Can Professionals Use Lightroom CC?! *EXPLAINED*

For Lightroom CC, turn off sync (by clicking the cloud icon on top right), import your photos just like you would in classic, cull the bad ones out, then turn sync back on. No need to have all initial imported photos automatically upload to cloud...

I feel the core of this video was CC is for beginners & LRC is for the pros. It’s worth mentioning that you can deliver professionally edited pictures in CC just fine. I actually prefer and use CC 100% of the time. I tried downloading LRC and using it and I wasn’t even incentivized to learn. I felt like I downloaded software from Windows 95. It looks and feels dated and those little nooks and crannies you mentioned play no role whatsoever in the end result which I (and perhaps millions of our fellow photographers) can deliver. Many of the talking points sounded a lot like personal preference; also, you can turn sync off with just a few clicks. Hope this helps for those reading through comments. At the end of the day, I want easier workflows and more intuitive designs: CC gives me that. 🤷🏻‍♂️

I totally agree, I feel pressure that I should be using Lrc if I want to be a pro photographer and CC is for amature/beginner photographers. I just can't get into the interface of Lrc. It's got such a dated and convoluted feel. I think I'll stick with CC for now.

As only a part-timer, I completely agree. Lightroom CC is handy for occasional edits but for a workflow of 1500+ edits, (often shooting in raw) I tried Lightroom CC and it was dire. Classic allows me to run through my shoot, rate my edits, dump the 1stars into a delete folder, do global changes for the rest in terms of look, style, 5:7 format (for example), then run through the remaining files quickly (ish) and crop, edit, and output. For studio shoots (hobby only) it's different but ethos remains. Once you are looking at 1000+ files from a gig or event (yes I overshoot probably) then LR classic is by far the better option for me.

In the meantime LightroomCC has Calibration it is to find under the three dots beneath the side panel . You open a picture go to the side panel then go down click on the three dots and tag calibration

Hi Katelyn! In response to your comment about "the girl with 112,000 pics on her iphone!" My husband and I have always been extremely anal about our family photos and how we save them! It's kind of our hobby! All of our digital photos (and older photos that have been scanned) resided on an external hard drive, carefully categorized and sorted documenting our 40 years together. We recently went to a NAS (Network Attached Storage) so that we would have our own personal cloud that is regularly backed up to preserve our most important memories. Any pics taken with cell phones as well as the ones I take with my DSLR are saved here. I know this isn't for everyone (he's the tech guy in the family), but it beats having so many photos sitting on your iPhone!

That’s a huge task that I would eventually like to accomplish. Last year we were hit by a tornado and we are lucky that we managed to keep our hard drives. We are lucky to have a house at all and to be safe but after that I was super happy that our main computer and external drives were safe. I have three external drives that I’m supposed to be rotating through and keeping at least one of them at a family members house but even though that was the plan I never follow through on it. Did you go with a pre-made NAS or set one up yourself with an old computer type thing?

@@kore996 wow! A tornado is my worse nightmare! Lol…I was scarred as a child by the Wizard of Oz! Ours is a pre-made system (Synology). But we have no off site storage. Something we definitely need to think about!

@@sheilahancock2976 ya we have some cloud storage but not for everything and that’s only because it was included with another membership. It can be time consuming and can get expensive to have every base covered. These are just family photos and videos for me and I’m not a professional in any way so I can see how things can get quickly out of hand for professionals but I guess the advantage is being able to justify the cost since it’s a business. Maybe I should find a way to have a favourites folder for backing up and not an entire family history if that makes sense.

I do sports photography for a school and have filled the cloud in on week. So, I’ve started Lightroom classic and a dual dock OWC with two 6 tb drives for now. I like Lightroom Classic and have found it much better.

Great video! I use CC for my family photos. Basically, my iPhone photos gets automatically synced and I upload images from my camera to the iPad. I then have access to those photos and can edit on the go and share. Once a week, I’ll download the edits on my Mac and store those jpegs on Classic so I have a database of my final edits. I also make an album on Google photos and iCloud to have a cloud backup and to share. For my professional work, I use Classic and process and export everything there. With iPhones being more prevalent, it’s important to incorporate CC into the workflow to understand how it works. I found this works great for me and I’m not stuck being a computer editing my family photos.

