Screen legends Barbra Streisand and Robert Redford make movie magic as the captivating star-crossed lovers, Hubbell Gardiner and Katie Morosky. Theirs is a classic love story sparked by the attraction of opposites, played out against the backdrop of American life during times of foreign war, domestic prosperity and McCarthy-era paranoia in Hollywood.

That is the best telephone scene in movie history. It is profoundly moving in an indescribable way. It shakes me up every time I've seen it. Neither Robert Redford or Barbra Streisand were ever better than this. I didn't even know either one of them was capable of being this good.

That’s true. She really should have found someone who was more aligned with her own political views and the causes that she believed in. Never chase a man or change for a man, he’ll never be a attracted to you. It will only hurt yourself in the end. It makes the other person (man or woman) want to run away. @@gibsongirl2100 You're welcome. I wish more people would understand that art (and entertainment) is not about self-help; it's not a therapy session. What makes "The Way We Were" a classic love story is that this is one of the rare times when the hype about the stars' romantic chemistry was actually true. That's why people are still so affected by the movie. Has there ever been a better demonstration of how opposites attract? Streisand and Redford perfectly embodied the archetypes they were playing.

But you can see why she does it- by saying she will change, for him (not because she wants personal growth) its because she doesnt have her own self worth. In my opinion, it’s because Katie was still re-living WWII. She thought she still had to support anyone who fought against Nazis. She also had photos of Roosevelt and Churchill, who were very much capitalists. It seems nobody really challenged her about the fact that Stalin had blood 🩸 on his hands.

Maybe at that time, people living in the West did not really know much about what were behind the Iron Curtain. "The grass on the other side is always greener". So some people idealized something that was beyond their reach/understanding.

This reminds me of The Last Five Years. Like, we can understand why the man got put off for a while, but then he cheats and it's like, OK DUDE NO. Especially with this guy cheating on her while SHE WAS PREGNANT.

I am in Awe as I read all these comments. They didn't "work out" for a myriad of reasons. 1) She chased him 2) She was pushy & nagged him 3) She was Jewish and he wasn't 4)They were political opposites 5) Men don't like to be "driven" by women! They like women who "support" their ambitions....I am 64 & it took me a LONG time to figure this out.😜🤣👍

This is the most humiliating thing to watch. I wish she had a friend who would smack her and tell, her to move on because this guy is NOT into you. In real life Hubble would have changed his name and moved far away. I can’t imagine this embarrassing desperation ever actually working to get a man back.

Yeah, its so cringey. All the begging and self-questioning. No man would be attracted to such an insecure woman with such a low-self-worth. Why would a so-called feminist settle for this?

Wow, you really didn't get this movie. He was drawn to her because her temperament was so different from his and vice versa. It was an attraction of opposites and Streisand and Redford embodied it brilliantly.

This is the first time I am exposed to this movie. After a few clips on youtube, I decided to watch it on Amazon Prime. After their fight at JJ's place and she was about to call him, I could not continue to watch. First, I thought the script was so bad that she would do the begging. Then, I calmed down and saw that the movie was really well-made. Young women (of course not all) could be like that, even with all kinds of feminism talks today. At the beginning, it was a mismatch. She was into him but not vice-versa. The first accidental date, he puked then fell asleep on her. A mismatch cannot be fixed, no matter how both sides try. The movie was quite realistic. There was no "happily ever after".

Sandy Prater 2 months ago Rewatching this as an adult, I have to say that I find many parts a bit cringe-worthy. She really is just begging this man to stay in her life. I get it. I've known people to do it in real life. Still makes me say an internal eulogy for her pride. repost PEOPLE YOUR NOT GETTING THE POINT OF THE MOVIE!! guilt trip never works. he was with her out of pity/

I hate this scene ...its beautiful , poignant and important as hell - beautifully scripted, acted and integral to the movie....still? I HATE it because it reminds me of a time I begged for love ....begged for love????? It should NEVER happen and it is grotesquely demeaning of a strong character.....a strong woman .....as I was ....it is awful and so painful......despite its necessity and the connection to future? I hate it as much as I hated - still hate - the desperation , need and relinquishment of strength....so many ( male and female, straight or gay) given to hold on to passion, beauty and the idea /belief it is due to reclaim or receive love ...in the idiocy and humiliation of believing we must give everything - including dignity to love someone we consider our superior .....which should never be part of "love" ......JJ? is wonderful " its not like losing someone....like Katie...THAT? would be a loss"
