There needs to be discussion about people remaining behind to protect their property. I completely understand the desire to do so, and I'm aware that there weren't firefighters immediately present, but I've always taken the first rule of any crisis which is "don't create another victim". There is no property worth a life. When a person stays behind they put themselves at risk which in turn places first responders at risk. It also diverts resources that could be used at a more strategically important location. There is plenty of blame to go around after the fact, but in the moment I want firefighters to have every resource at their disposal and don't want to put them at risk just to protect property.

I would stay. If I lose my living space, I would be sleeping on the sidewalk. So I would rather be dead. Is that what rich people want? They have no need, and no care for poor people. Excellent interview, Katie. I would like to see the next 2 hours of this conversation. There is much more to add to the conversation. The guys hit the nail on the head, but greater explanation is required. To your question of rebuilding, yes. But make the new construction requirements more resistant to fire. Add defensible space requirements to housing developments. Fuels reductions, a MUST. Ingress and egress improvements, a MUST. Red Flag staffing, a MUST. Timely repair of emergency vehicles, a MUST. Any agency without the logistical support for an operation, is doomed to failure. Can you imagine the Army not feeding the troops on the battlefield? I say this after spending 33 years in the fire service. Keep fighting, union strong!

What a shocking situation when you consider the number of millionaires who lost their homes. Think of the amount of taxes these residents paid not to have adequate water in hydrants, along with a reduced number of fire stations, fire trucks, mechanics, and firefighters. I lived in Manhattan from 1966 to 2016. And during those 50 years I experienced SIX fires in the 1927 buildings in which I lived. I am deeply grateful that the NYFD seemed to have been fully funded, so much so that in the late 1980's a fire in my apartment building was located directly 2 floors down from my rent controlled apartment and the firefighters stopped the fire directly one flight below my apartment. The next day I was so grateful that I walked to the fire station a few blocks away. The Manhattan firefighters seemed to find my gratitude "quaint." But they said that if I really wanted to thank them that I should write a letter commending their service to the Fire Commissioner in Brooklyn. These brave firefighters saved my RENT CONTROLLED apartment in midtown Manhattan! I wrote that thank you letter that very day!

I fought wildfires while attending college, and it's truly a unique and dangerous job. And these recent fires are at the extreme end of the wildfire spectrum due to the high winds involved + densely-populated areas. These firefighters deserve a huge thanks and our appreciation. As I watched the intense, dangerous firefighting I envisioned the day when we have sophisticated robotics (probably drones) equipped with AI, capable of performing firefighting. I imagined, e.g., a swarm of drones capable of transporting water from the ocean (or retardant, or both) to the fires, possibly autonomously. I hope this day comes soon, so we can reduce the number of fire-related deaths and be more effective in these battles.......which there will be more and more of. 🙏🙏

California should start building with different materials! How many bad earthquakes are there per year ? Not since long ago. There are a lot of smaller ones. But the fires devastate the state every frigging year! All the time! It's time to start building with concrete, bricks, etc. Not the light wooden panels that catch fire like matches. Enough already. People lose not only their property but their lives. Thank you to brave and hard working firefighters!

Thank you, F.D. and Katie for opening up the conversation. Climate change is not going anywhere, budget cuts are everywhere, infrastructure is decades too old to handle the load. Lots of questions ahead could water pressure be delegated to those areas in an emergency where it's needed for example from LA to the the other fires zones? Could under the ground water tanks at the top of the neighborhoods help so water is downhill vs pumping up the hill for pressue? With the winds of California where are more wind turbines and solar panels for use? We all need to get ahead on better building materials. Many states are seeing repeat fires in the same areas. Why haven't the powerlines been moved underground in some of these fire prone areas? We need to step up and try to make improvements to try and keep up with Mother nature. We are already behind the 8 ball.

Katie, I think I can possibly add some worthwhile information. Down here in south eastern Australia we face very similar fire weather conditions, and the same brush / urban interface problem as L.A. does. Melbourne is very much like L.A. - a big sprawling city that spreads out up into the hills - and south eastern Australia has faced similar fire events as that which L.A. faced on the 7th of January - south eastern Australia and Los Angeles are rated as having the two worst brush / urban interface fire risks in the world - that is just reality. Straight up I will tell you that on the 7th of January, having an extra 40 fire engines, or holding the off-going shift of 1000 firefighters on the morning of the 7th of January honestly wouldn't have made a lot of difference in the number of structures saved - over 7000 houses were lost in the Palisades and the Eaton fires - and 40 more engines wasn't going to make much of a difference to the outcome - if any at all. When you combine the wind strengths of that day with the single digit humidity on that day then a wildfire is simply unstoppable - and can't even be effectively fought until the wind strength eases quite a bit - no matter how many firefighters you throw at it. The captain mentioned going into property protection mode - unfortunately there were just far too many embers being picked up by the wind and these were igniting trees and bushes and outdoor furniture and everything else that everyone has around their homes these days - and embers also get sucked into the rooftop air conditioners and in through vents etc - you can't save (many if any) houses under those conditions - it is just impossible - and it is very hard to hold a fire hose and move it around a house reacting to where new things are constantly catching fire - when the wind is so strong that you can barely stand up. All you can do is get the people out of the way of the fire - because in those weather conditions the fire is simply going to do whatever it wants to do - and there is nothing that humans can do to stop that. Things might be a little better next time when everything has been rebuilt to much newer more resistive fire codes - but the next big fire could hit another part of the city instead. I will answer a few things that I have heard - - why didn't the department hold over the off-going shift (1000 firefighters) on the morning of the 7th? Very little point in doing this really - there was 7 available spare fire engines to put them on, and some of those would have had to have been kept available to replace engines that broke down during the day. - why didn't the fire department staff the spare engines and put them in the Palisades? Well then you have your mobile reserve force is all located on the far edge of the city - what if the Eaton fire had of broken out first? Your mobile reserve force is 30 miles travel distance away in the Palisades - and by the time they get to the Eaton area the fire has grown so large that 7 more engines isn't going to make a difference. As I said - the reality is that under those conditions - very dry brush, incredibly strong winds coupled with very low humidity - there is very little effective firefighting that can be done until the wind eases. Extra firefighters on the 8th of June are a lot more useful - you can swap the crews on the engines part way through the day to rest firefighters as that "day after" is always going to be very hectic - just work on getting the people out of the way of the fire. Did the fire chiefs and the fire department do everything right? Well there has been an enormous amount of criticism of the fire chiefs - but given the (lack of) resources (due to lack of budget) that the fire chiefs had available to them then they made just about all the right decisions, and what they maybe might do differently in hindsight on the 7th probably wouldn't have made much if any difference to the outcome - that fire under those conditions was simply unstoppable. So frankly I think that everyone should stop blaming the fire chiefs and the fire department - and instead look at the positives - because on the 7th of February 2009 south eastern Australia had a really bad fire weather day, and 19,000 firefighters couldn't prevent 173 deaths and 2000 houses being destroyed in the space of just 7 hours - because those fires that day were unstoppable - just like your fires on January 7 - but you have had far less people die in your fires on the 7th of January - everyone in LA. should be taking that as a win in those fire conditions.