I use both, import to Classic, selective sync my most recent project to CC, cull and do most editing on my iPad or iPhone, it all syncs back to Classic, one very important thing to note, I sync previews only to CC, this allows me to work faster and more efficiently on my iPad or iPhone. Syncing the full resolution images takes way too much space and would be really slow to download to my devices if I'm remote and using cell service. Plus CC doesn't have all the tools.

I started with LCC and wish I had started with LrC. I love the cloud based version as someone who uses multiple devices but like you mentioned, editing on LCC feels half hazard. I feel like LrC forces you to learn the ins and outs of editing. Making the switch is difficult especially when doing event photography but it's def a goal especially after watching this video.

Very helpful video! I'll tell you what pushed me back to Classic - when I started shooting RAW for almost everything. The larger image files are just too much to sync "full time" like that, and Adobe's online storage is too expensive long term. This was also around the same time I started shooting paid gigs again - you're absolutely right, high volume events are much better handled by Classic (you can't have multiple catalogs with CC). Backups are easily handled with synchronized drives, and we can always add a cloud backup service like Backblaze or similar. I still use Lightroom CC as a secondary editor, in conjunction with Classic - I have a few "sync" folders designated in Classic that push instantly to CC / mobile. I use this for mobile image culling, and social media content needed on my iPhone. Best of both worlds for $10 per month! 🤓

I'm contemplating switching to LrCC and found your video very helpful. I was a little disapointed that Calibration didnt appear to be editable despite being a part of some of my presets. However i have stumbled upon calibration tool in LrCC. Don't know if someone has picked this up already - haven't read all the comments. It's an option through the 3 dots on the toolbar to the right. Maybe they (Adobe) have added it through an update?

Could not agree more with Katelyn on how using LrClassic when you want to get serious about your editing. I started out with LrCC because I thought it was a no brainer to be able to use it in my laptop or my phone. But as I grew in my business and my editing skills I realized I needed to have better control of my storage and the better editing power that comes with Classic. Switching over was a challenge, definitely confusing. But I wish I would have started with classic from the beginning! I do still use LrCC to do quick edits for Instagram, definitely convenient for that!

Hello and thank you for the helpful video Katlyn. I have been using LR5 for a long time. Just bought an R6 so have to upgrade so to edit RAW from that new camera. Would automatically go to the classic however, now you have to purchase that in a bundle with PS which I do not want or need.... at $20 per month. That does not make me happy with Adobe. If I want to save $10, I can go with cloud based but I do not want to downgrade from "classic". I'm a hobbyist and since I'm coming from a stand alone LR5.... paid for a long time ago, now to pay $20 per month is an issue. Seems if I want the same editing experience, I have to pony up the 20 bucks a month. Shame on Adobe.

If only Adobe gave Lightroom CC a new name, it makes it SOOO confusing trying to find tutorials and help. I shoot in both 35mm Film and Digital and would like to use a workflow with Adobe bridge (to add metadata) to 35mm film photography and lightroom CC - its frustrating that Bridge does not seem to integrate with Lightroom CC as I can see. If LR CC worked with Adboe bridge it would really help with 'overshoots' and sports/wedding photographers as the basic cull and meta data could be added in Bridge, then main edits and library storage in LR cc. The main downside to CC I feel is that its automation of tagging & presets ability to add metadata is poor and clunky - hence why a Lightroom CC and Bridge integration would be amazing!

Hello, I was a film photographer until 2018 when I started my Wedding/Events/Portrait/ photography business, so, I didn't knew which Lightroom to use, I tried Lightroom Classic and it was so confusing, especially the organizing part (Library) that I started use Lightroom CC because my Account was a 15 TB Cloud. Know after 4 years I have a workflow that uses LCC by year, I select the best RAW files at the events when I take the pictures (when I have a calm moment) even if I don't do that on the spot, I rate in camera the RAW files so then I transfer only the in focus, the kind of good and the best directly to LCC. In the end of each year I download all the files and store them in backup Google Drive and in a SSD. Regarding the "develop" differences, because I started in LCC I'm used to what it has, and it's being updated with new tools, so I'm cool with LCC but I understand that if I started sooner editing digital RAW photos maybe I was on the LrC camp hehehe.

