On a trip to Venice once, just a short walk from the Rialto bridge, there is a shop that was used in this film, with all the press cuttings from the film etc, in the window. The owners are only too happy to tell the story of their shop being in the film. 👍

And I would have loved to have a conversation with both my mother and father or just one about their romance. We only got the how we met story. @@Lolly1122dooda I believe many others can as well. More than you think! Life can become so tough when you aren't able to be conventional and partnered up like the majority out there. So much of society is geared towards partnerships that at times it feels almost cruel to be so obviously singled out as the relationship-challenged reject.

There’s a part missing in the film right at the end, when Hepburn comes to meet Brassi at the outdoor cafe….she tells him she’s leaving sooner rather than later because she’d rather leave before the party’s over. It’s the culmination, and somebody cut it out??

I was there 10 years ago, St Marks Square was totally flooded, which happens a lot, basically Venice is a bunch of islands sitting on an ocean, folks sloshed around with water up to their knees. Amazing to see works by Tintoretto and Titian still in situ in the churches. Italian food, esp baguette is the best in the world.

@@JESUSISLORDforevermore888 I totally understand and agree with you, in an ideal world. I just think that in the context of Jane being so unsuccessful in love all her life, sometimes you're so hungry for what seems to come so easily to others, you'll go for any opportunity in order to keep from being devastatingly sad and lonely. Imagine what life would be like being single for so long, and yet for the most part, putting forth a happy and sunny image. It's no wonder she liked drinking! With no judgment on her character or similar people in real life, I understand why they get into these situations.

I was a teenager in 1955 when this movie came out. I fell in love with the theme music from this film (Summertime in Venice), which became a popular song that was played frequently on the radio, and I was a big fan of both Katharine Hepburn and director David Lean. I saw a lot of great movies in the fifties, but for some reason, I didn't get around to seeing this film when it came out, and in all the years that have passed, I never had a chance to see it until now. To the person who posted it on here, I'd like to say Thank you! Also, this is a beautiful color scan of the film, so I'm getting to see it the way it would have looked in a theater more than half a century ago. ADDED LATER: I did feel that the film ended too abruptly with part of the story missing, and after reading many of the other comments, I've learned that part of the ending is actually missing, which is disappointing.

Having watched the film today it has been cut even further. The very end when Renato is running along the platform is completely missing thereby the symbolic significance of his carrying the Gardenia for her is also missing and incidentally Jane falling in the canal earlier in the film is also missing,. Is someone messing around with this film making illegal edits or something. The film needs all of the conversations they are natural and beautifuilly acted it is a great insensitivity to cut parts of this film

Astounding tour de force as Hepburn carries the film.Beautifully portraide and believable.Her inner confilcts and morallity prevented her in the beginning from grasping the joy and love she was was being shown and desperately wanted really. He was sincere with her and showed such tenderness. Because she was so buttoned down He could see it and literally 'loved her. ' out of it The photography was out of this world and the dialogue all the way through was natural and utterly believable..A wonderful piece of art work of David Lean. I can see why this was his favourite picture.

In the original stage play Brazzi is a gigolo but in the film he has genuine affection. There is part of the film missing I have learnt when Katharine tells him she is going to go home, He doesn't want her to go. Katherine is giving mixed messages she doesn't want him to come the station to see her off whilst still hoping that he comes to the station which he does with a Gardenia, It is worth noting that Katherine in her real life had such a relationship for many many years with Spencer Tracey. Tracey did separate from his wife but did not divorce his wife. The plot of the film is a beautiful story and I think on a higher level than a 'fling'. A cliff-hanger ending to the film but I like to think that she writes to him and they meet many times over the years holding their affection for each other.

this is such a lovely movie. The beauty of Venice, the way the italian atmosphere is shown through certain sequences, the romantic music, everything is so so beautiful, especially that this was filmed during the 50s, when everything was still delightful and pensions like this one still existed. Last time i visited Venice it was extremely crowded (the San Marco place was FULL) and only few restaurants and hotels were open, because venetians dont live there anymore (most of them). These days, the city introduced new restrictive rules about visiting because of the damage that tourism brings to this area. The movie was splendidly made, the main actor is really handsome and genuine, my only regret is that Katherine seemed too old and ugly for the role and in comparison with the male. I never liked her looks, although she was an amazing actress, but they could have chosen a much better looking lady, to honor the beauty of this movie shot in stunning Venice.
@itisonlyadream
@itisonlyadream 2 ай бұрын
I think you missed the point, this story is about an old spinster who missed out on her chance to find love in her youth. Then, on a trip to Venice, she gets to experience the love she missed out on. So, I'd say that the casting was perfect and Katharine Hepburn was exactly the right actress for the part. The story would have made no sense with a young actress, like Debbie Reynolds, playing the part. Also, Hepburn was 48 in 1955 and Brazzi was 37, so she was actually only eleven years older than he was at the time the film was made. And, although Hepburn was never a great beauty, she did manage to look radiant in the scenes where she was falling in love.

@@dumitriudaniela You are certainly entitled to your opinion. But please remember, "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder" and "Beauty is only skin deep". To me, Kate had an inner beauty that shone through in some of her performances. In my opinion, What she lacked in superficial beauty was more than made up for by her extraordinary acting ability. @@itisonlyadream yes, she had iindeed an extraordinary acting ability, i agree. I am an artist though and for me, beauty is key, which is why, where there is no physical and vibrational beauty, it is hard for me to witness something, even a great actress like her. I never liked her vibe (which is something else than beauty), but i do appreciate her acting.

To me, Katharine Hepburn was never that ugly. Joan Crawford, with her painted on face, is the actress I always thought was butt ugly. I thought she looked like a mean woman, and that was long before "Mommie Dearest", the tell-all book by her daughter Christina came out. Betty Davis was also not known as a beautiful actress, she often took parts where she looked plain and unattractive. Davis said she wanted to be taken seriously (for her acting ability), so she turned down parts that made her look glamorous and opted instead for good scripts. I saw Davis in a TV interview and she said she wanted to be remembered as a "serious actress". Davis said good roles were all that mattered to her. She said she was never interested in being known as a glamorous "movie star". Like I said, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

This movie is like Roman Holiday but with older actors and without the beautiful, romantic feeling and bad acting!

So when Jane Hudson returned to Akron, OH, was she so affected by her trip that she reinvented herself, went insane, and reappeared as "Baby Jane" Hudson seven years later in "What Ever Happened to Baby Jane"? 😉😝
