My advice: Don't open up to anyone. Let this be a fresh start. Make friends and if you meet someone you feel a bond with, then wait awhile before you completely open up. Don't move extremely far away from home for your first year. It's really hard being on your own, even if you're living on campus. I live 3 hours away from my closet relative. And my family is over 10 hours away. Don't drink too much. Keep on top of your hw and chapter readings. Sometimes I would have to read two chapters a week for ONE class (around 100 pages) and sometimes I would put it off. Do hw during the week, study a bit on the weekend, and have fun on the weekends! Leave high school behind. Grow. College is a learning experience and about becoming an adult. Go to counseling (my school offers it and it's a lifesaver). Don't put yourself in a bad situation. Do not leave your drink unattended. Do not accept drinks from other people. Please be safe. If anyone needs to talk, let me know! I'm in my first year and I've gone through a lot of things this year.

I have officially been in college for a month, and I just wanted to add something to this AWESOME video: don't feel as if you HAVE to go to parties. I knew, coming into college, that parties were not how I wanted to spend my time, so instead I joined the swing dance club, and it's been WAY more fun!!!!! I knew coming in that I wanted to be myself, and be genuine. As a result, my first friend and I spent two hours discussing the Neuroscience program after we finished swing dancing! it was one of the most fun nights of my life! (btw don't expect to make close friends as soon as you get to school, it can take a while! I don't have any close friends yet) I guess my message is: be yourself. the beauty of college is that you can be free to be the person you are, and the person you want to be!!!

I'm only in the 10th grade now and I've been looking at things to be prepared for colleges since I was in like 8th. I've learned a lot of insight from a lot of different people and I'm still learning. I know most say "You have awhile before you need to worry about what you want to do and what college you want to go to" My response to that is High school is 4 years that pass really fast. And surprisingly it's already flying by. Morale of the story is I feel the need to thank you for your insight on this. I can relate to you , the girl who made this video, because I plan on joining marching/concert band when I enter college. Every video and site just helps out a little more :)

This video was great. I just finished my first month of college and I've been feeling a lot of the same things. It's been a great experience so far and I'm very curious to see what the rest of the year will be like versus this first month. I've met a lot of great people, but I've established a close group of about 7 people that I hang out with on the daily. Especially in my dorm, which is very social (we always leave our door open), I talk to other people on my floor all the time. If your school offers them, I highly recommend applying to a Living Learning Center. The one I live in is meant for students interested in business. This is great because my floor mates are all intelligent, determined students who came here to get a prestigious business career and didn't just come here to party. The LLC has given us dozens of opportunities to talk to recruiters in the business world - as freshmen! I go to Indiana University, which is notoriously a party school. I am not a big partier, so I was worried about fitting in. (Even though I live in an LLC, it is still housed in one of the biggest party dorms in the country) But I've been pleasantly surprised. Yes, there are kids who want to go party every night. But there's a lot more people who only go out once a week or every other week, which is much more my speed. When you want to spend a night in and just watch Netflix, that's totally ok. No one judges you for it. Everyone is doing their own thing. And it's so true that there's not much pressure to drink at parties. There's so much going on, random people will not be wondering why you don't have alcohol in your hand. College has been great so far and I can't wait to see how the rest of my year will go!

@KristanShuford9 жыл бұрын
Such great advice! Especially about friends. It took me until sophomore year to really find a good group for friends to hang with. Other Advice: Give people second chances. My three current best friends ( one of whom is my fiance´) are all people who I met freshman year, but never really bothered to get to know until later on. Get involved with a group that you love, don't bother with ones that you don't really care about. Don't wear your lanyard and keys around your neck. This is an unmistakable signal to upperclassmen that you are a freshman. Sometimes, you can go weeks without even leaving campus. Don't be afraid to get off campus with friends, explore local restaurants, parks, etc. The first day/week can be super overwhelming. It often feels like you have to sacrifice chances to meet new friends and bond in order to get work done. Ask friends to study with you even if you aren't in the same classes, this way you can do both at the same time. If you are feeling restless and lonely hang out in the lounge or coffee shop. chances are you will meet someone there.

I love your hair and makeup in this video. That braid is so cute! You should do a tutorial on how to do it. I also love how you have been doing your makeup lately - it looks very lovely. Great advice video by the way. I'm starting college in the fall this year and I am so nervous because in high school I was not popular at all. I was an outsider. I am also nervous because I would refer to myself as an introvert to an extent. Once I am comfortable around people I do find myself showing more of my personality to them, but I also have anxiety so it takes a lot of out me to talk to people at times. I am also a homebody which isn't a great factor since I will be living on campus, but I will have my cousin as my roommate, so that will make me feel a whole lot better all around.
@Katherout9 жыл бұрын
make sure you don't get too sucked in to clinging to your cousin!! there are so many introverts in college and no one knows how well or how poorly you felt you fit into your high school scene so college is your chance for a fresh start!
@kelseykutiexo9 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much! I will make sure to remember that. I guess it is just going to be weird because I assume that everyone will already know me by who I was in high school.

