Katelyn James About a year ago I replaced my 7DII with and R. I am not a pro so new RF lenses was too much of an expense for me. But I decided NOT to adapt my lenses, instead they were “naturalized”: I purchased an adapter for each lens. These adapters are never removed. I share your experience, all my lenses are new again. I am definitely not deficient in resolution from my lenses. And the R is 30Mp. Thanks for your video!

Should try out the R5 if it’s in your budget and same price point as the 5Div was back in the day and the R5 is known now as “the photographers perfect camera” and completely blows the 5Div out of the water

@Chelsea Uren If you are not shooting fast moving subjects and don't need the fast burst speed you can save money by buying EOS R. Some actually think that it's a better camera than R6, but I think R6 is slightly better. It's the R5 that gives the real resolution and dynamic range improvement over those two models. So EOS R would be a nice choice for you to consider.

Similar thoughts here except I have a 90d (crop sensor) which is 32mp. My main concern is going down to a 20mp camera (very strange decision on canon’s part I think). I’ve watched so many videos and it’s my main worry but maybe full frame will be fine. It’s a big decision to regret! I hope you got yours and are enjoying it

For shooting with flash (or strobes) particularly in dark situations as you mentioned in the video, you need to disable *exposure simulation* to not have a black viewfinder (or LCD). I actually assign that to a custom shooting setting (C3 for me) so I can switch right to it.

But honestly, it saved me a ton, and was much faster (I shoot youth sports, and I use to have to spend all the next day in the darkroom, and I would waste so much film! Even the older bodies like the Canon 10D and the 300D (original Rebel) had better low light capabilities than the ASA film I used (800 for colour and T-Max 3200 for Black and White). Any colour image was less noisy with the digital bodies of a decade and a half ago than film! I am hoping I will be wowed like that when I go mirrorless for the '22 season

I have heard the batteries in general are an issue for the R series. Namely b/c you are utilizing the video screen 100% of the time, so this is I believe is going to be the norm, and not the batteries. I am so hesitant. Glad you liked it overall. I don't think the 20mp thing is an issue. Let's face it - shooting RAW, it really won't matter. I have 2 5D3 and a 6D. I don't think I will need to get anything new for a bit, but at least when I am ready, I will feel a little more ok about it all!

@Seitenwerk4 жыл бұрын
My personal experience with an RP: it definitely drains battery faster than your average DSLR, due to the sensor being active the whole time + screen etc. so depending on your usage you may get a pretty short usage duration. But you can increase that by a lot if you for example activate eco mode, which shuts off the screens only seconds after you stop using the camera. Not having the screen run the whole time increases the usage time up to 1000 shots. So you can have the long usage time if you are just aware of this

I have had the EOS R since it came out 2 years ago and have had the R5 for about a month. I have a few suggestions on settings, in which you may be interested: 1. Since getting the R5, I changed to using cRAW. FIle size is about half of RAW and you will not be able to tell the difference. ie. Need less SD card memory and less HDD space. 2. If you have the adapter with the control ring, or an RF lens, then the default setting for this ring (on the R5) is for Exposure Compensation, but requires the shutter button to be pressed to activate the function. I changed the setting so it does not require the shutter button to be pressed first. So my default mode is Manual, but with Auto ISO. Hence if I need to change the selected ISO value I can either use the control ring for Exposure Comp or manually set ISO using the ISO dial (which by default is the Quick Control Dial on the R5). 3.There are 3 custom Mode buttons (ie. C1, C2 and C3). I have these set up as 3 common conditions I regularly use and when you include M mode there are actually 4. So one of these is for when I use flash indoors and it is too dark to be using it as fill flash. In this case the ExpSim is deactivated (ie Exposure Simulation which Katelyn described) and viewfinder brightness stays the same regardless of room lighting. For all other modes I have ExpSim enabled. I have one custom setting for cases where I intend to use fill flash and People/face recognition with eye detect, another for fast moving subjects with animal eye detect and another with fast moving subjects with zone autofocus. These are just examples to give an idea of the flexibilty of the customization possible. You need to decide if you want the camera to remember changes you make to custom settings. ie. If you turn the camera off and back on, do you want the settings as you stored them or as they were when you last turned the camera off. 4. You will need the camera in hand to understand this suggestion. For the fill flash setting (ie my custom setting above) the camera will not work as you would hope, so I have a workaround until Canon hopefully releases a firmware upgrade. The ExpSim icon and histogram in the viewfinder are grayed out, when the flash is attached and on, but they are still essentially working, until you press the shutter button half way (or AF ON button), at this point the camera acts as if ExpSim is disabled (std brightness viewfinder) until the exposure metering timer (default of 8s) expires and then the viewfinder reverts to the grayed out histogram etc. The workaround I mentioned involves pressing a button which will cancel the 8s metering timer, causing the ExpSim condition to return to the viewfinder. I found 2 buttons that will cancel the timer, but you have to press them twice. ie. "Play" and "Mode". There are probably other buttons you could use and you could also customize a button, but pressing the Mode button twice is quite easy. 5. The joystick is not set up to move the AF point across the viewfinder, by default. You need to set it up yourself. Having done that, pressing the joystick will center the AF point. The SET button can now be reassigned, because it also defaults to centering the AF point. I reassigned the SET button to display the Drive Modes, so I can quickly change these settings. My point is that there is a significant amount of customization available on these cameras. In most cases if you don't like the choice Canon made for a button or dial you can probably change it to something you prefer.
@brucewarren95634 жыл бұрын
For suggestion 4 above, the Mode button is not an option for the R6, since it uses a Mode dial. However, I just did some tests to find out a few other buttons that will achieve the same thing. So in addition to the Play button, there is the Q button and if you configure the SET button like I did it can also be used. Also, I turn off the Auto Preview in both the back LCD panel and the Viewfinder. You may want to leave one of them on for flash photography, but it becomes very annoying in the viewfinder if you are taking a lot of photographs in succession. You will become very confident you nailed the shot because of the ExpSim feature, as long as you take a sequence of shots to cover the case of people blinking etc. Just do a manual check every now and then. The reason I disable Auto Preview on the back LCD panel is to conserve battery.