I recently tried Lightroom Classic after having been using Lightroom CC on my iPad Pro and Macbook for the last couple of years. To me, Classic just seemed very dated in its interface, so when the trial period expired I went back to CC. I do take thousands of wildlife photos, but my workflow has been to delete from Lightroom after finishing editing. I can't see the point of keeping a library of very large RAW files. After editing I retain JPG's stored at two different locations in the cloud, as well as on Macbook hard drive. I can't see I will ever edit extensively enough again in the future, that I need to retain the RAW. I can see that photographers that have grown up, or been trained on Classic, will prefer to stay with what they are familiar, although continued firmware updates to CC mean there is very little that can't now be done in either with slightly different workflows. Can't the stylistic adjustments shown in Classic not be done using Presets in CC?

Unpopular opinion, but I don’t feel that Lightroom Classic actually possesses significantly more editing power over CC. Depending on your work, things like the color calibration and tonal sliders can be convenient to have, but I really don’t find them making or breaking anything. I also have felt like Classic’s generated masks are actually sloppier than CC, and I use masking a lot, so that’s problematic for me. CC is more than enough for editing, and I think it’s just hard for people to let go of the system they’ve used for the past decade more than anything.

Do you happen to know if there's a quick way to transfer photos as layers in Photoshop, if there's the ability to selectively change colors for chosen area (the entire color mixer, not just limited settings like temp, tint, vibrance, and saturation as in the case of masks in LMobile), and if there's the capability to remove objects through AI (not just minor imperfections) and the ability to select objects with a brush to create a mask (again, with AI assistance, rather than manually outlining)? @@radosawrezler1551 If you are talking about moving to Photoshop then it is a far more powerful tool, but more complex. I'm looking at switching the other way to LR mobile to be less focussed on editing - more the images although LR CC still has alot of power if needed. If looking at Photoshop i would recommend looking at TK9 Actions Panel - a toolkit for photographers with alot of potential for creating and layering masks, and a lot of backup through clear tutorial videos. Not sure if this answers your question. Hope it helps.

I just found a grat video on that issue with a solution where you basiacally open a image in LrC set on calibration to 100%% then let the image sync to LR and create a preset from the Adobe Color for that calibration slider. Since that works I wonder why the sliders are not there since the calibration works?

The one thing I like when using Classic which is not available on LrCC is that you can’t use plug-ins. So for example I use a special Flickr Export plug-in (the Adobe built in Flickr export syncs the photos. So when the photos are removed from your catalog they get removed from Flickr. So I found one which allows for Export and then it doesn’t care what happens in the catalog after that). I can’t use this plug-in on LrCC. So for this I solely work in Classic.

I´m nót a professional but i have been photograping for more than 30 years. I own most of minolta ´s best lenses and several zeiss top lenses paired with a a99 sony. I would never use a smartphone to edit my pictures (mostly shoots of classical concerts and harmony brass big band), I´ll take never more than 100 pictures. Would you recommend lr cc or lr classic ?

For me, the standard light room works better because I have a little bit of dyslexia and I actually struggle with the menu system and all the drop-down menus. In the classic I find the standard light room much easier to use. I find it much easier to navigate and work out what I’m doing using a mouse, then drop down menu is all the time with very small print as well. Makes it hard. And yes, I’m a professional photographer

When I started with Lightroom, I wasn't aware there were two versions. It was only when I started looking at KZbin videos that I realized this, with the result I had to look hard for the panels they were using.

The color calibration is on LrCC though. There is also a panel in the tone curve that allows you to tweak somewhat what you can do like the sliders in LrC.

... and tone curve correction too... you have to make some new insights about Lightroom CC, everything is there, the only thing I miss is the use of Plug-Inns. I use a workaround by going to Photoshop use the plug-inn there and go backt after saving to Lightroom CC, greets from Guus from The Netherlands

Color calibration isn’t available on CC version. however once you apply calibration on the photo, and move it to CC version. Effect is still on the photo. If you really want calibration on CC version, that’s how you work around it.

