Wow! You’ve found an author whose schedule is almost exactly like yours!!! Awesome! I love the tracker you created (based on hers). I like color. :D I track words in a similar chart, but my other daily things are checked off on my to-do list (part of my Journal). However, during pandemic, I don’t get in-person piano lessons and I feel like my music time is suffering, I’m going to try a similar dual chart to include dogs, piano, …sweeping the floor…and … dishes. :( (Don’t judge me, I’m old! LOL) Great video!!! 30 minutes sprints are hard for me, too. I’m best at 20 or even 25, but by then I need to get up and stretch and pamper the pooches. 1,500 words a day seems to be very comfortable on my current vampire project. And I am also working on being kinder to myself. Thanks for sharing!

In my own writing, I start with my loose plot outline and the main character summary. The two usually show up together. Once I get the general plot outline together I start writing. By “writing”, I mean anything and everything to do with the story, including new parts of the world that the character will interact with. That usually also brings forth support characters, tertiary characters with bit parts, setting ideas, descriptions of all of the previous things and the like. By the time I get the majority of that done, I’m at work, where my job allows me to sit for eight hours alone with my laptop, my iPad Pro, and my books for note taking. Usually in that time period, I’ve completed a chapter or two along with any needed world building/magic system stuff. By the time I’m headed home, I’ll need to make revisions to my plot- but I’ll normally continue to follow my story line until I reach the end of my plotted narrative. My process is still a bit messy, but it’ll get better the more I work on it. I’ve recently incorporated Hemingway into my early editing process. I used it for early line edits of the first draft and I really like it. Showing complex sentences, passive voice, adverb usage and such helps me clean up the early structure, though I get caught up and sink A LOT of time into its use. Anyway, I love the videos. You’re adorable as you passionately gush over the things you love to do. It’s endearing.

I do really like her routine, I think I could take a lot of notes from it and put it into my own routine. I think its super important to just keep the routine and then as you go it'll get easier and you'll get more done. At least for myself if I do at least one 20 minute sprint everyday, my word counts are higher, but if I take a break for a few days my word count drops when I start up again.

I once read a study that summarized the maximum that any one person can be focused on solely one task is their age in minutes - I’m 28, so my maximum attention span is 28 minutes, for example. That helped me feel less frustrated that I didn’t have the discipline that veteran writers have - they’re at higher levels than us, that’s all.

And I think my productivity has gone up in the last two days because I want to get that word count in. Does that make me me more output driven overall? I don't really have specific word goals per project but if I'm going really well and I see I'm close to another thousand, I keep going until I get there. Also, what about Toni Morrison for you next I tried writing like or Holly Black?

This sounds like such a good routine! I currently don't have a set daily routine when it comes to writing, but I have recently designated Friday as my main writing day. I work Monday thru Thursday, and I'm usually splitting my weekend time between my side hustle and housework. Friday has become the only day of the week where I can truly dedicate my time to writing. I'm off work, it's the day I regularly Skype with my co-author, and I've recently started a habit of emailing her on that day after our Skype sessions (or just sometime that day) to make sure our notes are up to date on both ends. I do, of course, want to write more than once a week, but right now I'll take what I can get! Meanwhile, I'll figure out other ways I can incorporate writing into the rest of my week. Sounds like you really clicked with this routine. Maybe instead of 30 minutes, set a time for your sprints that's your actual sweet spot? But other than that, you could easily stick with this one if you wanted. I say if it works for you, go for it! 😊

As much as I want to say I'm output driven its not the case same with the process. Somedays no matter how long I sit with my notebook or laptops I can't make the words work. Other days once I start I can't stop until I lose the momentum with the story because for lack of outlining or I can't get the emotion or feels from the scene. I don't think beining a linear writer helps me but its something that I'm working on. Unless a scene comes to mind that is 100% undeniable going to be necessary to the story they won't get written out of order. I do make notes about the scenes that come to mind a couple sentences worth but it's all subjected to change but most of the time they sit in my mind marinating. I completely went off course with that. Opps🤷♀️
@katw55924 жыл бұрын
What do you think of V.E. Schwab's writing routine? I like it and I get the whole "do the business stuff thing first" angle of hers. I think that's the best advice. Also this sentence: "But I’m just one author, and an author with a notoriously bad habit of shucking my routines, lurking on the internet, and going for a wander whenever work gets hard" is probably the best (and most relatable) one of the entire article you linked. Are you more "process" driven or "output" driven? Do you wish you were the other? I'm definitely a mix. I like seeing at the end of the day that I did something number-wise, but I also love ticking off items on my to-do-list. I think I fall more on the Process side of things. Who should I try writing like next? Christopher Paolini (author of the Inheritance cycle and To sleep in a sea of stars) maybe? He has a KZbin channel but I don't know if he shared his writing routine. And maybe Jim Butcher?

What about giving yourself 5-10 minutes in the thirty-minute sprint to plan your actual writing sprint? Or, can you consider a 25 minute writing sprint with a 5 minute break as a "sprint" block? I love this video series. :D

I just started this video so I’m not sure if you mention this, but one thing I found out about V.E. Schwartz is she writes her novels out of order, which is something I do and though I was super weird about. I cannot sit and write from beginning to end. I get struck with ideas and scenes from book two of my planned series and I have to write that while it’s fresh in my mind. I looked it up online to see if I was crazy or doing something wrong and found that she does the same, which made me feel better. Edit: she said rainfall in headphones. My preference is crackling fire with a snowstorm to block everything out, but I only recently started this, so we’ll see if that changes in the summer.

I can't just do 30 minutes at a time and I like word counts for my sprints so I know what's I'm finding easy to write and what's I'm struggling with. I'd like to see, and I'm not sure if you could find any information on this, but some of the mid-list romance novelist. Kelly Klepos, Alona Andrews, Shannon Drake. IMO, it's stupid to beat yourself up over how well you're writing one day. If I sit down to write and the words aren't coming, it's a waste of my time to force it. I'd be better of watching youtube or taking a nap than forcing myself to write when it's like pulling teeth. Make yourself try, but allow yourself to quit without judgment. I track words, or I should say I track how many words I put in per hour, so I really track time. Time is finite. It should be seen a resource. I try to use it wisely. I try to write about 2 hours a day when I'm drafting, or more if I feel like it, if the words are flowing it's stupid to stop yourself, the next day they might not be flowing as well. I generally get about 2500-3000 words a day. I only work on one project because I'm a pantser and my gray matter is where the book is stored, I don't want to mislay it by working on other projects. It just doesn't work and makes everything slower to get back into that flow again, see, still worried about time. If we all remembered how precious it is, we'd all be better off.