Nkiruka Herche sure it’s just an EOS R with a 24-70 and an Outtex underwater skin. They kinda are like the wetsuit company for cameras and they are a much cheaper alternative to the dedicated housings while still being safe for your camera. I’ve had it for two months now and used it on 8 underwater shoots and it’s great however you can’t really reach the touchscreen super frequently so it’s easier to just put the focus point in the middle then focus and recompose like in the DSLR days.

Nice. Just a tip: you may probably use the face detection in combination with servo. There is an option somewhere in the advanced menu that lets you activate the regular focus rectangle while using that combination. This way you can point at something or a face and the camera will specifically start to track it once you half press the shutter. In contrary in regular face tracking mode the camera may potentially track a person/face you dont want to. This can easily happen when your at an event and have many people in the scene. So activating this option combines both worlds and give you the chance to actually selecting your target (without having to adjust it via the touchscreen)

jvhphoto 20mp is more than enough. People underestimate the pixel count. Many professional cameras have 12MP which is also enough. 20mp actually give the R6 a low light and noise advantage over other cameras with a higher pixel count like the R, the R5 or the RP

Not sure if anyone else has brought this up, and you very well might know this, but the reason your 50 mm was sharper on the R6 could be that you may need to calibrate the lens for the 5DM4. Mirrorless lenses use the sensor to focus so there's never a need to calibrate for a mirrorless camera, but DSLR's use the sensor and lens. So the lens might front or back focus on the DSLR but be perfect on the mirrorless. Glad you're enjoying the new setup! Even though I'm a nature photographer, I thought this review was very helpful! Might replace my 7DM2 with it!

Really enjoyed your very practical and enthusiastic review. I think if, by inference, you were overshooting by 2,000 images with the 5Div, then something was very wrong with your previous set-up. Not an issue anymore perhaps, but I find the 5Div (like all previous 5Ds) very accurate and easy to use. Some of it may be to do with using f1.2 lenses at their widest setting, where focus is ultra-critical and that the focus system on the R cameras provides advantages (face detect and eye detect) that the SLRs couldn't match. Good luck with your mirrorless investment.

Really like your video and glad you are enjoying your new camera. I switched to mirrorless for 1 wedding season a few years ago with the fujifilm xt1, I work in manual mode all day. When i got to the inside photos 1/200th ISO200 f5.6 (to make the ambient light disappear) I used flash and realized the viewfinder was pitch black due to the electronic viewfinder, switched back to a DSLR and never tried mirrorless again. I am glad you mentioned this problem in your video.

Congratulations on your new camera! I pre-ordered the EOS R5 as soon as possible (5am on the day it was announced), it came in on a Thursday night and I shot a wedding with it the next morning (July 31st). I already transitioned from the 5D Mk4 to the EOS R about a year ago so adapting to the EOS R5 was easier with that previous EOS R experience. I'm planning to do a video by the end of this month on my experience transitioning from the 5D Mk4 to the EOS R and now the EOS R5. Battery life is probably the biggest adjustment but now that I'm mirrorless I'm never going back to DSLR. I have had the *temperature warning* icon show up on the EOS R5 while only shooting stills, it happened during at least 4 wedding so far on both of my EOS R5 bodies and I found that I need to power them off when not actively shooting. When I power them off I can get through a whole wedding day. The new firmware seemed to help a little but when I did a corporate headshot job last week I got the *temperature warning* icon after only about 30 minutes. Yes, there are little quirks and adjustments going from DSLR to mirrorless but it is definitely the future and that's why I would totally recommend it to anyone.