Thanks for the information. I abandoned "Lightroom CC" as a toy, and what you've shown us here hasn't changed my mind. I have over 300,000 photos in my Lightroom Classic library. Without some kind of migration tool, there's no way I'll be moving to Lightroom CC. If and when I'm forced to migrate off Lightroom Classic, I'll be looking strongly at migrating to Darktable. Adobe Creative Cloud is the last application still tying me to Windows. Everything else is either web based or has a Linux equivalent. I haven't made the transition because of the effort involved. If Lightroom Classic goes away at some point, I believe that'll be the the impetus necessary for me to finally abandon Adobe CC, and Windows.

When I downloaded Lightroom cc several years ago, I found it almost impossible to find Lightroom classic on their site at the time and didn’t even know there was a difference until I had already purchased Lightroom cc. The main con for Lightroom CC depending on who you are, is that you HAVE to pay for your cloud storage. And depending on the option you take (obviously depending on the amount of pictures you take), you could be paying up to $2000 per year or even more

First off, thank you for this video! I truly appreciate it!! Secondly, I have wanted to upgrade to Lightroom Classic for a while now, but I am having a hard time finding it on Adobe's website. I see that they still advertise for it but when I go to the "Buy Now" tab it only talks about purchasing Lightroom CC.. Where else can I find Lightroom Classic? Am I missing something? 🤔

I was using Lightroom until they stopped providing the one-time purchase option - I refuse to rent software! This spring, with a new Mac and a new Camera, I finally needed replacement for my LR6, and went with CaptureOne (21 and 22). After now half a year of using CaptureOne I just regret I didn't switch earlier: colour management tools are so much more professional in CaptureOne - I am used to grade movies in DaVinci Resolve, and always wanted all these fancy tools it provides for my picture editing software, too - with C1 I have these at hand now. My results are so much better with C1 then what I ever achieved with LR. Also, capture one provides layers, a very nice special skin tone editor, and excellent sharpening options. Even Picture management in sessions is much more to my taste, and very backup-friendly.

@@rockj8197 Capture one has already a good set of tools on board - brushes, gradients, layers / masks, repair / heal, spot removal - enough to cover all the editing I tend to do on a daily basis. If I ever require even heavier pixel lifting (for example to collate two unrelated images): GIMP is finally supporting 16 bit, it's powerfull, and it's free and open source.

I came to this video to try to make a decision. I am currently using the dinosaur Lightroom 5. I still want to use my desktop but I do like the idea of opening up on any computer or my mobile device. I feel that Lightroom classic maybe the way to go because Lightroom 5 was a lot more like classic and that's what I'm used to. I just don't know if I need 20 GB or 1 TB of storage if I go with classic. I kind of think that I might only need 20 GB as I would only be using the cloud sync to view my already edited files.

My solution has always been: Google Photos for personal images, Physical hard drive for pro, and occasional Google Drive backups. I do not recommend this system - I can't find anything on my Google drive, you have to be extremely organized to make it work

Just following on from my previous comment, ive noticed as well that although the sliders arent available for the tone curve it does still only allow adjustment of four categories, shadows, darks, lights and higlights, rather than individual points so same affect as the sliders and the desktop version has the amount of change. Im guessing there arent the sliders for the curve because the ipad and phone versions superimpose the curve adjustment on top of the image, so slider adjustment wouldn't work. Out of interest do adjustments to the four elements of the tone curve have a different affect to the standard highlights, shadows, whites and black sliders given they are limited to the four broad categories albeit named differently?

