Watch her on the turns. She makes up so much time. Plus you look on the underwater shots. She is very very efficient. Maximum result with minimum effort.

Nice overhead shot of Ledecky's freestyle turn after the first 50 in the replay (5:46). I've noticed before her good underwaters off the wall (see her 800 at Tokyo, flipped 2nd to Quadarella at 750, and just *_killed_* her on the underwater), but this perspective let me see how fast she was at the flip and push. Smith started her turn just a fraction after Ledecky and was a yard back after they came up. Credit to Smith for hanging tough the last 100.

She was already a superstar before he retired. It isn't like Phelps retired and she thought to herself "Now I need to take over." She had already "taken over" the 400, 800, and 1500 free at that point.

@@richtran In the 400 IM. Who cares? She has no plans to swim it at major competitions and obviously spends her time training for her various freestyle distances.

@@brianh6 Ledecky is yesterday's news. Mcintosh is the here and now.
Fun watching a close race with Smith and Ledecky. In any other time Leah Smith would be a superstar in her own right.

But Grimes wasn’t there either. I think Ledecky saw an opportunity to “have fun” and possibly win. Medley races are always more “fun” than single stroke.

60.26 for Ledecky's freestyle leg. That's only 1.58 seconds slower than the 16 year old Chinese girl at the 2012 Olympics (who's last 100 was almost identical to Lochte's at the same competition!). Imagine that! And Ledecky swam a 1:54.5 200 freestyle here.

@@brianh6 Katie is a generational talent who could fall off a yacht and be competitive in any race. It's unfortunate there aren't enough hours in a day and days in a meet for her to train and compete in every race. Having said that, it would be fun to see her take the challenge of concentrating on these other kinds of races in the Olympics instead of the distance events. It would take supreme confidence and chutzpah to eschew the "automatic" gold medals to try to win other events, but would only amplify her legend.
