The audience engagement with this song gives me goosebumps. She can’t see them through the lights, everyone is staring at the ceiling to see her and yet she feels like she’s making eye contact with every single person in the room. EVERYTHING about this performance is perfection.
@WickedMalady4 жыл бұрын
I was at the audience and actually you could see her very well in front of you if you were on the sitting area because that area was already much higher than the stage. You could see her way better than any other show on the final, and I think she got close enough during the spinning part that she was able to go through the lights and actually see the people. It isn't seen in the video but in real life it's without the space effects and it looks so awesome because she comes super close to the audience at the seats, it felt like she was right in your face and you could almost touch her even though she was far. It was a very magical experience, the video version is like 5% of how amazing it was to watch this in real life, it had the most audience engagement in the whole show. But for the people who were on the standing area super close to the stage, yeah they had to look up, but they were only a very small part of the whole audience.

Kate is an effing legend. I don't know how many times I've watched this. Let's talk about it: 1) the song first - it may be polarising, but it has enormous emotional range as well as vocal range. The lyrics are brief but they discuss the journey out of depression, triggered by her own realisations about post-natal depression after the first of her son. She and her husband Keir have refined that down to simple words describing fundamental ideas (as befits Eurovision), emphasising the journey back to life and out into space, and married that to a soaring lift-off half-way through the song, and a joyful, transcendent ending. There are so many musical ideas crammed in here, right down to the careful construction of the harmonies, that it does need repetition to 'get' this song - although clearly the sing-a-long crowd at the venue didn't have to hear it too many times to latch onto the chorus. 2) the delivery. It's not just that it's pitch perfect, or close as, and delivered on top of a long pole. It's her perfect control. If you watch some of the more informed reaction videos, you'll see the various 'vocal coaches' raving about the movement between her head voice and her street voice, but it's more than that. Her microphone technique is superb. Her facial expressions. Her breathing. She's not just a classically trained pop/alternative singer on a stick, she's a real professional. Close your eyes, forget the staging, and listen. 3) the staging. Have you ever seen something so breathtakingly bold? At the national final in Australia, it blew us away, even though it was a static presentation. Here, on bendy poles that she had to learn to perform on to a level of confidence where she could sing and get the choreography right without compromise, the song takes off and blasts us to space. There are plenty of 'why didn't she win? comments here. Forget them. The winner was a great song, and so was Norway's. It's not *ever* about who gets the most points, it's about what you bring into the world to make it a better place. Kate's song and performance were on another level, and will be remembered in a different way, which is why she won the artistic prize. Once seen, never forgotten. Legend, Kate, absolute effing legend.
@JC-pg3cy4 жыл бұрын
she has amazing vocals and pitch. She handles herself so eloquently up there on the pole. I'll admit, the first time I heard this song I didn't like it, but then I gave it a a few more shots and now I'm obsessed! There is so much to like about this song! I then listened to the Acoustic version and WOW. All her other songs are magnificent. Love love

The moment it was announced we''d get to compete I always hoped that someone would be smart enough to say hey Kate and Keir show us what you've got. I've been watching ESC pretty faithfully since I accidentally watched it at some party back in 2007, and I never thought any song would be able to break through the nostaligia of some of those songs from back in the day, but I honestly think this is one of the best songs ever to come out of Eurovision. I mean, we all know it's supposed to be some cheesy arts showcase, but this is genuinely really really good, and I can't believe it didn't win.