I've had the r6 preordered since July and still haven't gotten it :( But super excited for when I do. For the next video, I'm super interested in seeing the setup and settings. Also, what you said about the dynamic range cutting down on bright whites is somewhat alarming to me since I shoot light + airy newborn portraits on a bright white background. It would be super helpful to hear more about this. Thanks!

13:24 I think a lot of people use smaller (64GB ish) cards for their main card and a larger 128/256/512 GB backup card. You would just swap out the smaller main cards and leave the larger backup in the camera unless you need it.

I'm trying to start a photography business after one being a hobbyist off and on for years. I decided to get the RP as I'm not doing weddings and can risk the single card slot. I also wanted to start being able to invest in RF glass. I've been very, very happy with the images I get from that and I can't even use my EF lenses yet because of the adapter backorder. My kit had the 24-240 for cheap. I also have the RF 50 1.8, which is great and a Samyang 14mm 2.8

If you are starting out and know you are serious about photography I would buy the best you can afford. I would also be tempted to buy a pristine condition second hand 5D Mkiii or iv, there are plenty about due to a few people upgrading to R5. Other than that, the R6 would be perfect as Canon cameras are not difficult to operate as long as you watch plenty of KZbin tuition videos. Learn the important photography standards and the camera will be easy to set up.

This is a great video. I work as a photographer at a state university. For work I use a 5D mk IV. I know this camera inside and out and enjoy using it. That said, for personal work I bought a EOS RP last year to try out mirrorless. It was amazing how much the AF tech has changed. I just recently bought a EOS R. It is a true 5D mk IV mirrorless camera. I was able to buy it for a crazy good price and enjoy using it so much. I agree entirely that mirrorless is the way to go if you are starting out. It is possible to buy a great mirrorless camera for a fair price and use any Canon glass in front of it.

I always have resistance when new things come out on the market, just because I know and love what I have. This video was so helpful! I will definitely be saving up! Question- how was it editing and making sure Michael’s images from his Mark “matched’ yours? Was it easy to make the gallery look cohesive? I worry since I like having a back up camera but I won’t be able to afford to get two mirrorless cameras. Also, if there is no view area in top that shows you your settings, how do you know what your ISO, etc. is? Also, seeing how easy it is to change your Kelvin makes me super happy!
@brucewarren95634 жыл бұрын
You can see the ISO setting in both the viewfinder and on the back screen. In fact you can also see the histogram in the viewfinder, if you want that. There are several options you can turn on and off for viewing info in both the back screen and viewfinder. You can cycle through various screen displays, that you have previously setup, using the Info button.

Great video and great camera. My only concern are the 20MP - Coming down from the 30MP the 5D Mark IV had do you still feel the images are as sharp on the R6 when looking at them in Lightroom? Also do you feel like you can do some cropping and retain crispness as in the mark iv? I have an EOS R (same 30MP sensor as 5D mk IV) and would like to upgrade but this is the only thing that worries me.

I’ve had the R for two years and I rented the R6 this weekend for a wedding. I had the same concern but I did an a/b compare with the same shot using both cameras and darn if the 6 wasn’t a little cleaner and sharper. First glance through the raws from the wedding, the images look fantastic. The two issues I had were to my eye, the EVF wasn’t as sharp as my R was. It drove me nuts. I kept trying to adjust the diopter, but I couldn’t quite get it. Totally useable, but not as tack sharp as the R. So i wonder if it’s just not as good or the one I had. Also as she mentioned in the video I tore through 4 batteries on the day which was surprising. Luckily I had four batteries but I thought I’d only need 2 maybe 3.

Loved this! I’m so curious to get my hands on mine because I felt like the EOSR was a HUGE learning curve. The coloring was really difficult to match my Mark iii and I struggled with the viewfinder/screen switching giving me a little bit of motion sickness. It is super sharp. I’ve enjoyed it the more I used it but I’ve had to practice a lot. I haven’t heard anything similar from people with the R6 (and I did from other people with the EOSR) so I’m happy about that!

Why did you decide on the R6 over the R5? I am currently looking to upgrade my cameras.
@KatelynJames4 жыл бұрын
A few reasons! The R5 is $1,100 more expensive, uses new (very expensive) memory cards that I would need to invest in and it has more megapixels that will just take up unnecessary HD space!
