I'm Canadian and I can say with a fair bit of confidence that there is no other nation in the world who looks at American politics and thinks, "Boy, I wish we had an electoral college." It's hard to explain how it works, and it's nigh unto impossible to explain WHY it exists to begin with. On top of that, as stupid as it is in theory, it's even worse in practice, producing results that the majority of Americans don't want and that put people into power who do real harm to the country.

@themaggattack
@themaggattack Ай бұрын
From Wikipedia: Reply guy is an internet slang term for someone who excessively responds to social media posts, often in an annoying, condescending, or overly familiar or flirtatious manner. Reply guys are often men, often have few followers of their own, and tend to respond to posts by celebrities, those with large follower bases, or women. The phenomenon has been called an example of benevolent sexism. Ambivalent sexism is a theoretical framework which posits that sexism has two sub-components: hostile sexism (HS) and benevolent sexism (BS). Hostile sexism reflects overtly negative evaluations and stereotypes about a gender (e.g., the ideas that women are incompetent and inferior to men). Benevolent sexism represents evaluations of gender that may appear subjectively positive (subjective to the person who is evaluating), but are actually damaging to people and gender equality more broadly (e.g., the ideas that women need to be protected by men). For the most part, psychologists have studied hostile forms of sexism. However, theorists using the theoretical framework of ambivalent sexism have found extensive empirical evidence for both varieties. The theory has largely been developed by social psychologists Peter Glick and Susan Fiske.

A working class trans woman went viral for her "very demure, very mindful" skits, immediately some random dude bought the copyright/trademark so they could cash in on it and now she can't sell any merch, etc. because of it. But it's a wider issue too, a lot of popular culture in the west comes out of minority groups like the LGBTQ+ and/or BIPOC communities. They then become fashionable/trends and are taken over by the mainstream, often losing/undermining the original meaning. See also: afro hair styles that are deemed "unprofessional/unpresentable" then become the hot new trend when adopted by white celebrities - but still unacceptable for working class peeps of the culture it's stolen from in their day jobs.

Electoral college description is false ...... (love the show, but I have to "speak truth"). Some states were big in population and others were decently sized in size but not population. A state like Kansas is pivotal to the country but based on the population, it has absolutely no voice. It was only a way to allow balance in "life styles" between states and not just population density. As a native Coloradoan, we already were pretty forgotten but without the electoral college, only California, New York, Florida, Texas and Ohio would matter .... can you imagine an election cycle where those were the only people they Presidents were appealing to ???
@Templar462
@Templar462 Ай бұрын
incorrect. it absolutely was to maintain the institution of slavery and the control of white southern land owners. You are trying to ascribe modern justifications that weren't present when the electoral college was created. It's not about states with low populations, it's about states that were dependent on slaves making up the majority of those populations, who were not allowed to vote. Kansas, California, Colorado... did not exist yet. Guy's explanation of the electoral college was factual, and only history-denying conservatives who believe in unpopular policies they know won't get them elected, continue to espouse this made up fear of "majority rule" in predominantly rural states. Like nearly everything truly broken in this country, it's STILL about slavery. (fun fact, go look up how long conservatives have been yelling about "socialism" and take a guess where that comes from!) And hold on, did you just try to speculate on "what if an election was only about making an appeal to specific states"? You mean kindof like how there are only a handful of "battleground" states that matter NOW, and every politician runs to Iowa for the early caucus and pretends to love corn for two weeks? Are you kidding with that nonsense?

@@Templar462 * I have voted Democrat for many years and will likely continue to do so * I know American history decently well (but wouldn't call myself an expert per se). * I used Colorado as an example of population to size. * New Hampshire, Vermont, Maine would never ratify the consequences if it gave e away total control to highly populated states. * IIRC it was Franklin who "borrowed and amended" a form of government from the Indians to find a compromise to ratify all the states. Yes, the issue of slaves was highly relevant (as it was for most of American history) but absolutely not the only purpose, AT ALL. * your revisionist, cancel culture, 10 minutes of an Onion Article is ignorant and literally dangerous. I used Kansas as an example because that's farm country. Something New York needs. But why should they have Zero voice compared to New York when there literally no way to attain population density. * Yes, the battleground states get the most attention but look at the specific states I referenced (totally in jest .... for the less informed .... you, that means as a joke or light heartedly), those states are particularly non representative. Though the focus is on battleground states, that's only because the politicians have concern on the whole country instead of blowing off 95% of the area, in land space. I only responded because of your pompous, think your smarter due to your ignorance drove me crazy and needed correcting. Otherwise, I don't "internet argue", so, vent whatever, wherever you want, IDC ... Read a book (not the onion and the huffpost), learn some stuff, THEN ope. So your theory is 5 states deciding on who would win the election? Sounds pretty much like what is happening now. The current system disenfranchises people to vote that would vote differently than the majority in their state. I live in a Red state but am very liberal. In the end my vote means nothing nationally because this state will never be blue. Now maybe more people in my situation would vote in elections if their vote actually mattered.
