When my son was maybe three, an older child (son of family friends, trying to be helpful!) told him that if he ran into the road, he would be hit by a car and turned into a *snake.* Cue several weeks of my lunatic small boy trying to fling himself under passing wheels. Give me strength. He's made it to 18 now, and remains resolutely human. Phew.

If I had my way, we never would have had the tooth fairy in my house and I'm not too keen on Santa Claus either. But with Santa Claus, since my wife is Christian and I'm not, I didn't fight her on her traditions. My kids don't think Elijah is real when we celebrate passover. On the Tooth Fairy, well, lost that battle.

I think those lies might actually serve a purpose. Which is, teaching kids that anyone - including their parents - can lie, teaching them to think for themselves and not just believe everyone, even people who they trust. There's a couple more lessons in there involving social dynamics. When they go to school they have to either tell other kids that Santa isn't real, or they have to defend the idea of Santa to other kids who think it's not real. The first teaches them to speak the truth no matter what the crowd says, and the second teaches them that they can be completely and utterly wrong, as the truth of Santa becomes undeniable throughout the years. I might be overthinking it, but I could never figure out why we lie to our kids about this kind of thing, so I sat down and thought about it and this is what I came up with. It's like a little piece of innocence that we can destroy in a controlled environment, and that teaches kids lessons without traumatizing them.