I don’t understand; under the ‘Light’ tab in CC, there are sliders for highlights, shadows, whites, and blacks. Is this not what you need for the ‘backwards C’ edits? Those are what I always use

Nobody seems to mention the fact that it is a pain and YOU HAVE TO import images in LRC to be able to do anything with them. CC is much simpler, you just point to the image wherever it is and you can work on it (like the majority of new image editors do nowadays) LRC is old and CC is the new way; Adobe realized LRC was too cumbersome and is doing something about it. Bravo Adobe! No mention in your video, KJ, that CC can work and save on your external fast drive and you do not need to pay lots of money for cloud storage (which is also slower) More and more features make their way into CC; eventually LRC will be redundant and most likely discontinued Some people only know LRC and refuse to learn CC, although it is easier Just my 2 cents

Off topic question. Maybe you have an older video that answers this and I can’t find it BUT… Do you edit your photos differently for online viewing vs. printing? Online is obviously viewed on screens so there’s back lighting on the picture and it may shows brighter vs. if you print the same file it looks darker. I know it may depend on the brightness of the display your editing and viewing it on but is there an approximate bump up in exposure that helps (like + 1/3 stop of exposure) and they’ll come out looking closer to what you see on a screen? Maybe there’s a preset you use to help…any guidance would be appreciated.

Crazy enough it is not the use of the settings but the organizing part of Lightroom Classic. I really get lost. It is not sinking in somehow, I do not grasp the workflow and I tried many tutors and streams....It is in my head I get short circuited in a way. And for me it is getting frustrated, that is for me the only reason why I don't use Lightroom Classic and use Lightroom CC...and when I want to go deeper I use Photoshop anyhow Greetz, Guus from the Netherlands

Lightroom CC and Classic need to have a child. I'm not sure why Classic can't be intuitive and easy to navigate and I don't understand why CC can't have a bit more features. I feel like Adobe is afraid to remake Classic too much to upset the old time fans and they're too afraid to make CC too much like Classic as it would confuse everyone. It's like a strange middle-ground where no one is fully satisfied. My friend can run Classic on a 6 year old iMac that sounds like it's going to explode whenever it processes more than 3 photos but I can't even do AI noise reduction on an iPad Pro with a powerful M2 chip because I'm forced to use a lackluster mobile version. It doesn't make sense and it's painfully frustrating.

Hey the best way I’ve found to get rid of the iPhoto clutter is to make shared albums and place all your photos in them. Then you can delete them from your main photo library but you’ll always have them. They’ll no longer upload automatically to any application but you can still manually select them to upload to any app when you need to. I have zero photos in my library, everything in shared albums, and I have zero problems with adobe automatically uploading them.

No. Not for me. I edit lots of images for customers and I want them locally on my computer. I edit while on flights with no internet. I also don't think it does as great of a job. It lacks a little when turning down shadows

Jan 2023 - Lightroom CC does have the calibration tool. You just have to tell Lightroom to show it with the 3 dots tool. Same for your backwards C thing - you can of course adjust that under the Light tool, it'S all there: lights, dark, white, black. At that point of time I stopped watching the video...

When I first started 2 years ago in my business I didn't even know about any editing programs. But was told to use Lightroom so I did but it's the LR the cc I had no clue about LrC until I went to a photography workshop and was noticing that everyone was using LrC. I tried to use the LrC and was soo frustrated even just trying to start even just the exporting photos. I've been editing in LR now for almost 2 years and just like you said KJ how do I change???

If your goal is to use LrC as your primary app, you just have to push through the learning curve, take your time, and I promise you'll be fine. There are a load of excellent online tutorials that can help. Honestly the main editing tools are very similar, there's just a LOT more options and flexibility in LrC for professionals (and I still use CC for different tasks / on the go).

Some of the adjustment tools are named the same, but don't work at all the same in CC and are not nearly as effective as in Classic. Even setting a tool like Dehaze to 200 (double it's default) you have to scrubb a part of your photo over and over and over..... Same with Exposure and other tools. Sad. And the final effect is NOT the same. Inferior effect in CC. And if you want to burn all around your subject with a very broad brush in Classic it's great. One swipe and a very subtle effect. But in CC you have to circle 6-7 times even at full "flow" and the result are very non--subtle. CC is like a high school rock band playing Nirvana, vs. Nirvana playing Nirvana. Repeat, it's not just a different interface, but poorly rewritten effects. If you're a serious photographer and started with CC switch to Classic for best results, even on basic adjustments.
