Kate Bush once said in a BBC interview that she considered herself a writer first, then a singer and performer. It’s clear that she draws a lot from literary sources and is a brilliant storyteller. She sang ‘Wuthering Heights’ in a higher register to convey Cathy as a spirit. Cloudbusting is based on ‘A Book Of Dreams’ by Peter Reich. Both ‘The Sensual World’ and ‘Flower Of The Mountain’ were inspired by Joyce’s Ulysses. Please carry on reacting to the wonderful work of Kate Bush.

Hey there, Saeed!! I have finally succumbed and subscribed to your channel. I love your intelligent reading of complex music. You really have to do more Kate Bush. Can I suggest that you react to a song she wrote at the age of 13 and recorded at 16. I think it is one of the most exceptional songs of all time. It's called, "The Man with the Child in his Eyes"

So glad you enjoyed this, and connected with the spirit of it. Always a big reader, our Kate, a bit like yourself; she opened her own particularv window between literature and pop music. It was another trait that contributed to her unique artistic personality. Ulysses is a very dense novel, that has to be read with a dictionary, I found, but a masterpiece of modernist literature that was banned in the UK and Ireland at publication for it's somewhat frank treatment of conjugal love. Molly Bloom's monologue is a lengthy stream of consciousness, written without any punctuation or paragraphs, as she lies in bed next to her sleeping husband one evening, musing on the events of the day, and sex! A lot! Kate heard a recoding of the great Irish actress, Siobhan McKenna, reading a condensed version with great character, intelligence and humour - she really brought it off the page, and it's very bawdy in parts. I remember my father had an LP tucked away in the record cabinet, entitled Ulysses, which I put on the record player one day as a teenager, having absolutely no idea what it was. I was astonished by the candour of Molly's nocturnal ruminations, but empathised as I was experiencing nocturnal ruminations of my own by then. Surprised to learn that women could be similarly preoccupied, I felt several years older by the time Molly had drifted off to sleep! I knew Kate must have heard this record before I actually knew it. She wanted to use Joyce's text, but it was still in copyright at the time, and Joyce's estate refused to grant permission, being very protective of the great man's legacy. So she had to write her own Joycean monologue, although the hmmm, yesses are direct borrowings. However, when she decided to rerecord the track in 2011, she asked again, and this time received an affirmative. She renamed the track The Flower of the Mountain. To be honest ,I'm not sure Joyce's words worked as successfully in the song as the lyric Kate had written herself. Still, it was something of tribute to her stature as an artist by that time that the trustees changed their minds. Kate's mother was an Irish dancer, and as a result she was always very passionate about Ireland and Irish music throughout her career, so they think of her as one of their own over there. She's also very English, to my mind, in the bestt possible way; but of course embraced by listeners all over the world - including Holland, back in the day, if I remember correctly! Her most famous song inspired by classic literature is her debut single , Wuthering Heights, which is an astounding beast of gothic lit pop, which she wrote at the age of 18, and took to number 1 in the charts at the age of 19. Her youthfulness can be heard in her voice, though maybe not in the way you might think, it's not a timid performance; but as an artist she arrived fully formed, and unique, and that's how she carried on, always, for the next 35 years of her recording career. She has influenced many artist that came after, although she remains _sui generis_ . Lots to explore if you are so minded. You're a good reactor, you have a keen ear, and your face is like a projection screen for whatever is going on in your mind. Have you ever acted?

Kate is an extremely talented artist not only does she compose the music and lyrics she also produces her own music, she is also trained in dance and mime and choreographs her own dance routines in her videos she also quite often co produces her videos. she did not really take off in the US until recently it may be that the US tends to be in general more conservative were Music, Movies, Theatre and Literature are concerned than Europe and the UK but of course there are many exceptions to that statement on both sides of the pond .