Drive around videos are of the tools realtors are using to showcase neighborhoods across the country. Look at current videos from San Antonio, Portland, Denver, etc., and yes, Altadena and Pacific Palisades, and you will see that our towns are criminally unprepared for fire! I don’t blame firefighters or even city officials. Nope, the fault lies with all of us! We love our landscaping and privacy hedges and wooden fences. We love our roses next to our homes and our shade trees and our lawns. And we know that wood decks and wood siding will burn, and that the attic and crawlspace vents on our homes aren’t fire rated. A lot of the things we can do will just take work and not money. We can cover vents with 1/16” stainless steel mesh, or replace the vents with fire rated vents. We can remove wood deer JS and chips and shrubs and grass and make 10’ wide hard scapes around our homes. Yes, we need more firefighters. But we also need fire prevention crews to help homeowners clear brush and create firebreaks and evacuation routes. It’ll take residents and communities and county and state and federal agencies working together. And, we pumped record amounts of carbon into the atmosphere last year, so the climate is getting hotter faster. First, stop burning fossil fuels. Next, residents and communities need to harden homes and businesses and landscapes and firebreaks and evacuation routes. There is a lot we all can do to be better prepared.

As I have been watching the need and response to the LA fires, I have been wondering what would happen if the BIG CA QUAKE would happen. This might be a very great blessing if the government uses it to prep for the major quake that is expected to hit the Los Angeles area at any time. If it happened now, today, what would LA County do? The water issues are a huge issue. How can that problem be figured out now that we have seen how large disasters affect the water supplies. And all the need that happen when people are displaced for a long period of time.

Katie, so disappointed in your coverage. Any city budgets for the normal needs of everyday calls for service. With all due respect, what do you think the union reps are going to say? They have the chance to call for more personnel and equipment yes, but they are responsible for increasing the membership of the union. Extracting as much money from the members is their goal. You mentioned removal of brush - great idea until you have rains and then mud slides. LA City FD has an annual budget of 800 million dollars. I would think that staffing levels on engines and ladders are staffed at reasonable levels. As far as apparatus repair: current apparatus are like cars. They are computerizd, have air bags, and the pumps can even be assisted by computers. New apparatus orders are usually a three year wait. I think a study is needed by an independent organization such as the University of Maryland.

I hear one firefighter say that it's a decade long problem, so you can't point fingers at one person. The mayors and City Council are put there to see what changes need to be made, and correct it. Why was that not done? The extra firefighters that were held back from working because of the b/o fire engines could have made a world of difference. The same things apply to the call to defund police department four years ago--now they have to call in national guard to help protect these burned properties from looters. LA keeps shooting itself in the feet, as the saying goes.

I’m a So Cal Native and probably driven 1000 times up and down PCH. I had no idea there were that many homes in the Palisades. Having hiked up and behind the hills this was an accident waiting to happen. Those canyons and the Santa Ana’s combined with flying ember/tinders into old wooden houses was a lethal combination. Until, people quit poo pooing climate change it’s only going to get worse. Also, read an article that the new EV car batteries take a ton more water to put out.

Why are fire engines and firefighters rescuing heart attacks!? Our ambulance corp rescues and drives to hospital! No firemen or trucks. I live in California

Musk is too invested in destabilising European governments and playing with space projects. Hopefully, the US public will come to understand his true nature, soon.

God bless all the firemen and I think I saw one woman I'm not sure here in Florida, but God bless them all in Jesus Christ's name it's a dangerous job it's a shame in all different states that closing stations just to save money they rather keep money in their pocket then to take care of the firefighters and save people's lives. Give the firefighters all over what they need trucks whatever they need what is the problem I can't comprehend this..❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤😊😊😊😊😊😊🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉 like I told her armed forces man and woman thank you and I say the same thing to the firefighters and everyone else is out there to protect us and save us.....
