibrato. Good luck to you!

so essentially, distortion is like putting super-strength fuel in a car engine and if it can't handle the excess power, you risk damaging it? in other words, distortion can be achieved safely over time as your vocal cords strengthen?

Yes.

@@kentamplin thank you. this video helped me tremendously as i do not have the strength yet to safely distort, but i will slowly incorporate the technique over time.

Hey Ken, I had laryngitis about a month ago and I still cannot sing like normal or use any distortion at all. My throat of voice box doesn't hurt at all and I can speak normal but my higher register is affected and my distortion/grit is highly affected, any tips on how to get my voice back?

Hey Ken, when I drop my tongue and open my throat more it seems like my tone changes drastically from what I want it to be. What's going on? It sounds a lot darker
