Fun fact! Sidney was a huge fan of Finnish Christmas casseroles and would make sure not a single speck was left in the dishes. However, she wouldn't even go near the Christmas ham. Idk what they put in that thing, but I always thought it was sus that my beagle that literally eats almost anything steered clear of it year after year xD

Funnies! In Russia we have a salad almost identical to rosolli, it's винегрет (vinegret). The differences are that you commonly have canned peas and pickles in it, but not apples or fish. And we never eat it with whipped cream, which surprised me, we just use sunflower oil as a dressing. Vinegret isn't particularly a new year (as in soviet union it became the main holiday and not many celebrate christmas in the post-soviet states) dish, it might appear on any celebration table, unlike Olivier salad which is a must have for the new year! On Wiki it says that rosolli might have been originating from Russia :^

It said on Wikipedia that the name rosolli comes from the Russian word рассол (rassol), which seems like a similar way of naming as the Russian name винегрет (vinegret), which comes from the French word vinaigrette... Seems like both wanted to name their beetroot salad with a foreign word.

Funny how KZbin tracks what they think you’d watch. You are the second vid about Finnish Christmas foods. I loved your presentation, very well done. I was trying to recall foods from my youth and which had a Finnish origin. The prune tarts were made with cookie dough, not with a pastry. It is hard to discern meat and potatoes as anything Finnish.

Kisseli can be translated as kissel.😊 I like finnish christmas food a lot, no doubt it's the best of all christmas food I tasted in several countries. And most of the dishes are very easy to make vegan so its extra good thing about them ❤. This year we had rosolli, sienisalaatti, laatikot, joulutortut, piparkakut, joululimppu and karjalanpiirakat 😊

very nice, thanks. I was raised such I eat what is put in front of me. If I don't like it I don't eat it. I know I like the turkey, ham, potatoes, corn, jellied cranberry, stuffing and pretty much most desserts! I also saw that porridge is equivalent to oatmeal, which I like. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and your loved ones, Kat. You mentioned Lutefish. I live in the Northern Plains of the U.S. and most of the people here are of Norwegian or other Scandinavian or Nordic ancestry. Lutefisk is served here in our region and if I'm not mistaken, it's a type of Cod fish preserved in salt and Lye, then rinsed to remove the residue and the fish takes on a gelatinous texture. You either like it or not. I've tried it with lots of drawn butter and it wasn't bad at all. I look forward to more of your videos after the New Year. I think I will go online and order the Vihreat Kuulat just to try as it looks very interesting.

Wishing you a Very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year Katya. 🎄🎅🤶 😁 Have those snowmen been drinking the brandy that was left out for Father Christmas? 🎅 😁 Is rice porridge anything like our rice pudding? Over here in the UK it is traditional to put a silver sixpence into a Xmas pudding for luck. I shall be having a Quorn family roast for Xmas dinner. It's like turkey for vegetarians. I also have a vegetarian Quorn ham roast. In Scotland and North East England we call Swede's 'Turnips' or 'Swedish Turnips'. They are quite unlike the the turnips that they have in the south of England. I also make sage & onion stuffing using thawed Linda McCartney sausages as vegetarian sausage meat. I'll leave the punajuuri for my sister. she loves it. I hate it. Why would you ruin whipped cream like that??????? 😲 No roast potatoes? I shall be posting a pipari recipe in the future. The joululimppu sounds nice. Here in the UK Christmas Day food would include: Turkey, Yorkshire puddings, roast potatoes, sprouts covered and sage & onion stuffing all covered in Bisto gravy. Then for tea there would be a Xmas pudding with either custard or brandy, mince pies, (there's no meat in mince pies), shortcake and lots and lots of chocolates. Everyone will pull a cracker, put silly hats on their heads and read one of the even sillier jokes from inside the cracker. 😁 You never said what you would be having for Xmas dinner Kat.

Hahaha lmao that's so funny, I think perhaps they have 🤣😂 Actually, I think it's probably the same thing? And yess I remember they had so many products made from Quorn in the UK when I was there! Hahah luckily for you, you can't really taste the punajuuri in the whipped cream xD No roast potatoes, just boiled :P My grandma makes most of the stuff that I mentioned here. Less fish dishes and she also makes spinach pancakes for my sister and I who don't eat the fish or ham. (it's not a traditional Christmas dish, but a family special I guess haha) Thank you so much for the long and insightful comment! I loved reading it! Then you can combine words: "saunakeskiolut" (a beer you have before, while, during or after sauna). Then "laatikko" plus "anoppi" and you get "anoppilaatikko".

I tried to translate "kiisseli" too and couldn't - it also came from Russia (the same as "rossoli", thanks @toffee__uwu for the comment below), and Wikipedia doesn't have an English page, Finnish page says "hapahko jauhopuuro, hyytelö" it's more liquid than jelly, usually it's made from fruits, water and potato starch to make it jellyish. our grandmas used to make it (usually when we're sick because they believed that hot kiisseli was very healthy, especially for the stomach)

Thank you for your video! In Lithuania our Christmas dinner is usually vegan + fish. Nowadays we include dairy and eggs, but no meat. We have kiissiel too, but it is drink, so its less solid. We also have something similar to rosolli too. In general, its lots of mushrooms, beetroots and fish. We also make poppy milk so kids sleep well afterwards 😂 usually it must contain 12 dishes, but we can count bowl of hazelnuts as separate dish 😂 Nobody is allowed to eat for whole day before dinner. Sweets and meat are allowed only next day

There are so many options and I'm so curious to know about it in other languages too but mostly when asking google you get the standards and nothing more or it's even the wrong translations.

I would compartmentalize ALL your work, by subject and tense, etc, and THEN submit yourself and your catalogue to the Finnish "Integration" service as a virtual instructor/trainer, A1 to Bwhatever. I'm trying to help English speaking Finns migrate to Finland, but honestly after three months of trying to learn the Finnish language, while being taught ONLY in Finnish, I've learned that this simply does not make sense, and is why so MANY "Americans" or "English speaking" Finns report so little success with the language "school," as it is, and many report failing the YKE at least once. How can a student learn grammatical concepts in Finnish, using only Finnish words? In my case, I do not "know" the ENGLISH descriptions of grammar tenses, so imagine trying to learn tenses in a "foreign" language? (Without resources like your channel)? In any case, spend the time to put together your work and market it. You should be working for Finland, as I described above. And being paid well for it. 2024 will be your best year yet!

In Finland the tradition is for people to usually spend Christmas with their close family members, I don't think I've heard of this open house concept here. People are quite private here xD
