Hi, Good luck on your thru-hike! The 'crows' you mentioned are actually ravens - they have a distinct and different vocalization from crows, and in the desert they are the predominant corvid species.

This is why you need to learn to use and carry paper maps. In the event your electronics don't work/break/lose charge etc.

Does the PCT have blazes like the AT? It seems that there are iffy places and it would be nice to have bright red blazes to mark places where the trail curves thru the desert. It is really easy to get lost off the trail there. Blazes with an N or S to mark the direction would be a great safety point. Too many people lost and disappearing or just momentarily confused. The AT has white blazes. The PCT could have Red Blazes, and the CDT could have bright orange blazes. Is that a good idea? If a garmin gets lost and a person has to depend on the blazes, it would be good to have them. Just a suggestion.
@KateCloud5 жыл бұрын
No actual blazes out here but there are occasional PCT plates & stickers on posts. The trail is pretty well beaten but you can always use Guthooks on your phone to make sure your on the right track when in doubt.

Things get even worse when hiking the CDT. Harder to see the cairns and a lot of the people I've followed on that hike (Dixie last year and currently, Night Crawler have done some bushwhacking looking for the trail). As these trails become more popular the addition of blazes might just be a thing that gets done. Takes a lot of time, planning, and volunteers to accomplish that, though.

The disaster was the lack of a power cord ? That ended up working out and you camped in a beautiful shady area so not a disaster at all. I would have shucked my pack and laid down in that river for a while. It looked so inviting. Doing good, hike on ! These videos of the PCT make me want to section hike in Cal. instead of the east and the AT (harder to do living in NH but much more inviting and much easier on this old body).

Another great video. I am glad that you are using an umbrella. It makes sense for sun and rain. Enjoy the easier trail, later it gets harder. Are you using "Feather" as your trail name this year? Good Luck, Rick

The tech world promised us a wireless world. It hasn't happened as far as I can tell. Electronics use to be built with cords attached. Now not so much. Great scam. When they were attached rarely was one lost. Occasionally they would fray but a little electrical tape would fix that. Now that we lose them, oh boy, we get to buy another. Love the wireless world.