Kelsey Rae I can totally relate! I just completed my freshman year at college, and while I wasn't necessarily an "outsider" in high school I was very much an introvert with bad social anxiety (still am, lol). As for meeting other people and making friends, honestly while you do meet a ton of people during orientation, you really only stay friends with a few (and that's totally okay!) Also, one thing I regret was not going to all of the events (anxiety, lack of people to go with, etc) but my advice to you would be to just do it, y'know? If you want to go to a luncheon that your major offers, then go for it! The first week especially is scary since you're settling in your new life and your classes and whatnot, but I promise it does get better. Don't let your family drag you down (my parents would always jab me for being a "hermit" in my room when in reality I was too depressed to get out of bed). Don't be afraid to ask for help (something I regret not doing as well as I suffered from major depression during my fall semester) and don't let the fear of failing or looking dumb or whatever it may be, prevent you from doing something you want to do. You do you, bae! Good luck!
@kelseykutiexo9 жыл бұрын
vaderfanatic Thank you so very much for the advice! :) My anxiety gets so bad that I get to the point where my stomach starts to hurt and sometimes that results in throwing up. I will try to be myself, which is someone who is outgoing and likes to hang around people when I actually get to know them, and not care what others think (meaning if they are judgmental). My senior year of high school I started to focus on myself rather than what others wanted me to be like. I mostly like school for the education-portion (which is nerdy of me in a way, I know, lol) but I also do like to socialize as long as I'm comfortable with people. I'm sorry to hear about your depression during your fall semester of college. I am still dealing with depression, though it is not as serious as it was a couple years ago. I'm worried it will come back but I guess I'm just going to have to just jump right on in! I wish you the best of luck with your second year! :)

First month of college was definitely not my prime! I had the same issue with my roommates I felt like they had this great bond that I could never be a part of and as the year went on I actually ended up being great friends with the both of them. Either way I feel like the first month is the worst month because everyone's scrambling to make friends and to fit in when in reality it takes a while before you can truly find your place on your college campus with your best friends. I didn't make my best friends until the end of second semester. So if you feel like everyone's got it figured out I assure you they definitely don't! Great video so relatable!! This was helpful, I'm a Junior in college transferring from a community college to a university and to top it off I'll be moving in a day late. I've been stressing about trying to "fit in" and trying to make friends and finding my place I guess. Somebody compared college to high school and that actually made me stress out more because it really isn't. Anyway, thanks so much for this video.

As an introverted and shy person, it's very hard for me to make friends right off the bat. So when I came to college I was crushed when I saw other freshmen around me already settled in groups. I became somewhat depressed. If I had to give advice to incoming freshmen , it would be that it's okay if it takes awhile to settle into your new environment and make friends. I have a great group of friends God has blessed me with now!

so, i started college august 24 2015, i dont live on campus because there are no dorms where i go sadly, but hopefully in 2017 if i finnish my assosiates degree ill move into a different college campus that has dorms. i hope ill get accepted i cant wait till that time comes. i love college so far, but its a tad bit stressful when midterms. im not a socialble person, i like to be alone at times, i have a couple of friends, but sometimes i dont hang out with them because i listen to music and id rather listen to music then just talk. But thats just me. but i just wish they had a band at the santa fe community college sadly they dont it makes me disappointed. but i love that school so im perfectly fine in college. great first month so far besides the crazy midterms.

I'm a junior in high school and I just visited 2 colleges this past month. I'm kind of afraid once I go to college that I'll be a loser with no friends because I'm one of those introverted people with a small circle of friends. And it's perfectly fine like that right now, but once I get into a new environment where I don't know anyone (most likely my 4 besties won't end up going to the same college as me), what I'm I going to do?

What are your thoughts on websites like slug books? I will be a freshman and everyone says not to get books through the bookstore, but I'm worried professors will expect me to have textbooks soon after they are assigned
@Katherout9 жыл бұрын
Amy Lynn i advise not getting books for your classes until after the first day of each class, that way you know FOR SURE if you need those books. teachers won't assign reading on the books immediately (or if they do, they'll provide PDFs for the first few weeks) and that will allow you to receive books you order online. DO NOT BUY from the bookstore unless completely necessary. use bigwords.com!

Going to parties as a non-drinker: - LESSON LEARNED AT THE END OF COMMENT - I would get a cup of beer (like everyone had), but only fill it up half way. Then I would carry that around without drinking it. It would look like I had drank some - and if I felt i should raise it up to my lips, I could tilt it without actually drinking it. BUT... I actually found that going to these drinking parties was no where I wanted to be. You were hit upon by drunk guys, people were acting drunk-foolish, and it really wasn't enjoyable. I had to try it out because I felt that "it's college, that's what people DO". But quickly I realized that going out with a smaller group fo friends to an event or a gathering at their places was MUCH more of the way I wanted to spend my free-time. You do not have to drink to enjoy college! Don't let anyone pressure you to.

I'm not sure if what i'm about to say is true for a 4 year college / university. But as a Community college student, the best thing you can do is be friends with everybody!!! Screw groups or Cliques... Just be out there and talk to everyone... Be friends with everybody!!! and they'll love you for it!!! No kidding. [ Even the freshman :) ] If you do ever need some alone time tho... just walk out of your dorm and explore around campus or the town by yourself... Sometimes the best place you can get some fun solid alone time is in a beautiful place next to some strangers that you might not feel like talking to.

Advice for people watching this video - consider taking a gap year first. Travel, get a job, read, write, do something outside of school. There is no rush. You'll be better of for it whether or not you choose to go back. Why? 1) You'll learn more about yourself in a setting other than school (most of us never got this opportunity) 2) You'll learn the value of money early 3) You'll be more mature (trust me, you change between 18 and 20, big time, and usually for the better. College often magnifies the downsides of that period in your life, which is why a huge percentage of students report being depressed. Consider an alternative) One more piece of advice - DON'T take loans, especially loans above $10,000. Anything beyond that is dangerous, and it will limit your options, especially if you go into non-stem fields where entry level pay is bad.

I'm from another country and our university system is a bit different, but even I felt better after watching your video. :D Thanks! :D I am sooo thankful that I don't have to live in a dorm, I could never stay away from my home for such a long time. But I'm such a loner (and an abstinent one at that, lol xD), and they've been telling me since kindergarten, that you know 'it'll get better, they'll grow up, they'll mature and then they'll stop judging you'... Well I'm still waiting for that... Anyways I'm afraid I'll end up alone again. :(
