Elderly AND the children! I woke this morning and immediately on my mind was how WE could rearrange society - give children back their childhoods, enable them to learn how to play, enable real natural learning - support families, as we need them to really care for their children and have communities and society supporting eachother to do this. WE need to re think all of society and what it is we are allowing by our sheer complacency.

I am 63 now and my whole working life I have had the attitude that our elderly are very important people . That they have contributed a lot in taxes and more their whole life . As I grew up I was grateful that they had seen us through a terrible war and deserved all the help and respect that we can give them now in old age . They have contributed a lifetime and deserve to be looked after as best we can to give them a most comfortable retirement and I expected that that was what the government would be doing , making sure they were well looked after because of all the tax they'd payed in their lifetime , how disappointed I am now as an older and less naive person that they are not being looked after in comfort at all . I always donated to Help the Aged because of my respect for the older generation and their contribution to making our younger lives better . The cycle should be , they look after us , then we look after them . I believe a countries taxes should be for that country and it's natives first and foremost to make everyone the most comfortable here .

The whole taxation system is so corrupt. A fair system would choose to either tax you on your income OR tax you on your expenditure. The fact that we have so many post tax taxes is practically criminal. For example, a high rate tax payer with a nice home will have to pay say £3000 council tax but would have to earn around £6000 gross income to end up with the £3000 so that council tax bill literally costs you £6000. The system is designed to keep us all down. Keep up the good fight Katie.

@kristian5009 - Does anyone actually remember a time BEFORE VAT? ... It's been in use for so long, 70-80 tears, that it's just accepted and rarely questioned! ... I've tried many times to understand how it's meant to work, the pro's and the con's, and always come out with the same result: To benefit the wealthy, and the Gov., while making life more expensive to the final consumer! 🤔
@douglasskinner49 минут бұрын
Income tax is problematic because no one can define income. At the very least it involves an intrusive government investigating every citizen in order to define and thereby determine his income. It also assumes the subject of each inquiry is guilty until proven innocent--without due process. Tax examiners become their own courts rendering judgments as to a person's liability. Expenditure tax, on the other hand is paid at the point of transaction and is collected kind of like a toll and once it's done, it's done. Moreover, with limited government doing as few things as possible, expenditure taxes could be very low. The most just form of expenditure tax is simply a sales tax i.e., a fixed percentage of the sale price. In America it is an itemized item on the bill of sale, so you always know what you're paying. And when it rises it is more likely that this will incur voter ire, making the politicians chary about raising it. By contrast "value added" is too nebulous largely hidden, and thus open to mischief.

Katie you are a precious, rare stone. As i was getting gas, i watched a man struggling to find change, for a gal of gas, i was able to give him $20.00 (7 gal) for gas. His face lit up with hope. Then at a grocery store, I watched a disabled elderly man in a w/c searching for change to buy a loaf of bread and a small pkg of deli meat.. ""I told him i hate going to the store for one or two items, he said,'' i cant ever afford to buy more than a few things Iso i helped pay for his food. The next time i was at that store, the cashier told me I started a trend, she was seeing more and more people help pay for our elderlies groceries. That was the only good news i heard in 4 yrs. Make sure when you help people, it doesn't go to drugs, i suggest never giving cash

Always makes me think of a quote from the great C.S.Lewis. ‘It is easy to think the State has a lot of different objects-military, political, economic, and what not. But in a way things are much simpler than that. The State exists simply to promote and to protect the ordinary happiness of human beings in this life. A husband and wife chatting over a fire, a couple of friends having a game of darts in a pub, a man reading a book in his own room or digging in his own garden-that is what the State is there for. And unless they are helping to increase and prolong such moments, all the laws, parliaments, armies, courts, police, economics, etc., are simply a waste of time’

UK tax thresholds are far too high -> income tax, NI, capital gains, VAT, council tax, and highest transport/energy costs compared with Europe we are getting a raw deal. In the US workers who are on salaries can claim far more tax as expenses and have a lower tax threshold. If we had services which worked like in Sweden or Norway then the British public wouldn't mind so much.

Watching and listening to Katie discussing important issues which in most cases have a negative effect on our lives is always a matter of concern to most people in this country. Unfortunately, the elderly have in my own opinion never been treated with care or respect by this country just look back into the past. As for the farmers they like the Health Service are extremely important to us each providing a service to maintain the welfare of all individuals. As for continuous immigration it will only destroy the fabric of our economy and the foundation of stability in a country which to all intents and purposes is an extremely rich one. despite the propaganda to state otherwise by mainstream media acting on behalf of this government. Which is not fit for purpose especially with Keir Starmer the Prosecutor in the driving SEAT and his counterpart Reeves.

Dear Mrs Hopkins, unfortunately what you describe is also happening in other (European) countries. The total lack of accountability, the dismantling of post-World War II provisions that were built up by today's elderly, the many billions of euros of taxpayers' money that mysteriously disappear. The people and parliament look at it but seem powerless. And yet here lies the possible solution. Because what can a few thousand civil servants ultimately achieve against almost 80 million inhabitants of the UK? I hope that, through the special way in which you take your fellow countrymen with you, you may be an example in other countries, where people who feel unheard are given a strong voice again, in their quest for a fair society. A deep bow to you.
