In Maine it's common when you visit an old school house to see low ceilings with curved tops of the walls, sort of like crown moulding so the heat would convect instead of being trapped in the corner, and the wood stove would be in the middle of the room with a flue that was split with two Tee's so they would get more heat from the flue pipe.
